It's early...but the West Nile Virus is back..at least in parts of the OC.  16 dead birds tested positive..four in one Garden Grove neighborhood.  Experts say they don't know why, but that it's likely we'll see a lot more now and into the summer.  Don't panic though.  Yes, humans have died from West Nile, but that is very rare.  What can you do?  Don't leave any standing water around your home where the disease carrying mosquitoes like to breed.  Also, limit your exposure outside when mosquitoes are prevalent.  If you do head out where mosquitoes are present, wear repellent and long sleeve shirts and pants.  Finally..if you see dead birds around your home, especially crows, call your local vector control office.

We have this in our neck of the woods as well..

It is scary for animals like me too.. the dead birds can be tempting for me ..especially if I am hungry..but I don't touch them..

Al,

Since you mentioned Garden Grove, were the birds near Katella Avenue, Orangewood Avenue, or Chapman Avenue, particularly around Magnolia and Brookhurst Streets?

SANTA ANA - An anonymous phone call led police on Wednesday to the man they believe drove into an 87-year-old woman and then fled, leaving her critically injured.

Police arrested 32-year-old Patricio Gonzalez Guizar of Santa Ana at his workplace in Santa Fe Springs. He was booked on charges of felony hit and run, driving without a license and driving without insurance, Santa Ana police Cpl. Jose Gonzalez said.

Police also recovered a black Ford Bronco with damage to its front end, Gonzalez said. He did not know what kind of work Guizar was doing when he was arrested.

The 87-year-old woman was apparently taking her usual morning walk when she was hit Tuesday morning. Police found her at 15th and Parton streets at 5:20 a.m. after receiving reports of an elderly woman bleeding on the ground.

She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses initially told police that a white Ford Explorer may have hit the woman.

West Nile is a bad one. A friend of mine is recovering from a case of the virus. It nearly killed her because the virus caused meningitis in her brain. The drugs to fight the infection cost $40,000 and her insurance did not cover the entire expense of her care and recovery. She and her husband are now left with a $30,000 medical bill.

The OC's my beat for FOX 11 News. But you can catch me covering just about any story, any place, any time. Have news, will travel! I've been doing that here at Fox 11 for 15 years, traveling coast to coast and south of the border. You never know what you might do or where you might end up and your assignment could change from one minute to the next. To me, that's what being a reporter is all about. And it's pretty cool working in an area where I was born and raised. Yep, I'm a native Angeleno and proud of it!! In case you're wondering, Naipo is Hawaiian, the short version of the 21-letter ancestral name, Naipoikamanaihookaahi....
Good luck on the pronunciation.
