Obituary of the late Mr Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
Why the early bird gets the worm;
Life isn't always fair;
and Maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 -year- old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Tylenol, sun lotion or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

It is sad that common sense has not only left the building, but may have died. I am not going to give up though. I believe some people do still have common sense. Although rare.

Why do parents let children rule? Why do parents have teachers reprimanded because the parent failed to do their job?

When my daughter was a senior, I received a call from her History teacher, she was not in class. She was in the library working with a classmate on the schools blood drive. The teacher totally expected me to dismiss it and was shocked when I told her I would reprimand her for missing class without permission, she wasn't where she was supposed to be.
Having consequences for your actions builds character. She graduated 2nd in her class, attends USF and works in the student government travel division as an assistant comptroller. When the student body president did not show up for a conference but submitted his travel expenses what she said was, he wasn't where he was supposed to be. Common sense ruled. Let's not give up all hope that it is dead.

That is so true!! So true!! And very sad!! However, like Michelled, I'm not going to give up hope. We still teach our children to do the right thing, take responsibility etc. I keep in touch with my four daughters' teachers all the time. In fact, just emailed a few this morning and they thanked me for checking in and supporting them. My daughter, who is in high school just told me that she turned someone in this week for stealing and is now eligible for a cash reward. Some of the other students made fun of her and called her a tattletale. She stood up for herself and told them that they would want her to turn the person in if it was their stuff that was stolen. I told her how proud I was of her.

I say we keep trying! There are a lot of parents that don't parent their children and the children pay the price. However, there are still some good eggs out there.

Example: My daughter called me from school this morning to tell me that there were rumors of guns on campus and a shooting that was to take place (NOTE: So far this has been only a rumor and no weapons have been found, so I don't want to be accused of spreading a lie). However, I tried calling the school and couldn't get through. So I went and picked her up. Apparently I wasn't the only concerned parent. There were tons of parents there picking up their children. I would much rather be safe than sorry. Anyway, my daughter told me that the students weren't looking out for number one. They were all making sure their friends were calling parents to come get them, offering each other rides home etc.

Best post I've seen on here for quite a while..
One can only hope that there might be something to reincarnation after all...ONLY time will tell.

ONLY the twins," Had enough of this" and " Not gonna take it anymore" are gonna pull it all back together...

Faith and Hope, without it we are doomed. I can not change the world, but I've done my best at ensuring I did not add to it's demise. Where is FF for the Kumbayay....heck I can't even spell it.

Excellent post. It's time to recall "Mrs. Stop and Think" and "Mr. Do the Right Thing Always". And little cousins "Pay Attention" and "Never Tell a Lie."
Let's expel the bullies, "Impulsive Behavior", "It wasn't Me" and "The Other Dude Did It."
Plain simple Common Sense is the easiest thing possible. Otherwise life becomes very complicated.

To paraphrase President Abraham Lincoln: "Common sense isn't all that common." In his typical economy of words that strike like a thunderbolt, Mr. Lincoln's statement stands as valid today as it did in his own time. Far more than "dry humor," these words were prophetic because they describe conditions that prevail today.

Since the 1950's, self appointed intellectual "Fops" with far too much idle time began the systematic disbanding of "time honored" values. The only professional field open to their ravings was that of Education. From that fertile "Field" (it comes as no surprise) that "Common Sense" emerged the fatality. Gone today is the adherence to a disciplined, organized, logical thought process. That has been replaced by abstract theoretical postulations based on nothing more than individual's supposition. May we have a moment of silence for the late, great "Mr. Common Sense."
