Three weeks ago I had the grimmest of tasks. I arrived at the point at which I had to put to sleep my favorite little companion of the last 15 years, a cat that I had rescued those 15 years ago named Lupe. I felt a sense of obligaton to be there to her last breath and she was beautiful to the very last instant of her life. Perhaps you can tell, it was so very difficult for me.

Anyone who has put a dog or cat to sleep knows about the pain to which I refer. Plus, I'm a very emotional dude on this stuff so it was rough.

10 days later I helped my ex-girlfriend with her dog that was not even 2 years old. He had to be euthanized and I was there to help her be with him and get through it, if that's even possible.

I was emotionally raw as you can imagine.

So no more death of pets for awhile please, but this is a story of a new beginning.

When I was filling in for Steve Edwards on GDLA just 2 weeks later, a cat was brought on the show whose owner had died and the cat was found malnourished and close to death.

I guess I should say here that I feel in general cats are sort of neglected and live in the shadow of dogs. I truly love cats and dogs equally, but I just sorta' feel that cats (because the cannot run and catch a frisbee for you) have a rougher ride.

Anyway, my heart broke for this poor thing, although I should also say that my heart breaks on Thompson's Tails every week for the mostly dogs that we have on. I have come close to adopting dogs so many times from our show but my cat to whom I referred has always been sick and I felt that it would have been unfair. I'm sure that there is a dog in my future soon.

Anyway, this cat is now being fostered in my home and it's an adventure trying to get her used to the new environment and me, oh, and the other surviving cat who smells her through the door and is NOT happy.

I'll keep you posted... I hope I won't be one of those guys found face down in his home with 300 cats crawling all over....but would like to think I am an animal lover trying to do a good thing one animal at a time...

AWW Mark good for you .
Not a cat person either but times in your life come about and I just can't walk a dog any more,
Barely can take care of this crazed feline though the whole litter was brought to me at 3 weeks old feeding with bottles we got hooked on 2 of them !!
Oscar and Felix the Odd couple for sure!!
all the rest we adopted out very hard too.
Only 2 yrs old and we had to put Felix down have had so many dogs too a 15 yr old lab Topaz. She was the best. YEAH I no that raw feeling Mark !!
Oscar is in that picture he is 4 now still looks for Felix my favorite but being human I have grown to love Oscar too!
I swear if he was human he would be smoking a cigar and throwing it on the ground he does ware his name well!! But, I do miss Felix so much too!!!
Thank you Mr.Mark Thompson Keep smiling :) You have a big heart to take in another animal no matter what Dog or Cat all is great. Brenda

well in my life i have lost like 10+ cat's and 4 dogs, and a horse, and 1/2 a dozen chickens. i'm not much of a pet person either. mostly my sisters/dad are the ones bring home these pets. but everytime one of them dies, it hit's me pretty hard. i just think watching a cute lil animal suffer is horrible. so it always brings me to tears. so i'm sure everyone understands what your feeling mark. i'm glad that you got a new pet. take care of the new kitty, and treat her well mark. make that cat feel like it just had a 2nd chance in life. by the way if your wondering about my pet's names here is the list of names.
cat's: kitty, pouchie, calico, kelly, sebastian, toby, vampiro, tommy, d.q., christian, princess, kitty version 2.

as for dog's: tejano, beauty, mocha, bruno, and my horse esmeralda.

Tough one my friend. I love dogs and cats both and find almost all extremely friendly towards me, so I bond with animals exceptionally well, and I can only tell you its never easy. The only thing that heals this is a new visitor to the home to become a new family member and of course lotsa time too. Over time you will remember them and their spirits will be aside you, watching and listening, subtly guiding you in the right directions.

Mark you are a good man.
I do feel your heart break over having to put your cat down. I too had to do that a couple months ago. It's so hard to make the final call but it is more humane to save them from suffering. It does however break your heart. I am a cat lover but I do like dogs also. I just prefer cats. At one time I had 7. Out of the 7 only one was by my choosing and the other 6 were abandoned kittens or cats. Currently I have only 4 remaining cats left out of the 7. Illnesses forced me to euphemize them. I hope you find closure to your loss and maybe a new pet that needs your love just as much.

To all who read this PLEASE SPAY OR NUETER YOUR PET

Hi Mark I don't know whats up with nosy4 but back on subject. We had to say goodbye to our little girl Lily last month she was 5 and stated suffering seizures which left her blind and unable to walk. We adopted her from a friend that rescued her and her brothers and sisters who were left in a box on a San Pedro street corner, she gave us five years of love and dedication.Saying goodbye is the hardest thing a mommy and daddy can do,but its the love that allows us to do it and get through it.God bless you Mark keep up your wonderful work to find homes for our 4 legged friends.

