Hello everyone,

Today was a busy and sad morning on the the 10 freeway, I covered the story in which five people including 2 children lost their lives in a car crash in Ontario. When we arrived on scene officers were still investigating and Coroners had not taken the bodies away. I have to say that when covering stories like this one, where you come face to face with real people who no longer have a chance at life that I realize just how lucky I am to be ALIVE. I know it sounds so simple but once again it reopened my eyes and I sat down for a few minutes and wrote down all the things I'm grateful for...and some were as simple as the fact that "In and Out" makes the best burgers and I love them.... others were a bit more complex, like how grateful I am for my family, my loved ones and my job. I also picked up the phone and text messaged the people in my life that make it worth living and told them all, how much I appreciated and loved them. I wanted to share this with you because somehow I felt that maybe you (whoever may be reading this) could understand were I'm coming from.

I imagine Karen that you prefer to cover the more light-hearted stories instead of these. How often have you covered a story where deceased people were just lying there on the street? Do you ever get used to seeing that?

Mr Ddain,

I really appreciate you writing me back, and well its not often that I see dead bodies at a close distance and honestly no you never get used to that, but for very sad story I have to say that there is an amazing story were I learn about the power of the human spirit and the beauty in all people. Im sure you know what I'm talking about : )

Hi Karen, Thanks for writing this. I took a few minutes out of my busy schedule and called a few people, and text a few more. A couple of them thought I found out I had a terminal illness and was calling people to make amends. But I explained to them that I was calling to let them know that I appreciate them before it's too late and I don't have the chance. Thanks again.

hi karen, i saw you this morning before i left to work on tv.it's pretty sad to hear about a whole family just being killed in a moment. but i know hearing it is different then actually being there. it must of been difficult watching the bodies be taken away from the accident infront of your eyes. i'm reminded of death everyday i go to work. my work is right across the street of a cemetary. also a block away from my home is a over pass that i have to cross where i was in a horrible pile up accident. i was lucky to make it through that alive, and lucky that no one else died in the accident. i might not live life to the fullest everyday, but i try my best to let my love ones around know that i care about them, and that i'm lucky to have them in my life. well i hope tomarrow your story will be a more cheerful one. take care.

sam

I saw that report this morning, and it makes me especially sad to hear something like that where children are involved since I had my son :( I just pick him up and hug and kiss him (well I do that anyway, lol) and just am grateful that he is here and healthy. My brother in law died on the scene on the 10fwy in West Covina about 15 years ago -- brought memories of that.

Karen,

I wrote this to for Amparoenterprise’s blog on her Mom-an inspiration.

Life is precious, Life is dear, Love your mother whether far or near. Keep them close to your heart, 'cause they gave you your first start. Moms are human, as are we, as she rocked you on her knee, love them dearly and love them true for all the things they've done for you.

It is correct, many of us do not get along with our mothers or other members of our family until we realize that it is too late to do so, but regardless of their faults as well as ours, they are still our family who loves us unconditionally.

There are a couple of things that I do every morning, and that is Thank God for allowing me to see another day and say “LOVE You” to my children. If we have relatives that live a distance away, (with the new wave and age of technology today) we can at least communicate once a week. We can e-mail a line, text a few words, call, or do it the old fashioned way WRITE…(SMILE), just a few words of encouragement to let your loved one know, “hey, I am okay and I love you.” With what happened this morning in Ontario it saddens me, and makes me realize how much we take for granted.

I watched that coverage this morning. It was pretty grim. Especially the close-up of the babyseat with blood on it. Tragic.

Karen
Nice reminder to call mom. I went to a funeral today for a friend who's mom died of cancer. She focused on the warm, funny and trying memories that moms can leave us with. We should all remember that mom won't be with us forever. I'll be seeing mine next month. First time since Xmas. Shame on me for not seeing her more!

Yeah that day there was also an overturned freeway on the 10 before arriving to that accident. I had to get to school for my final that day and got there late because of the trailer accident. But i didnt really care because i had also heard about that truck that crashed in Ontario. Yeah i bombed my final and i'll probably have to take that class over. But im just glad ill still be around to take it over. Anyways good to see your blogging Karen

I was so amazed to hear from so many of you who did exactly what I did the day of the accident which was to contact the people I love the most and to be so grateful for my life. Thank you all for sharing your stories, your poems and your thoughts....It inspires to hear from each one of you ! : )
