Do you care to know why I am as conservative as I am? Well, I'm going to tell you why anyway...

First off, I was raised in a very conservative household. Although my father's father was definitely what you would consider blue collar, my father is conservative (thank God). And he's 91 years old, by the way. My mother's father was an officer in a local steel mill up north. They weren't rich, but he was definitely white collar and conservative all the way.

I grew up in Venice, on the west coast. My American Government teacher in high school was a retired Army colonel and had worked in the State Department as well as serving on the city council. Colonel Walker was a staunch conservative. He loathed the USSR and Red China (as China was known thirty years ago). He taught us that capitalism is the backbone of our economic system and used to call welfare recipients "suckers off the public t*t". Colonel Walker passed away not long ago at age 90, God rest his soul.

What really galvanized conservatism for me was the 2004 hurricane season. Since we moved to Alachua County in 2003, we had been living in a mobile home on five acres in a rural part of the county. Hurricane Jeanne planted a large hickory tree smack dab in the middle of our house. We took our insurance check (insurance??? what's THAT???) and, along with a whopper of a mortgage, built a two-story house on our five acres.

You know what? The government didn't build my house for me. The government didn't give me a $2000 debit card. We did get $400 from FEMA but that didn't even make the security deposit that we had to pay on the apartment that we lived in during the fourteen months that it took to get our house built. FEMA told us that we didn't qualify for more because, get this...WE HAD INSURANCE!

My wife and I have been married for fifteen years. We've never taken a dime (FEMA's $400 notwithstanding) from anyone and, you know what...we wouldn't want to. I just am sick to death of people whining because "the government" hasn't given them this or that.

THAT, my friends, is why I am conservative - and damned proud of it.

"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18).

Accepting even a penny, much less $400, from FEMA undoes the whole basis of your pride.

Floyd, excellent post! And please don't take this the wrong way, but everything you mentioned is not just why you're a conservative, you were taught morals and the right way to live life, being responsible. So if this is the case, more people need to be a conservative. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one alone feeling the same way about people whining, and blaming the Government for everything that happens.

I heard someone say today that "welfare reform is humanitarian." To get people off government stipend and get them working and proving their self-worth sets the stage for self-love, creative hearts and minds and once they taste that freedom they will never go back and they will pass it on to their next generation. I never looked at it like that but it does make sense.

Sensible, who cares that he took the $400. Being a conservative, Floyd, probably doubled that and more to a worthwhile cause or charity. That's what conservatives do, they give and do it anonymously without bragging. Libs just sit around complaining and barking orders and tell the rest of us what we should do with the tax dollars and if it isn't enough then tax some more, all the while they are living large or in the case of Al Franken not paying his own dang taxes.
Sorry, off topic, FF.

Excellent post, Floyd. America was based upon creating an independent nation filled with independent people. Back in the day, this was held as a matter of importance as family moved across the country building homes and farms and maintaining their land, which they struggled against the elements to keep as their own. They were strong and determined people who forged this country.
And just look at what we've become: a nation of whiners who cry that the government has turned their back on the people of America. Well, here's a news flash for the whiners: American government was formed for the people, by the people. Anyone who whines because the American government turns their back on the people MUST realize that it is the American people who have turned their backs upon themselves since we are all apart of the governmental body.
It's self-worth that makes the country strong; and it's the lack of self-worth that is causing this country to fail.

Well, I don't have a lot. One thing for certain, is that I have worked for everthing I do have.
I do NOT want to subsidize, or support anyone not willing to do the same.

That is one of the many things that makes ME conservative.

Randy, I think Wesley Snipes is another liberal with even bigger tax woes than Al Freaken! LOL!

What. They want us to give away our hard earned money to welfare, while they refuse to give thier easily earned millions that are owed! Tsk, tsk. Shame on them.

Joe, while I don't claim to be a bible expert, I don't think you really understand what that quote of yours means. I don't think it pertains to Floyd's situation.

There's a big difference between accepting monetary aid after a natural disaster (like say, oh, a tree falling on your home during a hurricane) to help get by, and completely relying on the government welfare system so that you don't have to work.

Conservatives, like Floyd, pick themselves up, and do whatever they need to do, short of breaking the law or waiting on the government to help them, and get back on track.

Remember the difference between the Katrina victims of New Orleans, and the wildfire evacuation victims in California? Big difference, eh? Bet you can guess which group was mostly liberals, and which group was mostly conservatives.

You Conservatives are a strange bunch....

you and your glorious leader put us into a war , in a country where we are NOT wanted, without UN backing, its costing us BILLIONS every day (let alone the lives of our brave armed service people)

Yet you begrudge helping those who need help-your own country men and women here at home...
our own citizens.
Explain please ...

I cannot explain everything Brit, but, I can say this for how I see things...

Conservatives (at least this one) do not begrudge helping those people who need it and can't help themselves... We (I) are just sick and tired for footing the bill for those that can and don't! If welfare actually helped people get on their feet (I know there are a few exceptions... a FEW) it would be okay. But, it seems to merely breed welfare

Amen to what Droopyz just said!

Personally I feel that I am a conservative because I detest communism. I do not feel that I am too far to the right though.

You see, in my humble opinion, leaning too far to the right can lead to communism, just as leaning too far to the left can also lead to communism. I am at that happy medium, and I fall on the conservative side of it. I don't like the government to interfere with my personal life, or the lives of others. Sooooooo...

