The best solution is education. The legislature is in a special session looking to make deep budget cuts. Once again the head of education is on the block. It shouldn't be. It should never be. We should be insisting on more money, much more money for education. Teaching and inspiring children will pay huge dividends in the short and long term. We should be throwing money at our educational institutions and our teachers.

The fourty million Hillsborough county was planning to spend on a baseball and soccer complex should be spent where it would do the most good. Educating students and paying teachers higher salaries.

Is it education or knowledge that's the most important? Education is a cold factory-like conveyer belt, in one door out the other. Plus, public education has had a big part in destroying what use to fun in America, like Christmas. Many are liberals that teach and tend to be unbalanced in their presentation.
Their Unions always support the Democrat. It isn't more money but a return to fair and balanced teaching. A return to respecting the religious as a vital part of the child's development. A return to respecting this country. The public schools have walked all over the trust of parents who as a whole are religious and patriotic, instead they love their socialistic agenda. Is it any wonder that the kids now days have no respect or value honor. More money to an anti-American, anti-religious, anti-conservative, cold institution like the public school is a big BOO BOO! Its knowledge with understanding and applied as wisdom that is the greater goal.

There is little quality education to be had in this country unless you can pay for it. Government schools pay their teachers insulting salaries and get what they pay for; teachers in name only. What fools we Americans be.

Education begins at home. It is unfortunate that most children don't begin their education until they have reached grade school age. It is the duty and responsibility of parents to start their children out on the right foot long before they reach school age. Start them early by teaching them how to behave in public and how to behave with other children before they are faced with it at age 5. Parents have to be there for their children for the right reasons and not just for the fun things.
Education and knowledge are important for children. They are our future and it is our task to motivate them towards learning when they are young by teaching them and setting the right examples.

"This emphasis on money is a tragic farce, in view of all the research that shows virtually no correlation between spending per pupil and educational outcomes. Districts with some of the highest per pupil expenditures have some of the lowest test results, and vice versa. Countries that spend less than half as much per pupil outperform American students on international tests, year after year."...Thomas Sowell

Get rid of teachers that do not perform, even if they are tenured (to heck with the NEA)
Get rid of No Child Left Behind...and put the State in sole charge of their own schools without the pressure of the Federal Government.

Make vouchers a "way of life" for all families, everywhere.

WE spend enough on schools, students and education..take the money allocated and make it work.

Denise_White I think this is a great post, I feel stupid because I just wrote a post titled "Why are police and teachers so underpaid?" I guess, I should check all the blogs first.
I agree they are underpaid, they are responsible for our most valuable resource, our children.

I have friends who are teachers who at times have to spend their own money to buy supplies for their classroom & for children who are not provided for. This bothers me.
I've been told that Asian children who come over here & go to school outperform the American kids by far. This bothers me.
Is this just the way things are in Florida or I wonder if it's this way all over the U.S??

winkie I have to agree with the statement or at least I believe it is possible. I don't know if it is only Asian Children necessarily are outperforming American children, there could be other country's as well. I think it is not my place to judge anyone; however, it seems as our American society is afraid of discipline towards our children. As far as the Asian culture, and many other cultures they have more disciplined at younger ages.
Back to the question, I feel that teachers are underpaid, and I only have respect for themm.

Throwing money at a failed system is "throwing good money after bad money." The N.E.A. is not the solution but at the core of the problam. The trouble is at the top (N.E.A.) not the bottom of the payrolls (teachers). Public school Administration has become a guild unto itself with little or no classroom experience handling students.

The disparity between admistrator's and teacher's salaries is astonishing. To imagine that 160 hours of college credit courses in "Education" ahould qualify a person for the position of Assistant Principal or Counselor with nearly no experience in the classroom is absurd. Money is the least of the needs of this flawed system.

Nothing short of total reorganiztion can reclaim the former successes of our public schools. Asian students? They acheive more because their parents demand it of them.

Winkie, the schools should be provided with supplies through taxes. It is pointless to put this pressure onto teachers who have enough of a task in the classroom rather than extending their abilites to buying supplies. This is shameless.
It is a shame that society has come to the point where there have to be grief counselors, police and other security measures in place. The funds used for these non-educational necessities takes away from the funds needed to provide the scholars with the education they require.
