i am pondering whether i want to ride a motorcycle.  i like the cruiser style of bike.  the metric bikes (japanese made) are nice.  should i get one with fuel injection or with a carburetor?  should i get one with belt drive or a shaft or chain?  is one with a radiator important rather than an air-cooled bike?  what do you know from experience?

for around $6,000 yamaha sells the FZ6 (4 cylinders, fuel injected, liquid cooled) kawasaki sells the Ninja 650R (2 cyl, fuel injected, liquid cooled) and Suzuki sells the SV650 (2 cyl, fuel injected, liquid cooled). those three are somewhat comparable. BMW makes the F650 (one cyl, fuel injected, air cooled) for around $8,000 and Ducati has a Monster 695 (2 cyl, fuel injected, air cooled) and very stylish! the four cylinder yamaha is most forgiving to an inexperienced rider's mistakes with the throttle--meaning must get the RPMs revving high to get the kick in torque!

Al Kaplan, thanks for opening your blog to comments.

I like the looks of the kawasaki z-1000. I have learned that a radiator is preferable to air cooling.
Here are some other good looking ones:

ducati monster s2r 1000
suzuki sv1000
yamaha FZ1

Good luck with your quest !

a friend told me he bought (not recently, maybe a year or two ago) a one cylinder 650cc Kawasaki KLR for $4700 out-the-door. he mentioned it was some kind of clearance of a discontinued model. the 2008 KLR650 is liquid cooled.
