Controversy.... that's another word for '' offshore drilling'... The prez says we need to increase domestic oil production cause gas is like 9 dollars an ounce.   ... so now the argument begins again... should we sink new wells and explore like miles off shore which we'll never see,  and run the risk of an oil spill like the one in 1969... ( 30 years ago !  that's all you got for me ???)... well.. it's tough to argue against protecting the environment... and keeping beaches clean.. and fowl from becoming fouled... we're all for that.... on the other hand, should we do nothing and continue to help assorted  saudi princes buy more yachts and planes and countries ?   probably not... no easy answers... Opponents of any new energy source are formidable... case in point.. long beach's now aborted plans to build an in -port liquified natural gas terminal.   opponents raised the spector of a new terrorist target, of the risk to population, etc etc... and arguments that say, there were already enough oil tanks and other terrorist targets in the highly industrialized long beach port to create a major disaster  were not effective.  result.. no lng...
Any new oil drilling will require congressional approval and that  will no doubt be tied up in lawsuits if and when that permission is granted.. and i'll have great grand children by the time any oil flows off the coast of california.. or , more accurately, any new oil... oil is drilled off the coast every day, you can see the platforms off the 101 on the way up north..... an untold # of leases exist with existing permission to drill that have not yet been tapped. the prez hasn't discussed that aspect of the controversy..... and the question of 'what are they waiting for '' is an excellent and still unanswered one...... So..... folks on both sides are well meaning and make strong arguments.... but the betting here is that the ''no '' votes will ultimately triumph... in particular if barack is the new man in the white house.. that's a no brainer.  meantime, we continue to pay a small fortune for gas with no realistic alternative in the short term except not driving as much or at all.... or as far.. or as fast..... .. in covering this story about lifting the 27 yr old federal ban on offshore drilling, at a gas station today in santa barbara, it was instructive the the ''person on the street'  interviews in reaction to the prez's proposal yielded a ''yes'' from a woman who could only afford to put 25 dollars in her block long suv... and a ''no'' drill vote from a young man who was literally putting 2 gallons of gas in his small car.  so.. no easy answers.. if there were, any one could figure it out and we wouldnt be in this mess... meantime, while oil companies are making profits even larry flynt would consider obscene, as how long is that waiting list for the prius ? and figure out where you can pump up your bike tires....  later.

How come we never hear mention of the fact that, out of all those rigs Katrina clobbered, how many spills/eco-disasters where there?

Kudos to modern drilling technology!

One spill, over 30 years ago? Did anyone ever stop and think about the billions and billions of gallons of oil, gasoline and other chemicals that were spilled into our oceans during World War II? Tanker ships were being sunk on a daily basis for years. Was there a huge environmental disaster? Did the white cliffs of dover or the white sand beaches of Honolulu turn black? No. I say start the drills NOW! The Earth is a hell of a lot tougher than we puny humans give it credit for.

It has to be done...unless you're a Democrat of course. I love how they're against offshore drilling, and exploring nuclear options, but don't provide alternative answers.

If we would have drilled Anwar 10 years ago or drilled in areas like near PanamaCity Florida called the largest natural gas field in the world STOPPED by CLinton, Gore, and loon environmentalists, we might be independent right now. All have failed us since we thought we got a wake up call with Jimmy Carter gas lines.

Nothing like looking forward.

I would fast track and destroy the environ rules (like McCain) that make too many loops to do any Nukes, Drilling or refinerys.

At the same time I would announce a Moon Project for a non gas engine. In attrition, we wouldnt see gas engines in 10 years.

The longer we sit on our hands and don't start drilling the coasts or wait for some miracle motor than runs on used vegetable oil or something as exotic and fanciful, the longer we will continue to pay for foreign oil at the mercy of Arab Sheiks. If we developed an engine that ran on smiles and happy thoughts this afternoon, and the oil companies didn't buy off the patent, what would we do tomorrow? Swap out all the billions of gasoline motors for this new type of powerplant? Totally impractical. Don't waste another minute. Start the drills TODAY!

Eco-terrorists are like the gardner who wouldn't plant a tree, because it would take too long to grow. Drill early, drill often, drill now!

It's funny how the left is always clamoring for recognition that the war in Iraq was for oil. Of course the real answer is that it was for national economic and domestic security, which means having a viable supply of fuel. What I want to know is since demand is down, and supplies are stable, then why is the price of oil future so high? You may want to read up on Bunker Hunt's attempt to corner the silver market and then ask who would want to destabilize the American economy for perhaps political gain? I think the FTC should look very closely at Geo. Soros.

From another of my posts.Things you cannot do to produce energy:
Nuclear energy
Hydroelectric energy
Coal based energy (our most abundant source)
This leave us with natural gas and oil-both increasingly expensive alternatives. As for the solar option, the most successful solar supported program is 10,000 homes in Germany requiring 370 acres of surface exposure. Look at LA, think of the number of houses and figure out how many thousands of acres that would require. It ain't gonna happen. Greenies are trying to force us into technology that isn't ready for prime time yet.

A little light reading before the Republican Convention in Minneapolis - St Paul... say what you will about John and Barack... they both have fascinating though dramatically different life stories...and are happy to share them . Going to big events like the conventions one of the best parts of being a news reporter here at Fox 11.. been in LA since '83... aside from the traffic it's awesome.. why wouldn't you want to live here ? I have a great job.. the people here are fun... I get to do what we call ''long form'' stories, investigations, half hour specials.. we can really get into some serious issues here... ( no not Britney). Someday i hope to meet Jillian. Later.
