Kiss my assets!

At the beginning of hurricane season, whenever we visit the grocery store, we pick up a few canned goods each time we go, so by the time July gets here, the pantry is stocked with canned meats, fruits and veggies, powdered milk and several small propane tanks for the camp stove and the propane burner. You won't catch me going to the store with the rest of the crazy people when a storm decides to bear down on us!

We also keep the Propane tank for the BBQ filled at this time of year.

I have on hand 15 gallons of bottled water and a case of bottled water besides.

I also have a drawer full of batteries, D's,9v, AAA and AA's I have a hand held radio shack weather radio, several candles, oil lamps and flashlights, yes we are prepared.

The only thing left on my list this year, is to get the generator out and run it for a bit, to make sure it starts!
:?

I live on the east coast, so we have always planned for a hurricane to come calling, especially after seeing what Andrew did to south Florida (Homestead) in 1992.

In 2004 after Hurricane Frances, I had to go help my friend, they had nothing, no canned goods, nothing to cook on and nothing to eat because their power was out, they also had no generator, water, oil lamps or candles! Three adults were in that house and two children, that situation could have been avoided with proper planning.
  I took her to the WalMart once it opened and made sure she had plenty to feed her family. She kept going for the perishables and I explained to her that without refridgeration and without a cooler with ice, she would have to cook it all right away. Some people have no common sense! We were without power here for 9 days after Frances and another 9 days after Jeanne. I think my friend learned a valuable lesson that year.

A lack of planning on your part, does not constitute and emergency on my part! But... I can be convinced to help out those in need!
:D

So tell me... Are you prepared?
And if not when do you plan to do so?
Inquiring minds want to know!
:P
As always thanks for reading and thanks for the blog!

Well, for the first few days without power, I will be cooking everything that is in the freezer on the barby.

After that, I will dig into the canned goods, if necessary.
I can flush the toilet with water from the river, which is right across the street.

I would also fill up every available container with fresh water before the storm came, including the bathtub.
Batteries? What size you want? I got 'em.

What would suck the most is I would not be able to blog until the power came back on!

LMAO!!!

Hurricanes don't bother me. After living 4000 feet up in the mountains during winter we learned how to survive without power and water for weeks on end but here is a short list of what we keep on hand during hurricane season.

25 gallons of fresh water
5 doz candles of assorted sizes
10 boxes of water proof matches
3 air mattresses, blankets, and pillows
canned good assortment
assorted non perishable items
3 camping cooking tool sets
Charcoal
first aid kit fully stocked including iodine
2 large tarps
bungee cords assorted sizes
weather radio
5 doz batteries assorted sizes
2 rolls of heavy dudy tin foil
5 empty coffee cans (for cooking)
A can opener (old fashioned kind)
A hand tool kit with nails, hammer, multi tip screwdriver and hand saw.
2 changes of clothing
5 flashlights, 2 battery operated lanterns
A pet kit with food, travel bowls, leashes and collars
All important documents in a water proof bag
and $500.00 in cash.

We keep 3 military (medal) foot lockers weighted down with 200lb weights in the bottom to store this. One is for food and food products used for cooking, one is for bedding and clothing and documents, and the last is for tools and tarps.

Even if the house blow away we are set to survive until help comes. For those that might wonder about the coffee cans for cooking, that is an old girlscout trick. punch holes around the bottom of the can, place candles inside cover with a sheet made from triple thick tin foil and you have a cooking surface that will work great. The more candles the hotter the surface.

Like I said blizz

Girl, you ARE ready, aren't you? We are "stocked and locked." We can't and won't leave, we have too many animals to evacuate. We
have previously relocated our horses to higher ground, and would do that if necessary. Our generator is wired to go into our circuit breaker. I thought I was going to lose my mind, tripping over extension cords during Charlie & Francis. I'm mostly concerned about our remaining 150-200 Water Oaks. They have suffered irreparable damage, not only from the hurricanes, but from the drought. Many of them are dead or dying. We've had a number of them trimmed or removed, but it seems like another one dies everyday. I shudder to think what will happen to them in a 75-100 mph steadily blowing wind!

I always think I'm ready but until the time comes. I hope I got it together this year. There are things that I need to wait until the last minute to get. Gas for the generator and cars. I can't stand the smell of gas in the generatorcans, it over whelms the house, so thats a definite last minute thing.

Brenda, I do what you do. Each time I go to the store, I get a little more. We already have plenty of batteries and water. I went thru Andrew. It sucked. ;P
