Do you know where Uganda is on a map? Have you heard of the LRA? Do you know who Rosetta is? Well...Uganda is a small East African country...LRA stands for the Lord's Resistance Army, a rebel group led by a former altar boy who abducts children to turn them into child warriors...and Rosetta, she is simply a 17 yr old from La Crescenta High who's never been to Africa.....so what do all these things share in common?? Rosetta is committed to saving as many Ugandan children as possible, you see, as we speak, everyday for the past 20 years the LRA has virtually hunted down children in northern Uganda as young as 5 yrs old...rebel leaders barge into their villages, rape the women and even little girls, murder anyone who gets in their way, and then force little boys to slaughter their parents with their own hands. It's hard to forget the stories I heard from LRA refugees who after they are forced to kill their parents with a machete, were told in some cases to eat part of their remains as part of their indoctrination into their new life as a warrior with the LRA. It is sickening to hear, to utter...but friends, this is what life has been like for almost 20 yrs in northern Uganda and STILL, so many of us don't even know what or where is Uganda! Hey, I was there...before travelling there in Sept. of 2005, I also was ignorant to this crisis. And Rosetta is soo cool in my book, because at age 17 she has done her own research about Uganda and the kids...and get this, she started her own school club called "Save Uganda" to raise money for the kids who manage to escape and need money for food and rehabilitation from years of physical and mental trauma. I am so humbled! Finally, I challenge you to spread the word, everybody needs to know about these "Invisible Children"..which if you get a chance you should also check out, a great documentary on the crisis shot and produced by unsuspecting high school students who ventured off into Africa clueless of the plight of these Ugandan children and their families. In case you missed the story on Rosetta and her mission to make a difference, check out the story here...I know the facts are brutal to even listen to, but it is a reality for thousands of LRA child warriors.

Here you see a picture of one shelter in northern Uganda where little ones walk to and from their villages for safety, hoping to avoid being kidnapped or murdered by LRA rebels. Don't be fooled by my smile, it was soo painful to be there...these children are all alone...sleeping on dirty rags as a "mattress" on the concrete...no electricity....no food....and the stench inside, so pungent its hard to breathe...amongst it all look at their little faces, some are still smiling...they are so precious and will always remain in my heart!

Here are huts where some of the "luckier" families live...inside there is absolutely nothing... this is what I call surviving...

They may already have died.. we met these beautiful women of northern Uganda dying of Aids at a Catholic Relief Services hospice..they were making beaded bracelets to help raise funds to keep the facility open...

This ad really boggles my mind...talk about another world...can you imagine having to be on the look out for land mines? We sure take a lot for granted...

There is soo much more...but I hope you are inspired to make a difference whether its sending money to a non-profit, or simply talking to your neighbor about this...we all can make a difference.

If you have any similar experiences I would love to hear from you and see your pictures!! Thanks!

EE

I have never heard of this happening in Uganda, and quite frankly that is very sickening and tragic to hear happening. Children are supposed to be symbols of innocence.

This was a very good blog topic to have posted and I'll be doing a piece on my website about this.

Thank you Elizabeth for sharing this.

EE,

Interesting topic, and it it's irritating to know that the UN does nothing about it. And what's worse is that many African countries are in similar disarray. The movie "Blood Diamond" touched on this situation, but under a different pretense.

So I don't get what the role of the UN is anymore. Isn't it their job to stop these things? I get the feeling that the UN is more and more irrelevant.

Trdonovan, Samo,and Rich...

You guys are the best! Thanks for reading up on this...I am honored you care enough to express your opinion and will hopefully spread the word..Rich you asked about an organization..I can only speak to the relief workers I met and saw in action. What an incredible experience..I mean these people could be back home living in the lap of luxury, but instead they are subjecting themselves to very harsh living conditions just so they can help! Please keep them also in your prayers! As far as groups go, I was very impressed with Mercy Corps and CRS (Catholic Relief Services)..both are non-profits also providing relief in Darfur..you can get their info on google...any probs let me know. TR...thanks for including this story on your website...and Samo, your comments are on point with so many of the remarks made to us by refugees who are desperate for a better life. One idea, is to write/e-mail your local congressman/woman asking them to put the plight of these people on their radar. As you know, our Congress is wrapped up in so much, other than the Iraq war--who knows if they are even aware of these so called "Invisible Children" in Uganda?

