In less than 100 days, on July first, we're all about to have a culture shock! No more driving with our cell phones to our ears. A first offense will cost $20 ... every one after that will be 50 bucks!

Okay ... so this new study comes out from The University of North Carolina Highway Research Center that says that even though California and 5 other states will begin having "handsfree" laws beginning July first .. those laws really won't make much of a difference. There's risk whether you have phone in your hand or a handsfree headset in your ear. Its all in your head! If your mind is not on the road, but somewhere else, you can still have a deadly accident.

We all know if the phone is not in your hand both of your hands can be on the wheel of your car. And, that should save lives. What the study suggests is that if your not focused on the road, but on your conversation, the new law won't matter.

Will it? Are you ready to make the transition? I'll tell you, it doesn't seem to me that these handsfree devices are very good. No matter which one I get it seems the person on the other side of the phone tells me they can't hear or understand me and I keep saying "can you hear me now?"

It won't surprise me one bit if the new handsfree law causes some drivers to develope road rage. How many times do you have to say "can you hear me now" before you throw the phone out the window?

i think it's a great law. i hate people driving while chatting on the phone. it's so annoying. hell it's getting worse. now people are actually texting each other while driving. texting! BLEEP! how can a person type and watch the road??? atleast the new law will stop the texting, i hope. as for the headsets, well if they don't work that well, maybe it's a good thing. atleast the frustration of trying to use one, and failing, might cause a person not to even try. so now a person just wont use a phone while driving, which is the way it should be. if your gonna make a call, get off the road!

I have a neat cell phone and whenever I need to seriously talk, I pull over to the side of the road in a rest area or get off the freeway to a safe area stop and either dial out or receive the call. They will eventually outlaw hands-off, because answering a call is also going to prove to distracting for many. That's like the difference between drinking from an open cup and drinking through a straw. But finally, I am glad to see they will be doing this. Check out my road poem 405-101 at mpschunks site on youtube, you will laugh very hard when you hear that one.

Hey Hal how are ya ? Guilty also. We used to talk to our daughter while she is driving. She now puts me on speaker! You do need 2 hands to drive!
So the new hands free or use your speaker is just the right idea. And we never have a serious or angry conversation on cells while driving either its common sense really I feel.
Really it could matter where your driving too hwy city's or neighborhoods all can be and have distracting things too, even without a phone on so its a great idea anyway.
And SO TRUE texting while driving samo that is just crazy to do I agree!!How do you drive without looking??
Thanks Brenda

A $20 fine, yeah that oughta scare everybody. And no points on your record. Another ingenious invention from the nanny state liberal socialists in Sacramento.

If you're going to make a law, give it some teeth, like a year in jail. Otherwise stop wasting the taxpayers time, and your own.
