Barack Obama's brilliant speech on race and politics was a courageous leap to educate Americans about the complexity of race relations in this country. He exposed the often ignored nuances that exist between white and non-white people. Obama revealed his personal story and put it in a broader context to show how and why Americans are stuck in a racial divide.

I think he was honest, right and has shown great leadership.

Obama's revelation makes up for the awful mistake in judgment he made when he didn't leave Reverend Jeremiah Wright's church during the first racial rant. It was wrong, but we've all put up with racial comments from relatives, friends, spouses, children, and coworkers. Haven't we.

Seems to me that a "mistake in judgement" that lasts 20 years is an understatement.

I find it interesting that when I watch Obama speak, I understand "where he's coming from." I want to give him a pass and over look those "little things" that I would normally be disagreeable to. Then, when I sit and reflect, I'm disgusted with myself for falling for his powers of persuasion.

He's a great speaker and the manner in which he speaks is so persuading. But that's all. If he were running for Speech Class President, he'd get my vote. But not for president of the USA.

C'mon do you really think the wrote that speech? You can't be serious! He may have delivered it but you can bet the farm that he did not write it. He through his white grandmother under the city bus...and today he told an interviewer to explain it..and he said "she is a typical white person who is afraid of people she doesn't know...(like a black man walking past her)..if my grandson, who I raised and offered the world to talk about me like that..I would disown him. Obama doesn't know anything about America and to lump all of us white people as "typical" angers me to no end.

Ok then, he's a great deliverer of speeches. I'm still not voting for him. But his charisma is impressive. Lots of people are biting his bait. I think it's gonna be really funny if he gets elected and has no idea what to do next. Although I have a feeling he'll be calling his "former" pastor for advice.

Last night on the "Talking Points" segment of his show O'Reilly was talking about Obama's speech and the racial dialogue in this country. O'Reilly said that we are never going to be able to engage in a constructive dialogue on race in this country as long as there are so many bogus charges of racism. He's right. Whites in America know that they can't engage in any honest dialogue on racial matters because there will always be some race-baiter out there who is going to start yelling racism. Whenever you say anything of a critical nature about a black person in this country ... whether you're criticizing actions or beliefs ... you can bet your last dollar that somewhere someone is going to start yelling "racist" in your face. Better just to keep your mouth shut and go about your business.

Denise,

You''re right, it was a brilliant speech and he obviously is a brilliant person. Just a little ahead of his time. Another 8 years in the senate and he would probably have enough exposure to the way our government works.

Denise, I am a white person, but some of the strongest role models in my life were black people. I am originally from the panhandle of Florida and both of my parents were in business and employed many black people over the years. When they passed away, the church was packed with both black and white people because they loved my parents. I was taught to respect all people and I think Barack Obama is definitely a leader, but just ahead of his time.

And you are so right, we have all put up with bigoted and ridiculous remarks from friends and coworkers, I can't say family , thank goodness, but I am old enough now to say enough is enough and I no longer stay silent and cringe when people say ridiculous things about black people or people from other countries. I have worked and been neighbors with both black people, asian people, etc. and have tremendous respect for their morals and work ethnic. They make tremendous neighbors, Americans trying to achieve and leave their mark on society. You go girl!

RandyLo,

If you don't think Obama talked to his Grandmother before he got up on National Television and made that speech, then you don't understand anything about the relationship between a Grandmother and their Grandsons. He obviously loves her and respects her for all the things she did for him growing up. He was simply trying to point out, as Denise said, all the nuances that exist between white and non white people. But what people should always remember is that we are all god's children and we should love one another.

I find it amazing that because someone is an eloquent speaker, he is able to get a 'pass' on these issues. I don't have a problem with Obama as a black person. I have a problem with the fact that he has campaigned as a person who can transcend the race issue completely -bring all nationalities together- yet he spent 20 years in the pew of someone who *according to Obama himself* "use(d) incendiary language to express views that have the potential not only to widen the racial dividebut views that denigrate both the greatness and the goodness of our nation..."

