 WHO ARE THE NICOLAITANES?

from

The Revelation of the Apocalypse

Given by Christ Jesus to John the Apostle
on the Island of Patmos.

Chapter 2
vv. 6 ”Yet this you do have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate.”
vv. 15 “So you also have some who in the same way hold the teaching of the Nicolaitanes.”

The Nicolaitanes were a cultish faction, holding to a Christian heresy whose adherents are called nicolaitans, nicolaites, or nicolaitanes. They were apparently much like the Pharisees. The name is a compound Greek term, the Greek word "nicao" means "to conquer," to dominate, intimidate, manipulate. It means undue control. The word "laos" means "the people" …the laity.

In case you don't know, when the church began in Jerusalem, on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus from the tomb, believers met in their houses, shared meals, and studied the Torah and the Prophets to find for themselves the references to Y'shua haMessiach, and confirm for themselves that they truly were seeing Prophecy fulfilled. Of note were those residents of Berea, who "eagerly examined the scriptures every day to see whether these things were so", and many of them believed.

There were no official Priests, Bishops, Cardinals, or Popes. When the followers of Jesus met, anyone at all was welcome to share points they had found in study, and to speak out what the Holy Spirit might give them to say.

Now, the Clergy leads the conquered Parishioners in a procession, having made themselves lords over the Heritage of Jehovah God and His Christ. They limit what they teach of the Words of God. Worse, they expel (excommunicate) whom they will from their congregations, even for making study of Scripture apart from their interpretation. And so, “For lack of knowledge, my people perish.”

Ditto, Arky! The first churches were a gathering of people coming together to receive the teachings of Jesus and to practice such teachings. It was good for groups of people to come together to discuss what they have learned and to learn from each other. In this way, all were there on equal standing. Not so in today's churches where a pastor stands above the congregation on a platform and dictates his will to others--not to mention reaches deeply into everyone's pocket!

God is a REWARDER of those who are really looking for Him.
But, for those who are looking for a genie in a bottle, He ain't gonna show, cause that's not who He is.
Read the Bible, Old Testament AND New Testament, and He will touch you from time to time to let you know your faith is rewarded.

Just in case you didn't know, Torah and the Prophets is Hebrew for Bible, and Y'shua haMessiach is Hebrew for Jesus the Christ.

Who were worse, in Biblical times do you think, Arky, The Pharisees, or the Sadducees?

Without quesion, the answer would be the Sadducees. You remember they did not believe in angels, nor did they believe in any afterlife. The were the religious humanists of their day.

Today, however, we have great numbers of people actually preaching in churches who do not believe the Bible to be Truth, or toss out some certain passages as be being passe. They are no better.

They take the Lord's Name in vain, and they will not be held guiltless.

Hmmm. I was thinking something along those lines, for those reasons. But, weren't the Pharisees a lot meaner to people?

Pharisees were a lot more Legalistic.   I guess that would make them about as mean as any lawyer.  But, they did not deny the general resurrection and final Judgment.

You might remember, Jesus said, "The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses   . . ."
(Matthew 23:2)

But, Jesus had earlier stated the caviat   . . . "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven."
(Matthew 5:20)

"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.  Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation."
(Matthew 23:13-14)
