Yesterday the Florida legislature passed a measure that would allow most Florida residents to take guns to work. Naturally, they must have a permit to carry the weapon, but it will allow workers to keep guns in their cars for self-protection. Thus, businesses will be prohibited from banning guns kept in locked cars on their private property. And it will apply to not just employees but customers and invited guests to businesses.

Boca Raton Democrat Ted Deutch had this to say about the bill, "This is an attempt to trample upon the property rights of property owners and attempt to make it more difficult to protect the workers in a workplace and those who visit our retail establishments."

What dog squeeze. Look ... these workers have to leave the safety of their employer's parking lot and head home .. then drive back in the morning. On the way to or from work they might have to go into areas that are not, shall we say, exactly safe. They're entitled to defend and protect themselves from predators. I'm sorry, but the individual right to self defense trumps private property rights.

It seems like a good law to me. But it seems like little more than window dressing.

First, if you've got a concealed carry permit (I do not), what is preventing you from carrying said weapon on your person in a concealed fashion AT YOUR DESK???

I mean, unless your employer requires you to walk through a metal detector when you come in the door, why would you NOT pack heat at work. For crying out loud, it's CONCEALED. That is what "CONCEALED" means. Unless you get stupid with it, no one is going to know that you have it.

Furthermore, what good is a gun going to do you locked up in your car? Yes, it will help if someone tries to rob you on your way to or from work. But, again, if it's locked in your glove compartment, what does it matter WHAT your employer's policy is? Is your employer going to search your car?

Someone educate me, please.

FF, yes employers can search your car. Weyerheuser did that to employees in Oklahoma and they were fired. They just went out on the company parking lot and got the police to start opening up cars to be searched for drugs and the guns showed up and were against policy. They were fired. They sued but lost the lawsuit in court. Yes, concealed weapons are concealed and their is NO NEED to let anyone know you have one on you. But I work in a Government building and I could never take mine in. I do keep one in my car which is my right already under the concealed weapons law. BTW, I had a drunk/druggie show up on my porch hollering at me through the door that he was out of gas in my driveway and needed me to take him to the store. I have a glass front door (hate it) I said no and told him to leave. He didn't until I displayed my firearm and he went on his merry way. I called Hubby. He was just getting off duty. Hubby said you have your handgun? I said yes, and the shotgun is here by my side too. Hubby said, Ok, then I won't worry and will take my time getting home. It is not a false sense of security. It works.