Now tell me, why should I vote for him again? If Hillary's pastor came out with Anti American and/or anti black/white sermons would her 'explanation' be received with as much love and forgiveness as Obama's has been?

P.S. Would someone please list just ONE accomplishment this man has under his belt as an elected official?

ReverendCirca53,

I have never been one of them white Ho's in the tight t-shirts, but thanks for the compliment. You are obviously a redneck and they come in all shapes and sizes, walking the streets of New York and Detroit in suits and ties or cruising the streets of Tampa and St. Pete, oh well, just plain dumb idiots.

From Hal Lindsey...
"One thing is for sure. Rev. Wright's many public statements reflect a different Jesus than the orthodox Jesus I have studied for over 52 years. And no wonder, since Wright claims his "black value system" is based on what he calls Black Liberation Theology, which he says he got from the "Liberation Theology" developed in Nicaragua during the 1970s.

This Liberation Theology was condemned as a false doctrine by Pope John Paul II after then-Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) investigated it. All orthodox Christian leaders also condemned it. It is a Marxist-based revolutionary movement, disguised as "Christian," that uses violence when needed to overthrow governments and populations."
..and on that note I say...
My guess is Obama is the speech giver not the speech writer! He has a machine working him..just like Hillary. I listened again tonight on one of the sermons where the Rev. insults Oprah, Clarence Thomas,Tiger Woods, Condoleeza Rice,....He not only is a bigot against Whites ...he hates Blacks that have applied their God-Given talents and have become beacons of light for ALL PEOPLE EVERYWHERE!!!!!! The Reverend is a hateful, ugly man and I don't want to try to understand him.

Obama did give a brilliant speech which from all accounts, he wrote for himself.

As a speech major, I can tell you that he may be the best speaker since Barbara Jordan (my goodness, did i love to hear her).

The bigots have crept out of their slime pits and their views exude the stench of their corrupt bile. We all know who they are.

They are not however those who question the inexperience to govern or the overdue comdemation of a bigoted preacher.

These are legitimate points and will ultimately be the downfall of this very gifted man. He will be as the phoenix and will rise from the ashes to lead....it will just not be now I suspect.

Wow..... Where is the outcry over John McCain being best buds w/John Hagee, Rod Parsley and the rest of the tv evangelists calling for the end of Islam and bringing on "The Rapture"?

Tom DeLay, Joe Lieberman & John Hagee are the best of buds. Where's the outcry there?

Good to know ignorance and intolerance knows no bounds.

Especially when facts are easy to find in this day and age. I guess it's easier to hate than use critical thinking skills?

How great for America.

Hatred is always the easier option MO.

The soul of the bigot is a vessel empty of understanding and full of spite.

Reason has no quarter.

Love is a fearful vapor.

YOU know who you are, don't you?

Unfortunately, many who hold themselves out to be messengers of morality and righteousness are the greatest pretenders.

Fix your specs, dingle-dangle....I have not endorsed the lad to replace our esteemed "leader" G.D. (talking with marbles) Bush.

Quite the contrary. Some time seasoning in DC will a. give him the necessary experience or b, add him to the long list of experienced liars, crooks and thieves.

I do not believe that, despite his great speech, he can overcome his afilitation with the racist Wright.

First to Denise...Sorry, but I'm not giving him a "pass". We are not talking about a man whose family "happens upon" a church only to find out that its leader espouses such radical ideals. We are talking about a TWENTY YEAR RELATIONSHIP with Wright to whom Obama refers as a "mentor".

This goes DIRECTLY to the heart of Obama's character and judgment. PERIOD.

And the "...we've all put up with racial comments," argument does not hold water, either. Two WRONGS do NOT make a RIGHT.

MoonOwl, trying to shift this back on McCain is equally invalid. I do not recall hearing McCain mentioning Hagee's or Parsley's name as "mentors". "Outcry" over his association with Joe Lieberman??? The SAME Lieberman that was your party's VP candidate in 2000? What's up with THAT?

As I have already noted, this goes back to Obama's JUDGMENT. I don't want this guy using his aforementioned "judgment" when it comes to making crucial foreign (or domestic) policy decisions for our nation.
