Look, I'm sure it's tough to produce a halftime show for the Super Bowl, but Tom Petty?? Come on.

First, I have to tell how much I love Tom Petty's stuff.  I have his multi-CD set that has all his studio cuts that didn't make the album and off album cuts, etc.  In fact, Tom Petty is among the only artists whose albums I will buy without hearing one note on the radio or elsewhere.  I think he's terrific.

So when I say Tom Petty was a bad choice for the halftime show it is NOT because I don't like him, it's because it's bad producing for the audience at large.  He doesn't bring the kind of performance and contemporary sensibility that the Super Bowl should want....unless you perhaps pair him or have him joined on stage by a collection of all stars of his vintage and stature in an all star jam.

Failing that, it is a bad choice.

It's odd because it's not as though they don't know what they are doing.  Prince was unreal last year.  He nailed one of the most electrifying performances I've seen at a Super Bowl show and in a driving rain.

Yes, they were turned down by a bunch of people and a bunch more were unavailable.... Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, etc.

But wait...on the pre-game show Alicia Keys was performing...WHY NOT SWITCH THOSE BOOKINGS???!!

It should have been Tom Petty on the pre-game and Alicia Keys on the Super Bowl (she has a song that's charting right now!!!  And she can crank it)

Or how about the Black Eyed Peas perhaps if you don't care if a group has a current song.  They will bring it in performance and have some real great party songs.

Nope, they blew it and because the ratings were so good and the captive audience had no choice, they will never know how poor their decision was.   This blog will fall in the rock and roll forest and never be heard :)

And again, I love you Tom Petty..I'd love to see your show at the Greek Theater maybe but not as the Super Bowl halftime show.

how about like the regular season they have a marching band that nobody cares about half time is 15 minutes and we play the damn game..when did the super bowl start to become the Oscars?fashion shows, parties, and celebrity spotting and what they are wearing??its a football game its for men it was their day and now the media is emasculating one of the last things we have . who gives a damn about commercials that's when we get up to get another beer or get rid of the one we just pounded down.we don't want to see human interest stories just stats and highlights of the season..so we know who to bet on ..and the next day report about the game not who was there not about parties not about celebrities not about half time so we can either feel good or pissed all over again..give us the game and our testicles back..

Yeah, craftyguy! Who needs "human interest stories." I think watching a bunch of guys slugging beer and eating all sorts of BLEEP while driven by testerone is a "human interest story" on its own! :-P :-P :-P (Sorry! Couldn't resist...)

What an upset!!! Someone out there is making A LOT of money off the Giant's win...

Cheers,
J - who was NOT watching the game but was out working out at the gym and then shopping at Trader Joe's and dinner at a Japanese restaurant. ALL of those places had TV sets on to the game!!! (So much for NOT watching the game, huh? *rolleyes* )

Tom Petty was awesome! Much better than people dancing to pre-recorded music they ripped off from classic rock bands.

Aww man, I'm surprised to see such bad reviews! My family and I (with the exception of the youngest one) absolutely loved his performance with the Heart Breakers. I hadn't seen him in years, nor have I heard any of his stuff on the radio (you'd think they'd at least play him on KISS or MY FM), so I was happy to hear some throwbacks. They all looked like they've been taking care of themselves... Tom's hair was on POINT! lol

I thought Tom sounded good too...but Van Halen would have been the wisest choice. They're on tour and probably would have ripped it up.

i don't know about you guys, but i can't imagine die hard foot ball fans or foot ball players getting pumped up or wanting to hear janet jackson, or gwen play during half time. i would think real fans, and the players perfer something that's gonna get them pumped and get their adrenaline rolling with some music that has balls to it like ac/dc, motley crue, dr. dre, jet, metallica, or you know something that's gonna get people pumped.

i think the super bowl has been way too watered down. its not about the game anymore, it's about the commercials, and the sissy 1/2 time show that are only important for the bandwagon fans, that know nothing or very lil about football. atleast WWE pick's good performers for their Wrestlemania event. Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, and Motorhead performed, and it made sense. i'm not a fan of those bands, but i atleast understood why they would pick them. because most wrestling fans enjoy them, and the music suite the event.

i don't have a problem with tom petty, i perfer him then others, but again, lacking balls, but it's better then janet. so whatever. i just feel like men should take back their event, and man it up like the way it was back in the day.

Mark,

This incident reminds me of one I heard of several years ago at the Sturges motorcycle meet. I remember that the event promoters kept secret who was going to perform for the crowd. Now you know that bikers want some good old time rock and roll for the most part, right? Right! But when it came to show time, who was on stage performing? ELTON JOHN! Now talk about a furious crowd...maybe rabid is a better word for it? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!!!?

Mark, do you remember that episode in the news some years ago? And was it Bob Donley who covered that event?
