Times are tough. There's little doubt this is the worst I've seen the economy (and pretty much everything else) since I became a working adult. Like you, I've tried to find some areas to cut back or conserve. But apparently the politicians who run Orlando don't see it that way.

The Mayor and the City Commissioners are discussing increasing property taxes 21%! That would essentially wipe any and all savings from the doubling of the homestead exemption. As one city politican put it - people in Orlando have become accustomed to top-notch services and they want to keep it that way.

I don't know...I bet a lot of you who live in Orlando would rather see the elected officials earn a little more of their salary and find ways to save at least some, if not all, of the $30 million dollars the city is short on. Afterall isn't that what you're trying to do at home?

I agree whole heartly....dont see it happening though, no one wants to take a paycut, and it seems our officials dont want to "earn" their money either, much easier to reach into the taxpayers pocket.
Maybe we should STOP letting LAWYERS run our government......hmmm what a concept.

Time to recall any Mayor or Commissioner who want to raise our TAX's, we could save alot by firing some of them, they are over paid and not worth having in office. They don't care about the Tax payer, just themselves...

There are cutbacks everywhere... especially the schools. That's what I don't understand. The schools down here are bad enough, why make them worse? I've never seen anything like it. We're expecting our first child and I can't imagine what the schools will be like in 5 or 6 years. People need to get their priorities straight!

Why cant we make a new law reducing all of these politicians salaries?
We could save Billions doing this.

Why not cut the City's budget the old fashioned way - lay off another 250 city staff like you did back in 2003. You did ME a favor. Dyer should have been gone a long time ago!

If they cut back, how will they afford the gas for their limos'. Do you really expect them to buy groceries and actually cook meals at home?

Baby...we've all been asking that same question now for a while! It would seem that the people are doing more then our own city, county, and state officials! That should tell a lot within itself and should also tell people just how things are being ran! Their cut backs don't co-inside with the cuts we would put inter consideration. And people wonder why we are in all this struggling downfalls.....go figure!

When more of our needs are being cut back over more of what they feel is needed....HELLO, RED FLAG...should go up in the minds of citizens! Imagine that!

It's all hogwash. They cut property taxes cause they were too high and the average savings per house was said to be about $200. Then they tell us they have deficit of what, 80 billion dollars because of that? So they lay off all these teachers? I remember we did the math and that came out to there being 400 million homes in Florida.

they say there is a shortfall and they are talking about building a baseball stadium. They should take a pay cut before raising fees and taxes

One of the things I said in my original post: the Mayor says Orlando citizens have become accustomed to the fine services by the city and they need to uphold it. My question is: wouldn't people choose paring back some city services versus paying more in property taxes to maintain current services?

Cut back? I think the city is taking a different approach with its expenses - doubling down!

http://www.cityoforlando.net/admin/omb/budgets.html

Parking Systems Expenses
2006-2007: 7.9 million
2007-2008: 15.7 million

Building Codes Expenses
2006-2007: 5 million
2007-2008: 10.2 million

Orlando Venues Expenses
2006-2007: 10.6 million
2007-2008: 17.5 million

Solid Waste Expenses
2006-2007: 14.3 million
2007-2008: 23.4 million

Stormwater Expenses
2006-2007: 10.2 million
2007-2008: 36.5 million

Wastewater Expenses
2006-2007: 31.2 million
2007-2008: 50.4 million

It would make for a good news story - compare the past 2 or 3 years of budgets - calculate the increases - have the city explain/justify the increases - show where the city has improved - show where it needs improvement - compare to other cities in the region with similar populations...

Are you enjoying Amendment One yet?? The administraion's salaries won't be cut, give up that tired, lame line. If you want services, your going to pay, bottom line. Funny how human nature works, "cut my taxes, but, ohhhhh nooooo, don't take anything away from me". Can't have it both ways. And all this because the ignorant voters couldn't think past their pathetic wallets and consider the consequences that would surely follow. Hopefully, those who voted for Amendment One will be hit the hardest. Then maybe, just maybe, they won't sell their souls yet again for some BS tax "break" rhetoric. Pitiful individuals...

Where do they get off calling what they provide “excellent service” ? In the past 15 years they have cut everything back to the point where I am all for a coil operated police service and NO tax ! Fact is the City would be raising our taxes even if the state had not cut our taxes...we cut back on our gas consumption and the “pig” is losing money on gas tax so they city will find a way to make us pay that “lose” ...far be it for the city/county to ever think about cutting some of its pet projects* to not lean on us for more money .
*Lousy arena , that train we voted against ! , etc.

I'm suddenly reminded of those stupid scooters that the city bought so their people could ride around handing out information. What a massive waste of money!

First off NOBSHERE, just look at the figures listed in the post above you. The problem is not the property tax cuts, the problem is the city spending these inflated prices. Tell me why almost everything double in cost? More bs from the city. They inflated those figures to cry wolf and get more money out of us again. The city can operate just fine with the tax cuts using the figures from the year before. Someone should investigate these figures and do an audit on the city.

I think they got too drunk on all that cash in the boom time of a couple years ago and now can't see cutting back to match the times and the revenue. Local governments only see budgets and revenue going up every year, so in the good times they spend spend and get accustomed to it.

one more thing: you can't say this has much to do with school funding. Amendment One didn't touch school taxes. and BTW, the savings from the double homestead exemptions hasn't even kicked in yet.
