Clearly after watching this show, I know I'm not smarter than a fifth grader.

Here's the question that stumped me: Are fiction books filed using the Dewey Decimal System? I went blank. To be totally honest, I'm not sure I ever learned the whole Dewey System. Asking for help in finding a book, always seemed to work for me. Librarians are nice. :-)

Obviously, that would have cost me dearly if had been a contestant on the show.

Despite being outsmarted by a fifth grader, I found the show to be totally entertaining--apparently I'm one of millions who thought so.

“Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” debuted to record numbers on Tuesday.

The show was seen by 26.5 million viewers! Did you see it? If so, fess up. Are you smarter than a fifth grader? Or did those little brainiacs make you look bad.

Gina

Btw, fiction books are not filed using the Dewey Decimal System. They are filed by the authors last name.

Dear Gina,

I saw the show and thought that it was just great!

In "Are you smarter than a fifth grader," the contestants make a lot of money and the questions are tough, but not quite Jeopardy tough, which makes the show a winnable combination for almost anyone.

It also makes the kids look very smart, which is great for their self-esteem, and a positive educational model for all children who watch the show.

I was entertained and I learned something too.

Like, what's a trapezoid?
or
How many decades in 2 millennnium?

I think that this show will do very well.

Great topic.

Hey beepbeep,
You're right about the winning combination of the show.
Since the questions aren't ridiculously difficult, I found myself saying,"Ok, bring it on." I would have won some money...but getting to the million--no way.
I'll try again next show. Good luck to you too. :-)

I like this show! Though I was able to answer most of the questions the one I got stumped on was when we celebrate Columbus Day. My mind just went blank. I have two teens at home and they thought it was funny that my husband and I had some trouble until they were stumped! It's a great show to watch as a family.

Actually, this show bugs me.

I watched some of it the last 2 nights only because I had Idol on and rolled into it a little.

Perhaps it's just Jeff Foxworthy who bugs me so much. Never before has a guy built a "career" on one joke that was miles away from being funny. But that's another issue.

The really annoying part about this show is that they are obviously selecting contestants who are not the brightest bulbs in their proverbial boxes. I'm pretty sure I would not get selected if I tried out to be a contestant on this show because I am too smart. I understand that's sort of the gimmick here, but I find it lame. I'd much rather watch smarter people get challenged a little more. It doesn't even have to be Jeopardy-smart. But a show like "Who wants to be a millionaire" did it better because it started out easy but built up to a pretty challenging level where you had to really be pretty smart to get some of the tougher questions, and it made it more fun to play at home.

All I find myself doing with this dumb show is screaming at the dumb contestants because they don't know that Columbus Day is in October! C'mon! Personally, I think this show will have a big drop-off over the next few weeks and will be gone by summertime.

And again, the Jeff Foxworthy factor makes it a virtual lock for a quick death. I hope.

O.K. I think that this is one of those ideas that sounded good at the beginning but is going to backfire. I don't know about the rest of the world's 5th graders, but my 5th grader already thinks she is all knowing. If these adults keep getting stumped and having to cheat off of a child's paper, I don't know. I see a lot of parents losing ground on this one. I mean, my 5th grader was tickled pink at the idea that these kids were smarter than thier adult competition. This is unnecessary proof that we don't know half of what we think we know about anything. And, although we should be proud of our children and the educational progress they're making, I think this show is going to make fools out of a lot us parents that think we know it all. It will take the steam out of a lot of our arguements about doing homework, and how we've been there and done that. I'll be honest, I can barely help with homework now.

ONCE AGAIN WE ARE BACK TO ENTERTAINMENT. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT CHANGE THE CHANNEL. SOMETIMES PEOPLE JUST DON'T LIKE A COMEDIAN WHO HITS A SOFT SPOT. HAVE SEEN FOXWORTHY LIVE AND HONESTLY HE IS MUCH BETTER AT THAT. HIS FIRST JOKE WAS SOMETHING LIKE " IF THIS MANY PEOPLE HAD WATCHED MY SHOW AS THERE ARE IN THE AIDIENCEI WOULD STILL BE ON TV." SAME WITH HOWIE MANDEL FUNNIER IN PERSON. A NEW SHOW WHERE YOU CAN WATCH WITH YOUR FAMILY AND BE ENTERTAINED IS A GEAT IDEA. THANK YOU TIVO.

I'm afraid to try. If I couldn't answer most of them, I'd want to throw my college diploma in the garbage.