I am pro choice
I am pro gun
I am pro death penalty
I am against illegals
I believe in giving a hand up not a hand out.

I'm gonna IGNORE all those moveon.org talking points there,,FB..

Coming from one who's OWN Government invaded the Falklands,,and GIVEN that YOUR country ASSISSTED in our, and by OUR,,I mean the civilized world's War on the forces of TERRORISM,, I don't REALLY think that YOU have any right to be so "Wright"giously Indignant about what THIS country does..

It SEEMS that YOUR country KNOWS the right things to do EVEN if YOU don't know WHAT THE HELL you're talking about..

As for the people of Iraq,,THEY'RE helping to REBUILD their country and are MORE then HAPPY for the assisstance..THAT'S more then you can say for MANY on the Public Dole HERE in THIS country..

As for the crack "Yet you begrudge helping those who need help-your own country men and women here at home...
our own citizens."

THAT'S Micheal Moore talking..We spend MORE each and EVERY year helping those in need then ANY OTHER COUNTRY..And ALWAYS Have..

There was a comment comparing Katrina Victims to the wildfire victims in California..A very ACCURATE comparison as far as it goes but one need NOT be so expansive in making that comparison..

ONE would easilly believe that ONLY New Orleans and ONLY Blacks were the vicitms of Katrina if one restricted oneself to YOUR apparent INFORMATION Sources..THAT was NOT the case..The Fact of the matter is that Katrina MISSED New Orleans and hit SQUARELY on the Mississippi Coast causing MOST of the damage there,, by FAR..New Orleans’s plight arose NOT from a HURRICANE,, but from a break in a LEVI,, the possibility of which was KNOWN to be a Potential Hazzard sin

since 1965..Elected Officials IGNORED this for some 40 years..

And What happens??A NEWS blackout of the struggles of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and their SUCCESSES at rebuilding and a BLITZRIEG of Stories of Hardship over a people who ran to Porno Shops and Liqueur Stores the moment they got their grubby little hands on ANY cash....
It’a ALSO interresting the NEWS BLACKOUT of the SUCCESSES of the NEW REPUBLICAN Governor of Louisiana who’s done MORE for the people of Louisiana in his short time in office then the DEMOCRATS have done in 75 years..

JUST like a LIBERAL to want to KEEP the “Po” Drunk and distracted with watching Porno….

But Hey!! Far be it from ME to criticize Liberals..LMAO….

Yeah,,JUST like a Liberal Denocrat..

KEEP the "PO" poor..KEEP them Drunk,,Keep them under your thumb,,BUS them ALL over the place when it comes time to VOTE but then,, THEN,,Leave those SAME Busses to get FLOODED rather then to EVACUATE them and POSSIBLY SAVE their Lives..

Now THAT'S a sense of Humanity that WE can ALL be proud of...

Brit
Your people have managed to take a perfectly good Country and screw it up so badly with your liberal views that only an Arab would move there.

I have noticed that a common thread seams to run through most of your comments and that it is dissatifaction with The US it's People and it's basic morality

If things here are so incompatable with your personal views why not go home........I mean think about it.....it's not really that expensive and would relieve you of all this aggravation

Thanks for leavin me out Floyd... lol!

I am pro-choice also, but not to the standard definition.
It is my belief that each woman should be given one choice. If one chooses to engage in sexual activity, one must accept the consequences no matter what that might be (std, baby).
If that choice is not given to the woman... than she still has one choice. That is my belief... not sure where that puts me on the liberal/conservative scale.

I am pro military
I am anti illegal immigration
I am pro fair tax
I am pro death penalty
I am pro gun, but also pro harsher gun penalties (and getting rid of crappie judges who don't hold fast to the standard)
I am anti parents who think their children do no wrong
I am pro-American and Anti-communist

Sorry, Droopy!

You get it, as well. And you are also RIGHT ON TARGET.

At the risk of dragging the abortion debate front & center...I happen to think that the government has no business deciding the issue. Does that mean that I'm "pro abortion"? Not on your (or your baby's) life. But I see it as a "necessary evil".

Keep the faith!

I am your normal, middle-class, "working Joe". But I am also a capitalist and believe that nothing good comes from socialistic entitlement programs. I believe in hunting down and killing terrorists like the little rats that they are (except that that statement is denigrating to rats). I grew up in a very conservative household and was fortunate enough to have had a conservative American Government teacher (a retired US Army colonel) who helped to show me the "right" way. Are there things that I would like to change? Absolutely. But NOT the kind of "change" being espoused by Hillarock Obaminton. I have lived in Florida for forty of my forty-eight years. I've been a big Pink Floyd fan since my teen years hence the moniker, FloydFreak. My friends call me Freak, Floyd, and FF. The libs call me a neocon. I wear that badge proudly. Please note that I enjoy engaging in spirited discussion - even with those with whom I disagree. There are a number of individuals on these boards whom I respect even if I DO think that they're out of touch with reality. Please note also that I do not tolerate personal attacks on my character. If you think that I'm full of BLEEP, you have the right to say so. But drag my character into the gutter and expect retaliation in kind with FloydFreak's own brand of sarcasm. Keep it civil and we'll get along fine. To those of you that see good in America and want the OPPORTUNITY for prosperity for all - and do not just seek to soak it to "the rich", I say God bless you. And God bless America!
