As Martin Luther King Jr. day comes to an end I am moved by a few things today.

1. In our news tonight... not one drive-by shooting... not one gang murder.

2. In our news tonight... a fiery debate for President of the United States involving a woman candidate and a black candidate.

----------------------

Last week, I was blessed to emcee an MLK celebration at the House of Blues. The HOB Foundation selected three student winners in a "spoken word" competition. One little girl (African-American) arrived with her beaming mother. A Latina teen spoke of how she heard about the competition on her school intercom and seized on the opportunity for scholarship money. And the winner, a dynamic African-American senior. He's already planning to go to law school.

I was his age when Ronald Reagan created the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.  (1983)  I recall the fierce battle in my home state of Arizona when the Governor fought the creation of this holiday.  It wasn't until the year 2000 that MLK day was observed in all states.

These kids were proof to me that Dr. King's dream is alive.

MLK would be sick if he saw the conditions of life in the inner city that resembles Pakistan. Or he would be haunted by the fact that Black youths cant read, get pregnant at 14, and carry guns instead of books. Since MLK didnt plan on more blacks being in Prison than college... one day of peace is nuts.

MLK dream is dead from the neck up. Ask Bill Cosby. And I aim to do something about it.

Truth guy's absolutely right. On top of that blacks will blame whites for the next 2000 years for the conditions they continue to inflict upon themselves and by that time they'll have been driven into the sea by 170 million illegal aliens led by General Tony Valdez (who's dreams of reconquista are supported by Christine Devine).

Poor MLK must be rolling over in his grave.

Christine,

I can also recall that time when Reagan declared the MLK holiday. I also remember Arizona fighting the holiday, and I believe that California did the same thing. I was in college at the time, so my class schedule didn't get affected. One thing I am hoping for is this: I hope the youth of today are learning to get along with each other regardless of what their background is. It is sickening to read, see or hear about shootings going on. I'm glad that you said something about this. You and I are both optimists: we both see potential even though the odds appear to be grim with the things we see going on in society. I remember how humble and down to earth you were when I met you and briefly chatted with you at the Billy Graham Crusade; keep up the good fight Christine, and encourage others with your optimism! We all need people like you to be a great example to others.

just because you didn't report the drive bys or anything about gang members dose not mean nothing didn't happen..FOX just didn't report it..I'm sure if you looked at the police reports for 1/21/08 you will find plenty of them..yesterday wasn't a day of peace just a day off for some...its been 40 years since the death of Dr King and the only place you ll find racial equality is in prison

Christine, isn't it amazing how far we've come as a Nation? I hope Martin Luther King's proud to see Hillary and Barrack running for President. It's encouraging.

Hello Christine,
I really do appreciate Dr.Martin Luther King,Jr
I actually met him when He came to my home State Mississippi. He came after James Merieth was shot in Desoto county.Dr.King and others in the march from Hernando,to Jackson,Mississippi which is over 260 miles.King came to continue the march since James could not due to his injury. The group would stop at various points to rest and the country folks would give them refreshments. My father and I met Dr.King at one of the church members home.I personally witnessed many of the civil rights leaders and planning meetings as my father and uncle were involved during those times. Some only talk about this but I witnessed first hand. Thanks for this BLOG Miss Divine. Some people here have no sense of compassion and they will make everything an argument. My life has been so blessed with oportunities in my favor that I feel like WOW!If I died tomorrow I have had such a wonderful life.Im not in a rat's race for anything.I do a lot of travelling and people come to here me speak. Christine I know that I am right about a lot of things I say so now I am expressing my God given wisdom. America has much more to go but We have come along way. A lot of successful people will tell you that they owe a lot of their success to the dream put forward. Oprah Winfrey will tell you that too.
Christine I remain your number 01 FAN!!!

To highlight the problems in America/inner city life is nothing new to me. Remember, I work in the news business. I see it EVERY DAY. I do community work every week. I agree that we have A LOT of work to do to on the issues of kids and guns, the high school drop out rate, the prison population and illegal immigration. All valid issues!!

I will, however, never think that Martin Luther King's dream is DEAD when I see a woman presidential candidate AND an African-American. Or when I see students doing THE WORK to win scholarships... keeping their grades up to get into college. I wanted this blog to be short and focused on one point... hope. As I ended my day I left filled with hope based on the observations noted in my original blog.

