Two men have filed a lawsuit in federal court in Hawaii over what they perceive to be a doomsday machine.

They believe a giant particle accelerator will produce a black hole that will grow to swallow the earth.

Walter L. Wagner and Luis Sancho say that  the European Center for Nuclear Research have trivialized the chances that the collider could produce a small black hole that could eventually consume the earth.

The Large Hardon Collider, (no kidding, that is what it is called!) will fire up protons to energies of 7 trillion electron volts before banging them together.

This is boggling to the mind.

While it is no real biggy in the atmosphere, as it happens thousands of times there, this is different.. It is being done in a laboratory environment far below the atmosphere.

Who gets to say yes or no to take this risk? Scientists?

Do you think this experiment should be allowed to proceed?

Do you think they should stop it, before it is too late?

What if they are wrong?

The Black hole is being created in Brookhaven National Lab in Upton, NY.

The Hardon Collider is working on recreating the Big Bang at the beginning of creation.
That could actually be dangerous to Creationists if they can prove their theory.

It's no more dangerous than using nuclear weapons against another country.

Actually it is called the Large Hadron Collider. LOL @ you both.

A black hole would require a lot of mass. It doesn't seem likely.

Scary stuff.

Yes, the hole will be small to start with, but the theory is that it could rapidly expand as it starts to consume matter.
When they are shooting through the atmosphere, they are harmless, but anything created in the collider could actually be quite different.

According to a paper by Stephen Hawking in 1974, they would rapidly evaporate in a poof of radiation and elementary particles and so pose no threat.

But no one has ever seen a black hole evaporate. This means a black hole could actually be stable, and a micro black hole created by the collider could grow, and eventually swallow the earth.

Because of the gamble of quantum physics itself, there is quite the possibility of anything happening!

Will it prove the big bang? I say no.
Could it destroy this planet? I dunno. But I think the possibility is there!
Should they do this? NO! But they will anyway, as the massive amount of money tied up in this project will over-rule any lawsuit.

It will proceed!

Scary stuff indeed Gammies!

Crone, you are right. Apparently there is a typo in the article in the paper here I took this from! Thier proof readers suck, and I see mis-prints all the time. Having never heard of this machine before, I took the typo as the actual name. Not my fault.
It is actually called the Large Hadron Collider. I think. Or is that the typo? LOL!

The Hardon/Hadron Collider is being built in a cavern beneath Cessy, France zbert. Or at least part of it.

I have not heard of black holes being created in Upton NY.

LOL I googled Large Hardon Collider and came up with the Large Hadron Collider Homepage - and several enties for the initial spelling which are TOTALLY unrelated.

Thanks for the blog. I have been ensconced in searching for info about the collider and black holes. Extrememly interesting and scary stuff. I know that if the Human brain can conceive it, eventually people will achieve it. Makes me wonder if anyone will ever say, "Enough!"

Or say: Well, we can do it, but maybe we should not?

Or say: Maybe we will open a can of worms that we can't put back in the can after opening it, so let's at least re-think it?

Absolutely! I understand people wanting to show their new discoveries or inventions are valid, but in a lot of things I feel like the paperwork is all we need as a reality.

For all we learn, there is so much more for which we have no scope of comprehension. Trial and error is an excellent learning tool, but I'd just as soon some of this stuff remain a thesis.

Yes indeed, and this is one of the things I would like to see remain just a theory. There is no beneficial end result of this experiment, and it is simply just opening that can to see what is in it!
Will it evaporate? Or will it grow? I am afraid of the answer!

Can man build a machine that could destroy mankind, the earth, and possibly the universe itself?

I think they are building it right now, and the questions will be answered whether you like the results or not.

What gives them the right to roll these dice?

Without regard for the rest of the inhabitants of this planet, and indeed the universe?

It is so bizarre, and reckless, I cannot believe everyone will just sit back and wait to see if they are wrong or not.

I can. People are funny that way. Don't worry. Ther will be no black hole and Hawkings is a hack.

String theory is crap too.

Would we see it, hear it or feel it happen or about to happen? If it will only take a nano second then I guess we wouldn't have a response time. I wouldn't want to be the last one hanging on. But it might take us to a better place. Like OZ or something. I would rather something like this happen than watching people walk around who are half human/half bovine.

Well, I certainly hope you are right old friend, but let's face it, a black hole escaping the confines of a lab, and swallowing it in the process, will make the killer bees seem as a playtoy.

Funny how scientists can do whatever they wish, and do not have to answer to anyone if it goes horribly wrong.

Randy, another good question. How long will it take to grow, if it does indeed grow?
Will it be a nano second, where the earth is consumed before we even know what is happening?
Or will it be slow but steady, where the whole world knows what is happening, but cannot stop it?

Hopefully the black hole will swallow it's creators... Problem solved when there are no more Scientists to create more black holes ya think?

On the lighter side... I think my husband used to date a black hole, but that is another blog! LMAOROTF!

Yes, the creators will be the first to cease to exist Brenda. Only fitting.

Norty says no black hole will happen.

Randy wonders how fast it will grow.

There is a perfect illustration of how people feel on both sides of this.

As for me, it is obvious I would like this stopped. But I know it will happen anyway.

No one in the world is even following this, except the two men that filed a lawsuit.

They will lose, and they probably know this themselves. At least they have brought some attention to the matter.

Which could be the end of matter.
