Did I read that story correctly?  An 11 year old girl, home alone?  Okay, Dad made it home in time--this time.  This 11 year old CHILD was lucky this home invasion didn't turn into something much worse.  Mom, Dad, why was this 11 year old CHILD home alone?  Just curious.  Was the babysitter late?

Some 11 year olds are quite responsable and other shouldn't be left alone for any reason!
Thr truth is, you can't watch your kids 24/7. Do you let your kids out to play? Ever let a kid ride their bike around the neighborhood? Anything can happen when a kid is out of the house alone or even with friends! This ANYTHING just happen to take place when the kid was home alone. At least the kid was smart enough to know what to do.

I can't argue with you mmustangg. All I know is my kids are grown so I don't worry about that sort of thing now. But I did when they were 11. When I went to work, if they weren't in school, they spent the day with Grandma. I took them over on my way to work and picked them up on my way home. I was lucky that when they were in school, classes started before I had to be at work. After school, they were picked up by a family member. But, times are different now, I realize that. Many parents today do not have the luxury of available family. Yes, anything can happen. Sad isn't it?

Unfortunately, many after care or day care groups stop taking kids once their out of 5th grade or hit 11. The ones you can find are usually between $100.00 to $200.00 a week, even the Y....

I have to agree with you, kat. Kids who are unsupervised are also doing drugs and playing the choking game and stock piling guns in their rooms and all sorts of other things that parents never seem to know about until it's too late. It's a shame the world is turning a blind eye to children and putting them into situations where they aren't mature enough to make good decisions and ending up in dangerous predicaments.

Well, I reckon that might be coming to an end soon. If the economy continues to crash no one will be able to afford childcare and a parent will have to stay home to take care of their own kids. Along with reducing down to one car, reduce the electronic gadgets, get rid of the excess junk food, grow a garden, make their own cloths, etc. In the end, we may come out on top for all citizens!

Sorry, I'm a terminal optimist!

Back on the subject, it is legal for an eleven year old to be home alone however, as mentioned in one of the other responses, all children are not alike therefore parental judgement is required regarding each childs maturity. At eleven, my parents would "test" me by putting me in charge of my younger siblings and going out for an hour or two as a training exercise to learn responsibility. I didn't however have to be alone everyday but the story about the burglar didn't indicate whether that was the case or not.

Glad he had a gun, as I've stated in other blogs, I don't own one but this is a case where one was warranted.

The economy has made it to where hard working parents can't afford daycare and if you have no relatives then you're up a creek..now let you be on WELFARE though and the state will gldly cover your childcare, medical and housing and groceries...WHAT A CROCK OF S##T AND SLAP TO THE FACE OF THE TRUE HARDWORKING PERSON ! It's a toss up where the benefits are better,JAIL-PRISON, OR BEING ON WELFARE AND HAVING KIDS FOR A LIVING THAT TAXPAYERS SUPPORT !!!
