Have you had one?  Do you have a family member who's had so many they can't count?

I know my doctor ordered a CT scan for me a year ago.  I tossed the lab order because the risk sounded worse than not knowing exactly what my guts look like.

Here's why you should think twice about your next CT scan.

There's been talk now for years about the dangers of ct scans and a possible increased risk of cancer.

But there's new reason to worry and the research is coming from right here in orlando.

If your doctor orders a ct scan for you or your child --- researchers say you should think twice-.

Physicians here in florida and d.C., looked at the medical records of 1,243 random patients.

They wanted to see how much radiation each patient had sustained in the past five years.

What they found they say was shocking.

The study's lead author timothy bullard of orlando regional says he wants to let people know large doses of radiation are not innocuous.

He says there is a need for the technology but it must be used appropriately.

He says often patients are having the same test over and over for different doctors.

The doctor says if you've already had one..... Tell them to get a copy of your first scan or bring a flash drive to make a copy yourself during the test.

If your child needs a ct make sure they put it on a pediatric setting.

CT scans pack a mega-dose of radiation - as much as 500 times that of a conventional x-ray.

Be careful, they do not always pick up everything they are supposed to. I was in the hospital recently and the CT scan did not pick up on something for me. After telling the doctors several times what they should be looking for they sent me home anyways. Now I have a copy of the report and life will get interesting.

On average a CT scan is equal to 50 normal X-rays and it is wise to keep track of how many X-rays you have (BTW 50 a years is a lot! ) but the affect of gamma radiation does heal over time (in addition to the fact that it accumulates) the rule of “thumb” is that any damage done by an X-ray will be completely healed after 18 months so try to limit the amount of X-rays you get but when this is not possible try to put as much time as possible between x-rays ...