Fox didn't AVOID covering violence because it was MLK day. We all know there was crime somewhere yesterday, but overall, in LA news it was a mellow day. Today, however, there was a bank robbery with suspects still on the loose, a freeway shooting and a border issue. So, is there work still to be done, yes.

Today I worked with a woman who's bringing "support dogs" into schools in a unique reading program to generate some kind of interest in kids who have no interest. I worked with an art teacher giving kids an outlet after school.
Martin Luther King Junior would have been proud of these people!

cristine, what does it mean "Martin Luther King's dream is or is not dead"? How does a woman or a black running for president validate that dream being not dead? college is fine for those americans with the yearning regardless of the color of their skin. please develop a succinct message. think.

LOL...wow, what is wrong with the FOX blogs? They're full of people commenting nothing but bull BLEEP. I think I'd rather watch you on t.v. Christine, because the people commenting on the blogs are stupid, paranoid and depressing. Watching the news on t.v. will be refreshing, honest, intelligent, and uplifting compared to reading these comments. I’m telling you, it’s an epidemic.

Selma... thank you for writing. The topic of MLK's dream being dead vs. alive was raised by Truthsguyla in his response to my blog.

You don't think having a woman and black run for President are evidence of MLK's dream being alive?

You don't have to like the policies or politics of Obama and Clinton, but keep in mind there was a time in our recent history where African-Americans and women couldn't even vote. Meaning you... I'm assuming by your name that you are a woman.

Media... I guess I'm like you too. EMPHASIZING the good. Have a blessed day. You too Mystere and Dasvics.

Abe, my apologies, but I don't understand your point. Would you be so kind as to further explain? It seems to me you overlook my point of focusing on the positive for just a minute. Am I right? Since it is embarrassing to you, I invite you to add your perspective on MLK day. Again, I am not sure which shootings you are referring to. Please help me to understand your point on propaganda.

Paul_D. I did have something to say. What I said was.. I walked away on MLK day thinking very positive thoughts with hope for the future and joy in meeting people with the strength to do the work and tackle some of this country's problems. Not just Obama and Clinton, but Romney, McCain and all the candidates willing to put themselves on the line and tackle issues like illegal immigration, the economy, foreign policy. And the teachers at the House of Blues Foundation. The students, the parent in attendance. Some days in news I walk away very sad or depressed at the state of things. So, for me

I do believe MLK's dream is very much alive. For those who think other wise go back and listen/read his famous speech. Or any of his speeches. Today any race can live freely amoung eachother, everyone has a chance to be anything they want to.I do believe this was MLK's dream we are living it today.
We can not force others to conform within our society but we can enforce the laws by which we live by. We are creatures of free will and that no one can change. In our society today everyone has a right to vote, marry whom they choose, and speak freely.
Where you can sit there and hatefully discuss others and your reasons for hating others but it is due to those very brave souls that you do so.

Thanks Christine, hope you’re having a nice day to. And could you please continue to write more of these intelligent uplifting blogs that emphasize the positive and are based on reality? It's so nice reading your blog, and those of the other reporters at FOX, compared to the utter nonsense that is constantly posted up front by "bloggers".
Can I ask a question? Where are all the smart "bloggers" at? Humm...They must've been hired by either FOX or Microsoft and they're too busy to post at the moment. That's OK, I'll just stick to reading yours until someone other than a FOX reporter, or employee, (ddains are very good as well) posts something honest and interesting that actually makes sense and is founded on reality.
You know, I didn't really watch FOX NEWS because I wasn't familiar with any of the reporters here, but now that I know a little bit about you, I love the reporters at FOX! I do like cnn’s style of programming a little bit more, not to mention the fact that I’m in love with Anderson Cooper, but I’ve started watching FOX NEWS as well now. I've always watched FOX, but not the news. Let’s be honest, FOX’s shows and sitcoms are among the best in television. The Simpsons, American Idol, That 70’s Show, etc...anyways, you’ve made a believer out of me Christine, and you’ve made yet another fan :-)

