It's tough to not want to watch the news when you do the news.... yet I understand and often sympathize with people out on the street when I ask them what news they watch and they say  " I don't.... it's depressing, it's scary''.  I hear ya. it is, but ,  sometimes it's uplifting too and even fun and ecuational,  but you gotta watch closely to get that.   Just this morning while getting ready for work i've got Good Day LA on and I see Suzanne Marques w/ the shooting of a man on the 101 freeway in the Valley, .. Sherman Oaks!!! Wow.. even white people might start getting scared at this point..... What ? oh .. a relief in this his death might be an unfortunate and bizarre suicide in an apparent reaction to his girlfriends suicide the day before. .. then Bob De Castro's in Glendale w/ a police gun battle there... in Santa Ana a man and an off duty cop apparently exchange gunfire.... This isn't even the ''gang'' violence that we've become almost numb too while proclaiming outrage.  So... as Gigi wrote in another post.. things seem crazy lately..crazier than usual. Is it because we're in such a big area that there's always something violent and bad going on ? Would we have this in Bar Harbor Maine? Probably not... but that's small consolation. This is our home, where we're raising our kids,  and when it's a disaster zone, we don't like it....but do we do anything about it ? Volunteer ? TEach ? Mentor ? Join the Neighborhood Council ? Write a letter ?  Who are are heroes that will help once and for all to get rid of the guns and the gangs and the crime and restore the pride we should feel in living in one of the most beautiful and diverse places in the world?   Maybe it's easier just to fight traffic alone in your car... get home, and lock the door.

I rarely watch local news but I was have been watching fox 11 LA a little since, well... I blog with you guys and in St Louis the reporters who blog rarely interacted with the bloggers like many of you do here.

Los Angeles is the only place I've lived where I've seen bullets ricochet of the street not five feet from me... I was almost mugged by teenagers who decided I was too big to tussle with I guess (6'6" tall at 250lbs)... I've had guns pulled on me twice and been attacked by gangs twice and lived to tell about it without any injury to myself. I've had at least two people I can remember experience being in the middle of drive by shootings. These things only happend in my life while living in Los Angeles.

So I guess that may be the sub conscious reason I rarely watch the local news. But Leelila and Nicshelle have me tuning in from time to time now.

Dress warm if you go to Pennsylvania Phil.

Center For Immigration Studies

WASHINGTON (March 31, 2007) –A new poll using neutral language finds that primary and caucus voters have little knowledge of candidates’ immigration positions. The results also show that voters often do not share their candidate’s position.

Among the findings:

* Only 34 percent of McCain voters, 42 percent of Clinton voters, and 52 percent of Obama voters correctly identified their candidate as favoring eventual citizenship for illegal immigrants who meet certain requirements.

* Of McCain voters, 35 percent mistakenly thought he favored enforcement that would cause illegals to return home, another 10 percent thought he wanted mass deportations, and 21 percent didn’t know his position.

* Voters often held different positions from the candidate they supported. Only 31 percent of McCain voters had the same immigration position as he does. For Clinton voters, 45 percent shared her position; 61 percent of Obama voters shared his position.

* This lack of knowledge, coupled with disagreements with their candidates’ positions, makes it very difficult to draw any conclusions about the fact that all three remaining candidates favor legalization for illegal immigrants.

DWP Rate Increases Approved

Last Edited: Wednesday, 02 Apr 2008, 1:49 PM PDT

A DWP rate hike would go towards fixing old pipes that could have prevented this explosion that killed one firefighter.

Los Angeles --
After months of debate, the Los Angeles City Council gave preliminary approval today to water and electricity rate increases proposed by the Department of Water and Power.

If the rate increases receive final council approval next week, residents can expect to pay on average an additional $7.25 a month for water and electricity in the city of Los Angeles by the summer of 2009. DWP bills its customers every other month.

"My first reaction is one of relief because it means that we'll be able to make the investments that we need," said DWP General Manager David Nahai. "Today's a good day for Los Angeles."

The council approved the power increase 11-0 and the water increase 9-2, with council members Dennis Zine and Janice Hahn dissenting.

"We know the power side is outdated," Zine said.

"I'm sure the water side has problems but to give a double-whammy to the people that are struggling to make ends meet, the people who are losing their homes, people who can't afford the rents, people who are now paying more to put food on the table -- to hit them with another increase, that troubles me."

The decision to increase rates came one week after a Los Angeles firefighter died in an explosion caused in part by a deteriorated DWP cable.

Environmental lobbies abhor all by-products of human existence, unless generated by illegal aliens. In that case, the vast latrine and landfill created along the border with Mexico, as millions of illegals defecate and despoil their way to their destinations in the U.S., are just dandy.

To interfere with the natural formation of this outsized outhouse is to "jeopardize the quality of life and beauty of South Texas." Or so implied the president of the National Audubon Society. He was protesting the decision, late in the day, of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to "expeditiously install additional physical barriers and roads at the border to deter illegal activity."

Chertoff, a Bush boy – and therefore a Johnny-come-lately to the idea of a border – has been under pressure from a few of the barrier's congressional backers. They worry that environmental restrictions would postpone construction indefinitely. Quick on the trigger, the Sierra Club bleated that the Bush administration was threatening "endangered species and fragile ecosystems along the Rio Grande."

That the human inhabitants along the border are the worse for wear has never mattered much. Drug-trade related turf wars between gangs, brazen assaults on border patrolmen by invaders (often aided by American officials) and kidnappings – these are considered eco-friendly.

This is a picture of me at the DEA firing range near Castaic. It's an automatic weapon...what agents use when things get serious. I'm not a 'gun person 'but it was a fun and different day for a story on the DEA 's Citizens Academy..." I "killed" a guy who pulled a gun..oops.. a cell phone out of his waistband when I was serving a 'search warrant..." Gives me more insight into cops challenges.... I'm a news reporter here at Fox 11.. been in LA since '83... aside from the traffic it's awesome.. why wouldn't you want to live here ? I have a great job.. the people here are fun... I get to do what we call ''long form'' stories, investigations, half hour specials.. we can really get into some serious issues here... ( no not Britney). Someday i hope to meet Jillian. Later.
