Hal Eisner's Blog

Okay ... newsroom fad. Facial hair. Understand that I had my share of the stuff. In my college days and, for awhile thereafter, I had a beard and long bushy hair. I know .. hard to imagine, but true. I was in radio back then and no one could really see me. Then, for a long time, I had a moustache .. some of you might remember that. I wore it on TV back in the 80s.
One day, in the 90s, I had a news director ask me if I ever wondered what it would look like if I took it off. I did. Liked it. Never grew it back.
Fast forward to June 2008. Steve Edwards, Tony McEwing, Michael Brownlee and our 11pm news producer Jeff Schultz all have hair on their chinee-chin-chins. I like it. I like it so much part of me is itching to do it again. The thing is I remember the itch. Running my fingers through it when I had it. Scratching my face when I took it off. I remember how it made me look different. Hmmm .. now that I'm remembering .. maybe -- oh heck -- what do you think? Just curious ...

Hal,

Do you really want to go through the itching and scratching again? And what does your wife think about it? (Now THAT'S more important.)

And now that it's summer, how about the sweat?

All good points! My wife would hate it! My kids might just laugh at me :-) But, like Steve, Tony, Michael and Jeff, I wouldn't have to shave so much!

Hal,

I saw your pictures of your wife: you can tell in my avatar that I'm of Japanese descent. So if your kids laugh, you can put them back in line, and tell them to respect their elders (and that you heard it from a Japanese guy). In a Japanese family, kids could not get away with laughing at a parent. Feel free to show your wife this response; I'm sure she'll laugh.

And yes, I hear you about the shaving!

I'm ready to see what you decide on doing...don't worry, I don't have Photoshop! I also work in the media (radio) so I'm not going to burn my bridges with a prank.

Cheers Hal!

Mystere ... I'm not sure where you would've seen a picture of my wife. There are none out there. My kids love to laugh with and at Daddy and I love it too.

Fenwaydav: The way we work, you never know. I might turn up on the FOX News Channel one of these days or maybe even your local Boston Fox Station doing a liveshot from here for your community.

personally i think you should go for it Hal. why not? if you don't like it, you can always shave it off. i guess with your facial sturcture you should let your side burns grow out a lil bit. maybe down to the end of your ear lobe. then maybe let just the lower part of your chin grow hair. no mustache, that's too 70's retro for ya. i would say do it in a simlar fashion to steve, and tony, but then that's not too original either. so just let the chin grow out. maybe even form it into a single line from mid lower lip to chin. maybe a thin beard. you know from thin side burns, to thin hair along the jaw line, to a then have it all connect to a goatee. just a few ideas. try it out.

Hal,

Someone on staff had a bunch of pictures in his or her photo albums; this person had a picture of you with a Japanese woman. I thought she was your wife...by the way, if she is and you are just saying that you don't have a Japanese wife to protect her identity, that's fine too; I'll leave it at that. But yes, you can still use the line I gave you to goof off with your sons, daughters, or both. Just give them a stern growl with it (ha ha)! Whatever you do, have fun with it Hal. And if you're curious on what my real name is, search through Susan Hirasuna's past blogs...you'll find it somewhere.

From your radio colleague:

"Mr. E." from Cypress.
(and yes, I'm the same guy who emails My13news with that name).

By the way Hal,

If you're in touch with John Beard, I hope he's enjoying his next lot in life, whatever it is. I have plenty of respect for him.

MYSTERE: I'm not sure what picture your looking at, but my wife is not Japanese. As for John, I haven't spoken with him in awhile, but those who have say he's well and doing fine.

SAMO: I had "lambchop" sideburns back in my earliest of college days .. that grew into a bear and moustache .. then I morphed into what I am today. You know what they say ... hair today ... gone tomorrow! :-)

"Hair today...gone tomorrow." Now that is funny! I just might use that one on my best friend if he loses his hair...we're both in our mid 40s, and my best friend's father started losing his hair when he was in his 40s...and the men folk on his father's side all lost their hair. Another crack to add to my list of bald jokes! :-)

Hal, thanks for the heads up on John Beard!

A beard will add ten years to your age, and a goatee might look a little less old. Mustache would be better. Steve Edward's looks HORRIBLE with that grey patchy goatee. I imagine the morning show groupies he surrounds himself with are telling him he looks great but they are lying. He looks 20 years older.
