Jillian from "Good Day LA" posed an interesting question today... I responded to it on the board, and decided to add the post to my blog here. I got some kind words about what I wrote, and I feel very good about my answer.
One question I heard Jillian ask just as they finished revealing the "Knock
Knock Makeover" results today. (Monday, May 19).. do people keep up with their
makeovers? I can speak from my opinion and my own personal
perspective..... The broad picture answer is "it depends". For me,
personally, it's "when you find the right professional" and "no".
Do I think that all the "Knock Knock" makeover people maintain their
look? Well, first of all, with "Knock Knock Makeovers", it's a shock...
You didn't choose to walk in to a salon, after thinking a long time to
make a change. A "Knock Knock Makeover" is a surprise. It just happens. The candidates have very little time to absorb what's happening. So, it depends on
how much these women feel comfortable with the changes that have been
done.
One and a half years ago, I had a day of beauty at
José's. I had a certificate for a number of services... hair, makeup...
Edgar had done my makeup. Do I keep up with the makeup aspect of it? To be
honest, no. (Edgar knows, so I can 'fess up) Just like today's makeover lady, I don't wear makeup,
either. In my situation, Edgar really did try to explain, and he wrote
things down for me. But Edgar is so good, I'm just too intimidated to
even try. I'm too afraid I won't do justice. That's where being a
scientist, like I am, comes at a disadvantage.
However, because of
time limitations (I don't know how long the team stays once the camera
is turned off), today's lady probably didn't have the same thing that I
did (having Negah explain makeup, Emmanuel explain hair). Without some
of that guidance, and with today's lady being uncomfortable with
makeup, chances are that she won't wear it again.
Well. . the
hair side of things? In my own experience...I keep up with it...
mostly. I have been very very lucky that when I was at José's that 1
1/2 years ago, José himself cut my hair. I've been a strong advocate of
JE's work for YEARS. I'd feel guilty if I strayed too far from what
he's done.
I found someone locally who helps me maintain in between visits to LA.
(someone who doesn't mind that I visit LA and José once in a while!) The only
thing is that a few months before I know I'm going to LA, I have a
tendency to stop getting trims at my local place... saving up for a
visit to JE's. I think JE... and probably my local guy... is none too happy when I do that.
So, it depends on whether today's lady can find a way to have the new
look maintained, and is comfortable with it. Today's "Knock Knock"
Makeover person is going through a lot in her life (did I hear
correctly that she may be losing her house???), and just may not be
able to keep up!
With respect to "Knock Knock Makeovers", the
most important part is the experience itself. It's knowing that
someone cared to write a letter and thought about you. From my personal
experience going through my own makeover, one of the other values of the experience is that it does 'force'
you to look at yourself differently. It may shake your routine up
(which can be a very good thing).
In summary, I don't think
that the makeover folks will necessarily keep up with things. The
greater answer is "it depends". But it was the experience that counted.
Living around several major East coast cities, one is aware of crime, and the darker side of humanity. We see it in our news every day. The stories are so negative, and focus on the worst of what people can do to each other. Does not do good things for the spirit or the mood! I've been given advice to stay away from the news, because it hurts the mood. Despite the advice I've been given, I feel too out of the loop if I avoid the news... So, I still watch. On occasion, a positive human interest story will come along. Some story that talks about some good person doing something good for another person or group of people. I'm grateful when I see stories like that. Reminds you that there still are good people out there. My hope is that these positive news stories inspire, too. Inspires someone to go out and do something good. Inspires someone to be a better person .. maybe to even think how they're treating people that they encounter in their own every day lives.
These days it seems like society is a little ruder, and a little colder. Maybe a side effect of the availabilty and nearly instantaneous coverage of the sadder and darker aspects of life. So, I suggest that maybe news divisions do more positive human stories. Remind people of the best side of humanity, instead of hammering on the worst!
