It's mid July, thick into intern season here at the FOX 11 newsroom. Nothing makes me feel older than seeing all these of bright shining faces, eager to learn, grateful for the opportunity. I agree with USA Today's Craig Wilson when he wrote of these ambitious young people, "...sent by the gods to remind us of our mortality - to tell us annually how far down the road of life we have trudged." God bless 'em, these kids...for one day soon, they will replace us.

I remember it was waaay back when I was one of them. Tagging along with a reporter, Russ Mitchell, at KTVI, the then-ABC affiliate in my hometown of St. Louis. Mr. Mitchell, as I called him, has now been with with CBS News 15 years and I've been in Los Angeles television 12 years. Man, the time flies!

Ok, your turn. Tell me about the young punks, you're dealing with at work.

i detect your arrogance jean! you are one of the few successes! interns? does any of them know how to write? give them a real opportunity--ask them to write news stories. let us viewers know what is going on in this metropolis. my sense is too many in your industry are failing to earn their living each day--for example the fire on valley blvd in alhambra yesterday. whereas the morning team had excellent live coverage which provided viewers fascinating material, Lasko gives the night time report and tells us the building went up "like crazy" and "the thing" did something else. i have observed Lasko giving a smart report of a news story but last night his reporting was childish. he told us the building housed "everything from a bakery to (an herbs store)". encourage the interns to carefully observe the output of the two finest reporters at ch 11-- takasugi and blachford. I am biased; I sit in my living room and pay attention to what is being communicated. in the mornings, i feel espinosa, lozano and decastro are the competent ones who are worthy of their positions. let's see the writing skills of the current interns. no free rides for the pretty boys and girls who are not qualified.

Jean,

First of all let me remind you we are only as old as we feel. And from the way I see you on television every morning you have more spunk in your trunk than any news anchor that early in the morning (okay Tony's not far behind).

I love to watch you and Tony every morning cause I know between all the heartaching headlines you will somehow make me laugh when you two are bashing each other. I know it's sick but it makes me laugh when you say something and Tony just gives you the old role of the eyes. hahahaha

That's right Jean keep him on his toes.

And hold on tight cause you have a lonnnngggg way to go!

Have a good day.

i am that young punk your talking about bean. i started working in construction when i was 15 years old til i was 20. mostly worked from 15-18 on my summer vacation and weekend. i think i was great for the company. i made all the vet's feel useful cuz they taught me everything i know, and made them feel young, because they were able to beat me out on everything. so for a 50 year old to out do a a young punk like me, made them feel good.

when i started working as a production manager i was only 20, and now im 24. i'm not sure how i made my co-workers feel. everyone is older then me, and i'm making more money then all of them. i think in a way they are angry, but also happy that i haven't let it get to my head. i treat everyone with respect, and appriciate the good job everyone is doing. i make sure that each person feels like i'm a friend, and not a boss to them. it's odd ordering around guys twice my age and i haven't gotten used to it. i dont think i ever will, but i try no keep things friendly.

Sebar, Crafty Rockie and Fan, your kind comments brightened my morning!
What a nice fringe benefit to this blog.
Paul, I want to avoid coming across arrogant but Latina is right, these aspiring journalists populate our newsroom with another point of view. Good to keep things fresh.

Jean, you are without a doubt one of the most arrogant, rude, and unprofessional people in television. Day after day that you anchor the morning news with Tony, among others, you just straight out interrupt them constantly!! On top of that you tend to have a very immature opinions and have no relevant sense of pop culture. You really need to turn that attitude around.

Thanks, Pacman for watching my back, bless you.
I apparently tug Tedtug in the wrong way. I always say though, "welcome feedback, good and bad. It's how we get better." Thanks for going to the trouble to write, Ted. I'll take your comments to heart. I'm pleased that you watch me "day after day" as you say. Good to know you're out there.

i believe that we older people should waste as much as possible, and leave more for the younger generations to clean up. that way they will consider "others' like they claim (eg.,Darfur, the environment, etc.), so that they will think of other things besides becoming the next Paris or Brad Pitt. I contribute by driving a SUV.

Since 1995, Jean Martirez has co-anchored the Fox 11 Morning News, seen weekday mornings 5-7 a.m. She's proud of the Emmy Award winning work she's done over the years, but this blissfully married mom of two is happiest hanging out with her close knit family and reading what you've got to blog about.
