I learned something on Good Day Tampa Bay.  Pam Brown, an Urban Horticulture expert with the Pinellas County Extension Office,  was a guest on our show and had examples of various herbs that can be grown in Florida, even in the summer, including basil, rosemary, thyme, and parsley.   She explained that if you keep the potted herbs in a screened enclosure, little critters may come to live on the plants: and because the plants are in an enclosed area, the "good bugs" that are seeking to eat the pests, may not have a way in !!  So, on occasion, take the plants outside the enclosure!   Also: she explained the difference between spices and herbs:  a spice usually comes from seeds and bark, where herbs come from plants.   They're full of info at the county extension offices!

I wish I had a green thumb! If I tried to grow these, I would unfortunately kill them within a week. Plants are my biggest weakness.

Ann,

I would like you to ask your guest this question. If the bad bugs can get in to get eat the plants, why can't the good bugs get in to eat the bad bugs?
Are the bad bugs breaking and entering while the good bugs, being good, stay outside to call the plant police?

The herb/spice thing I learned in 4th grade.

As I write this bio, I realize just how fast time flies. I've been working at WTVT Channel 13 for almost 20 years. I started on the morning show with Ernie Lee, when it was called "Breakfast Beat." During these years I've worked the medical beat and weekend mornings. I come from the Midwest. I was born and raised in Decatur, Illinois, once the soybean capitol of the world! College took me to the big city of Chicago. I "played in Peoria" at a TV station there before settling in Tampa. It's been a great adventure, and I can't wait for the NEXT 20!!!!!
