Greetings from New York City!
I took time off and hopped a plane to check out universities with my son this past weekend.
Whew! Just like that, my boy will soon be leaving the nest!

Since he began his college quest, I've come to learn a disappointing fact about one of his top choices, the acclaimed UCLA. Tell me how you think this could happen.

The LA Times reported this past week that nearly 51,000 students applied to the school this year--11,800 were offered admission.
Stunning numbers, but most startling is the number of African American students enrolling at UCLA-- a paltry 100 blacks for the fall of 2006--the lowest in more than 30 years!
Something's woefully wrong when a freshman class does not represent the impressive diversity that distinguishes this state. This is a STATE PUBLIC SCHOOL, afterall!

In the university's defense, admissions policies changed this spring with the goal of netting a more diverse student body. We'll see how "colorful" the results when UCLA releases statistics this summer.

p.s. can you believe, I forgot to bring a camera for my NYC trip?! Otherwise I would've shared pics of us at some sights!

This doesn't make sense. I thought the quote system was alive and well within the UC system. Did UCLA give out the percentages of some these other "diverse" students who were offered admission? How many blacks applied to get in there? That would be an interesting stat to know.

well i'm glad to see that they have accepted a few more blacks in the school. but i don't think a few hundred more is much of a difference. i think ddain brings up a good point. maybe there wasn't maybe black people that wanted to enroll in this school. who knows other then the school. but in my mind i think it's unfair to allow a person of a differnt race to get in because of the color of their skin. i think it should be on how bad a student want's to get in. i rather have a student that's really wants to be apart of this campus, rather then a person of a minority race thats not as commited.

Jean, your topic is centered on a concept of merit. I cannot support your statement (Something's woefully wrong when a freshman class does not represent the impressive diversity that distinguishes this state. This is a STATE PUBLIC SCHOOL, afterall!) as applied to the University of California system. I trust the admissions to Cal Berkeley and UCLA reflect the impressive brain power of diverse college age residents of California. A student at a Cal State University is not limited in her life-long ambitions. Students applying for competitive positions are not ordering dinner at a chain restaurant. How can UCLA compete for black students when Harvard, Yale and Stanford are interested in those same students?