And to Mr. LOL...Thanks for the love!

Keep going strong everybody!

Ddain...

Great point...heard that before also! Many critics say the UN simply has no teeth, look at what happened in Rwanda. My concern is the following-- you see when my colleague Cristy and I obtained an interview from the Uganda Ambassador in D.C. on the crisis..she essentially denied charges of mass violence and alleged the situation was getting better because the government was successfully fighting rebels. At the time, we spoke with the woman, we had just been in northern Uganda and that is not what we saw. Makes you wonder, huh?

Keep thinking...asking...the bottomline is, it keeps us all on our toes.

Thanks!

Would the world be worse off without the UN? I mean, isn't this a perfect example of how incompetent and corrupt they are. How does Kofi Annan get away with his oil for food scandal, and not face any punishment, while people the UN is supposed to be helping and saving are dying, or living in conditions not fit for cockroaches.

I guess the UN is too busy giving out sanctions against Iran that won't accomplish a damn thing.

Well thanks to Elizabeth for getting me all fired up and pissed at the UN. Again.

Hi Elizabeth,

You are a special woman. You've been inspiring many to help and inspired me to do more.

On another note, Channel 5 did a piece on the most expensive countertop in the world but they only showed 15 x 15 samples (I didn't watch the piece, because I only watch Channel 11).

We are remodeling our showroom and we are installing an actual top, call Concetto by Caesarstone. It would great if you did a show from our studio in Redondo Beach. E-mail me for details.

Keep up the great work.

E-
I have never been to Uganda, but I hope to change that soon. My sister and her husband are preparing for a two year stay in Uganda to work at an AIDS orphanage. I want to do anything I can to help the people and especially the children of Uganada. And others would feel the same way if they only knew about it--Rosetta is proof of that!

Hi Elizabeth,

I think if the Uganda Ambassador in D.C. denies charges of violence and alleges "the situation is getting better" then she must be in a deep denial. If this tradjedy began 20 years ago,(I suspect it's been much longer), then the warriors of the LRA are likely to be some of the children who were abducted and torchered. These people are likely to have deep seeded emotional problems and self loathing. They are likely to be sociopathic also. I think all Americans should speak up and against this inhumanity. Thank you for sharing this story with us, we need to know what is going on and it is also encouraging to know that our youth cares about this.

I don't have the words...it just breaks my heart to know that type of horror is still going on there...Hotel Rwanda, Blood Diamond -- seeing it makes me really want to get involved somehow, donate, I wish I could adopt and care for all those kids! It is really sad that the LRA does that to innocent little children. You are an amazing person Elizabeth, as well as Rosetta!

Hi Elizabeth

I met you while doing the Gula walk back in 2005.(I was the one giving advice about how to do the route next time, and the one that told you about Clay Aiken making a trip to Uganda...I believe he is making another one very soon...maybe you can talk to him) I was hoping to see more about your experience in Uganda on Fox news. I hope they realize people want to hear more about what goes on in other countries from first hand reports from people like you who have no agenda but are just reporting what they see. How can we help or expect others to help if they don't realize what is happening. I hope you can get your experience out there in a more public way, and I hope Fox news will help you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. We need more people like you and Rosetta, who see what is happening and are proactive in making a change...they say one person can't make a difference, but Rosetta is proving them wrong....I hope more people will follow her lead.

I also want to comment on what Oprah has done...I think she is smart in building a school and giving the girls an education....education equals power....I think funding and building schools is so important...You can keep throwing bags of rice and water at people, but it isn't going to change their life, but for that moment...they need help that will help them help themselves

I seen this story when you first aired it. I really hate to see these people like this. It gave me a good feeling though to know that this youngster "Rosetta" took a great interest in helping out the gente from that country. My respects go out to both you and Rosetta!