christine, my comment on the quality of your blog was that i remember reading a blog similar to yours last year-- a mention of relative lack of violent crime on MLK day. my knowledge MLK's dream is his one phrase about "not by the color of one's skin..." so I don't connect to whether our holiday is crime free or not. i do not know anyone who commits crimes. criminals are not welcome in my world. barack's popularity makes me happy, and significantly because of his ethnicity. so my view is not without judgment based on the color of skin. my confidence in barack's intelligence and his character are solely recognition of his essence without regard to his skin. i am not thinking of women's acheivements as a part of MLK's principles but let's not pretend that Hillary is an arm's length candidate. Bill Clinton adds a unique element of what Hillary brings to the white house. As for the kids competition, you've emphasized racial characteristics. great, the kids are angels!

Over the weekend the big local news story was about a party in Compton. Described as a "flyer" party, shots were fired and eight were wounded. Cops rounded up 80 witnesses and transported them by bus to the station for interrogation. A second party was posted on myspace. Some bad guy showed up with his gun and discharged lead. I think a cop was in the vicinity and heard the gun fire. These two parties with heat aren't acceptable in the US of my choice. If you want to craft a blog of nonsense which misrepresents the peaceful world of FOX11's broadcast reach then I want to stress the trust i have in your accurate paragraphs! i still love you!

Thank you for your thoughts.

To clarify, my first blog was in February, 2007... after MLK day. No previous MLK blogs.
Paul_D... you are fortunate to not know anyone who commits crimes. I haven't been so lucky.

Abe... your weekend example is certainly proof of the work that still needs to be done. I still say I'm glad for any day where a horrific crime is not the lead story.

Dasvics... seen your comments on a few other blogs. Just assumed you were a regular Fox 11 viewer.

Teshione, haven't seen you blog to me before. Thank you.

I'll be focusing now on my next blog... its about a mentorship program someone had called me about for information.

Christine,
I think your mentoring program is a great way in influencing troubled and at risk youth to do good.If our children have an adult inspiring them to pursue their goals and dreams this could help prevent them from the bad influences that surround them. This would be great if we can push this type of program into our schools . If we could create a positive mentoring program focused on the younger children they have a better chance succeeding in school and not so easily influenced by other negative constants. Children who have learning disabilities and single parent homes are more likely to get in trouble and fail due to the lack of supervision at home and the struggles the face with education. I am told over and over that the district just does not have the funding for the needed aids, tutors and programs.
The LAUSD spent about 4.5 million dollars on their personal expenses with school issued credit cards meant for office supplies. There was a CBS investigation last year that uncovered this outrageous spending with no audits being made these school officials abused their position by wasting millions on themselves instead of the much needed diversion programs our children need.Pushing this type of program into the lime-lite could help with reforming our educational system. Many families in L.A. county can not afford child care let alone tutors for their struggling child. If there were state funded programs within the school districts that cater to these needs, I believe that the failing rate of students would be much less. All these children need is someone who

Good afternoon Christine,

I'm assuming that you're referring to my comments on the Mayday Melee? If so, please allow to explain.

I initially viewed the story on cnn. By chance I had recently posted my opinion, a few weeks earlier here on the FOX blogs, regarding the situation of Anna Nicole and her baby after her death. Then the protests and the fiasco in May occurred. I was curious about it, and had strong feelings about the issue, so I began "blogging". Sometimes I wish I hadn't, because I came across a real nutcase-nutcases?? who knows, but I digress.
I've grown up mostly among people from and in the Hispanic community, so I'd been exposed to plenty of racist remarks, made by Hispanic's, but not by White people. I had no clue, no idea, what it was Hispanics where protesting or so upset about. From my perspective back then, it appeared to me that those in the Hispanic community where the only ones behaving in a racist and disrespectful manner, so I commented accordingly.
Now it's been several months since I first began blogging, I've commented plenty, and I’ve read many different views and opinions on the issue, that I wasn't even aware of or realized existed. I had no idea. So...now my tune’s changed, along with my feelings and views on the matter, as a direct result of "blogging. I get it, I understand the gravity of the situation and I hope that by changing my form of expression, I no longer insult people I didn't even understand at one time. I'm trying to find the middle ground on this issue Christine. I'm trying to figure it out and whatever feelings I
