Mark_Thompson's Blog

I think it was awhile back that I blogged about the ashtray syndrome ...y'know, that thing where smokers flick their butts out the window of their car and out of their lives... It' as though we are living in some giant ash tray and the cigarette butts will just kind of take care of themselves.

Originally this was just an issue of polluting the environment, having those butts washed out to the ocean, accumulating on the street and in parks and on the beaches, etc. Now, it's an issue of safety.

Our area is so dry after a record dry rainy season that we are looking down the barrel of a loaded gun and my loving smokers are doing us no favors with that bad habit.

It's okay to smoke if you cannot kick it, but please dear smokers, you will cost us all potentially the communities in which we live if you get careless at the wrong time and place.

Okay, off my serious jag... next post will be light and frothy... until then get off the butt tossin' please.

The funny thing about this is that almost all cars have ashtrays inside of them! What, is it ok to smoke it but then when you're done the butt is too gross to be in your presence for the few minutes it would take to store it in your own ashtray until you can get to a trash can?

What bothers me the most is people who smoke at restaurants. They can't smoke inside the restaurant anymore so they stand right outside the front door and smoke so everyone has to walk through their cloud as they enter the building. As if it would be that strenuous to walk a few feet further away!

I'm not about to tell anyone to stop smoking but I wish some of the smokers (I say some because I realize they're not all like this) would take that extra second to be a little more considerate.

people are so lazy to clean up after themselves. i can't believe they can't spend a minute cleaning up their own ash tray. so instead they flick it out the car window. of course they don't see anything wrong with this because they are just thinking. "it's only one, how is that gonna hurt anyone?" well 40,000 acres of land is lost in a week. that's how it hurts people.

hey mark,what's up???

i think people are to lazy to put them out in the ashtray so they flick them out a window which is stupid it could start a fire , or one time my dad flicked his ash out the window and one of the burning ash flew in the back seat and got me right in the eye i was like OMG DAD your smoking is dangerous and my brother throws his butts on the grass and i stept on it i told him i should not have to pay for his nasty habit ....great blog :)

Some cars nowadays dont have ashtrays. There isnt one in my husbands car, but he got one of those ashtrays that has a cloth bottom and sand inside so it wont slide off his console. Not only is throwing your butts out the window dangerous due to the dry conditions, and the fact that its possible to hit a motorcyclist (especially a patrolman). It is illegal, it is called littering. It carries a big fine or (like what happened to my brother) they will pull you over and tell you to go pick it up. He was looking for a while before he found one picked it up showed the cop and the cap said "no thats not it keep looking". The second it took to toss his butt out the window cost him about an hour before the cop was satisfied.

You know... yesterday morning on my way to work, I was yelling at the guy driving ahead of me because he was throwing out his butts out the window and almost hitting MY car!!! GRRRRR!!! Keep your BUTTS to yourself, will 'ya?!?!?

About a couple of months ago I was watching a small bush fire as I was driving down the road. Yup! You guessed it! Started by a cigarette butt! Lucky for all, the fire dept. got to it very quickly and was gone by the time I was back from brunch! It was a relatively moist and cold day too, so the small bush fire, thankfully, STAYED small. :-)

BTW: if you recognize my picture, Mark... ummmm... SURPRISE!!!! :-P Read my blog and you'll see what kinds of trouble I've causing! (Yes, we (I mean me) do miss you very much here in San Francisco!!!) ;-)

My wife throws butts all over the yard and theres an ashtrat right next to her. I hate that. Smokers seem to think theres nothing wrong with being surrounded by butts. I put down a half empty beer, only to find that it has a but in it now and after I take the biggest drink of my life of warm ashy, butt beer, it REALLY pisses me off. I don't know what's worse, the people who throw butts everywhere, or the people who spit sunflower seed shells wherever they go.