MARK...... CATS GET IN TOUCH, SOMEHOW, WITH YOUR SOUL. I RESCUED ONE FROM A GOLF COURSE BACK IN THE EARLY 70S. SHE WAS ABOUT 3 OR 4 YRS. AT THE TIME. WE HAD HER SPAYED AND SHE ALLOWED US TO LIVE WITH HER UNTIL SHE WAS 16 YEARS. HER NAME WAS KIKI-MINOU UNTIL HER BEAUTIFUL LONG HAIRED PERSIAN COAT CAME BACK TO LIFE, AND THEN SHE BECAME FLUFFY.

BEFORE SHE PASSED AWAY WE BROUGHT A 4 WEEK OLD TORTOISHELL FEMALE KITTEN INTO THE HOME TOO. WHAT PRECIOUS PICTURES WE HAVE OF OLD AND NEW GETTING TO KNOW, AND YES FINALLY LOVE, EACH OTHER. WE NAMED THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK MINOU. MINOU HAS GROWN.....NOW 16 YEARS OLD....INTO AN "EVIL TORTI CAT"....THIS TERM USED IN THE MOST LOVING OF WAYS. SHE RULES !!! WE ADORE HER WHEN SHE ALLOWS IT.... AND EVEN WHEN SHE DOESN'T.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR NEW .....I ALMOST HATE TO SAY IT, BUT SHE WILL RULE!..... MISTRESS!!!

Any guy who has a cat (and the kitty loves them back) is very special. I have always had to have a cat in my life. Love dogs too, but a cat somehow knows everthing (like if you are sick or sad) and they're spooky spititual, like when they look above you at ?angels, aliens? what do the see...? I have 2 tragic stories, and 2 wonderful kittys I dream about. Spay/neuter and KEEP THEM INSIDE, THEY ARE PREY - cars and coyotes alike. Love you Mark! p.s. I'm a weather freak, our secret

My heart goes out to you, Mark! I'm a real sucker for cats, dogs and kids! In fact, I still miss my family Pomeranian dog and she passed on years back from pretty much just old age. I still have a picture of her with me sitting on the ground with Pom on my lap, resting after her walking me (not the other way around... Pom was, ummm... quite the bundle of energy there! LOL!!!) My husband took a picture of me sitting on the ground with Pom on my lap. It's on his home office desk and it's his favorite picture of me b/c you can see the big beaming smile coming out of me. I just couldn't have another pet since then, b/c I know exactly what you were going thru and I just couldn't bear going thru that again. (I'll see if I could get that picture up on my blog. It's on photo paper and I don't have easy access to a scanner.)

Know that Lupe is now in a much happier place free from the physical pain that she was going thru. And I commend you also for 1) supporting your ex-gf thru her own dog's death and 2) giving a foster home to a new cat...I just couldn't do it myself, for reasons stated above. I'm sure given time that the surviving cat will get along with the new foster cat. You have plenty of love to share with both of those cats.

Do you even know how many time I said "Aww" while reading this? Mark, you are such a sweet guy!

Have you heard of an organization called Pet Pride? I've done a bit of volunteer work for them. They take in stray or otherwise homeless or unwanted cats. They have a policy where unlike other animal shelters they do not euthanize unless it is medically necessary. If you'd rather not be the 300 cat guy then perhaps you can send about 299 of them there.

A big hug and a lick to comfort you from Boo Boo & Shayna. Wishing you and your new foster many happy days to come. For anyone who has ever lost a pet you may find this poem of comfort:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Yvette, I am crying now and know I have many hairy friends waiting for me when my time comes. Nosy4, this is the stuff that Jillian would know what to do. I think you should go to a vet, see if their compasion will give you some solutions, if not go to the next vet, and the next, and the next. If you want to save her and she has a chance the Pet God (?) will find a way. You obviously have been chosen to take care of this creature you can't give up. Keep us posted.

Go to Pet Orphans in Van Nuys.... their website is petorphans.org They are the peeps who bring in pets for Thompson's Tails. That, or try the vet idea suggested by OClee. Please let us know what's happening.

Hey Mark, I put a message on my blog for Nosy4 about help for her dog. We are both on her favorites list, so maybe she'll get on our blogs and get the info. I posted it under weather, but you guys are kinda strict with who gets on the community page. You can get access to her e-mail, I'm sure. Hey did you check out the meteor shower the other night?
