To be honest, I will never fully understand the need for preferential treatment on the basis of gender or race in public employment and education. Could it be, my generation didn't see segregated schools, white only water fountains, slavery, or any of the other atrocities of previous generations. (and my generation is tagged as bad) Is it because I am young and believe we all have the ability to shape our own lives? Perhaps young and dumb? Overly optimistic? Whatever the reason maybe, I find it a slap in my face as a woman to be accepted to a school or employment opportunity simply for my DNA. Why should anyone be given something they do not deserve?  Like buisnesses owned by a woman or  minority get primary consideration for federal and state contracts. Are they best for the job? Guess it doesn't matter as long they have the right genetic make-up.

How long does this country have to pay back women and minorities? Obama has made clear that this nation needs some form of affirmative action to address the legacy of discrimination in America. Key word LEGACY. So when does the white male, the only one not helped by affirmative action become the minority? Will it be my generations LEGACY to oppress the white male until they march to the white house and demand rights? I mean they deserve to be oppressed. Their grandpa's grandpa's grandpa's oppressed me. So we should punish the future. How noble.

For the people who think it is only minorities that are poor, come on!!! Not a whole lot of white people live in the hood, nope they live in trailor parks. White children's daddys and mommys leave, white children go to bad schools, white children go hungry, white children are abused. Its not a race thing its a human thing!!! Its time for the race gender card to be put away. Its not 100 years ago nor is it 50 years ago nor is it even 10 years ago...  Its today. Thank those who paved the way but make your life your own. Work for what you want and if you want something bad enough there is nothing in the world that can stop you. (unless you are a white male)

Well why don't we vote for more rights taken from us and turn more over to the government. That seems to work well.

Gimini- I am saying that affirmative action has no place in society today. It is a crutch and an undeserving one at that. I am all about regaining our rights. I question rather we have control over the rights we have lost and further more how do we regain them? Everyone votes the same morans in year after year... is it ignorance? How can we the people take our rights back and snd a message to Washington we are sick of the BLEEP? Maybe I misunderstood what you are saying.

There are efforts already underway trying to do away with it. With the other laws that are on the books, it is really not necessary to have it.

Preach it sister!!!

I attended my first affirmative action 'class' from my employer in the early '70s. Ironically the only reason I remember the class is that a black lady stood up at the end of the class and made the statement that white males were now the minority. She didn't say this pridefully, but with remorse.

I never could stand affirmative action either.. I never could understand why my generation had to give preferential treatment to someone because of slavery that wasnt even legal in my great-great grandmothers time.

and noone getting the preferential treatment was ever a slave either.

Anyone who knows history, particularly the history of Europe, will, I think, recognize that the domination of education or of government by any one particular religious faith is never a happy arrangement for the people. Eleanor Roosevelt Anyone who thinks must think of the next war as they would of suicide. Eleanor Roosevelt In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility. Eleanor Roosevelt
