At 4 bucks a gallon, it's hard not to rethink every aspect of your commute. Where and how far you travel, where you fill up..these minor details have become much more important. Has the price of gas changed your daily habits? People are trading in their SUV's for scooters, carpooling, riding public transit...doing anything to save a few bucks.

Since gas prices started climbing, more people in our area have decided to park their cars and hop on the bus. PSTA says bus ridership reached an all time high of 1 million in April. HART ridership also jumped 11 percent last year.  And if you're wondering how much you'd be saving if you took the bus... A monthly pass is about $60-80, about the price most drivers pay for ONE full tank of gas.

Even though public transit numbers have skyrocketed, PSTA and HART say gas prices are hurting they're budget too. Both transit agencies are looking at a 25 cent fare increase in fiscal 2009. PSTA is also changing and eliminating unproductive routes.

Public transit is a great idea and should be utilized by as many people that it will serve. The problem that we have had in Florida for so many years is that this area is so sub-urban and the majority of people simply don't want to give up the convenience of having that car there and the ability to motivate at will. Perhaps these fuel prices will motivate them to use mass transit and at the same time give the over crowded highways some relief. We could all use a wake up call and rethink the way our society wastes the natural resources that we have and to conserve more. It is going to take a major lifestyle change for many Americans, but one that needs to take place. These high fuel prices are not going away any time soon, if at all. We need to wake up and conserve!

Public transit in Florida is a joke. Who wants to ride with crack heads, homeless bums and gang bangers everyday? Ever sit at a bus stop and watch who and what gets on and off? SCARY!
What Florida needs is INTELLIGENT planning and some growth restrictions. Whoever allowed and built New Tampa and Wesley Chapel/Meadow Point needs to be publicly beaten, shot and dragged down the interstate by their neckties. I'm a salesperson so I have no choice but to drive. Thankfully it's a company car and they pay the tab...otherwise I would be hurting.
Clean up the busses, add better routes and start working on a train system again..those are easy solutions. Enforce the speed laws...if we all slowed down we could cut demand by a bunch. Fix the roads already...where does all that gas tax go anyway?

Hey everybody, it's Jen, your traffic reporter. I love working for Good Day, we have so much fun in the mornings! Since I am new to the area, i'm still learning the roads and the trouble spots. That's why I need YOU. I want to hear what drives you crazy...which intersections give you a headache, busy spots and construction zones in your area. And i'll help answer any traffic questions you have.
