While the news focus has been on the lowest ice extent since satellite monitoring began in 1979 for the Arctic, the Southern Hemisphere (Antarctica) has quietly set a new record for most ice extent since 1979.

This can be seen on this graphic from this University of Illinois site The Cryosphere Today, which updated snow and ice extent for both hemispheres daily. The Southern Hemispheric areal coverage is the highest in the satellite record, just beating out 1995, 2001, 2005 and 2006. Since 1979, the trend has been up for the total Antarctic ice extent.

While the Antarctic Peninsula area has warmed in recent years and ice near it diminished during the Southern Hemisphere summer, the interior of Antarctica has been colder and ice elsewhere has been more extensive and longer lasting, which explains the increase in total extent. This dichotomy was shown in this World Climate Report blog posted recently with a similar tale told in this paper by Ohio State Researcher David Bromwich, who agreed “It’s hard to see a global warming signal from the mainland of Antarctica right now”.

Indeed, according the NASA GISS data, the South Pole winter (June/July/August) has cooled about 1 degree F since 1957 and the coldest year was 2004.

According to your post from

http://icecap.us/index.php/go/joes-blog/a_new_record_fo
r_antartic_total_ice_extent
this is from an organization called ICECAP.

ICECAP's List of EXPERTS include:
Robert C. Balling Jr. who
Conducted an ExxonMobil-funded study in 2002, with Craig Idso, entitled "The 2000 United States Historical Climate Network Update: What Changed?"

Their EXPERTS listed on their website belong to organizations that have received over $11.8million from ExxonMobil since 1998.

I guess this kind of thing will go on till something awful happens. Or doesn't.

I choose to go with the experts who are on MY payroll. Politicians need not apply.

Another gem. You're on a roll, Vitt. You should have your own show!

RandyLoo posted this link in another blog last week. Whether or not you like him, Schnitt (aka, MJ) is sharp and he calls it like it is. Which means, of course, that he's getting money from some evil corporation, right DEOP? I have barely scratched the surface but he's got a BLEEPload of links:

Yes, RandyLoo posted that on my thread "Global Warmimg" which you are well aware of since you made 3 responses, including the 1st response on the thread.
Since I had clearly written that "it is very unlikely that anytime soon someone will be proven 100% correct" as both sides argue with "scientific evidence", I thanked RandyLoo for that information.
And then after I posted "anyone not totally blinded by BS understands there is no absolute proof yet", you responded with "Sorry Al, and DEOP, the debate is FAR from over". Hilarious stuff.
And now if you want to live in a fantasy land where no one has motive even if they are handed millions of dollars, that is your right. Of course, that is there can't be any monetary motive as long as you agree with their message.

BOTH sides have Motives..ONE might recieve monies from a Private Source while the Other might be jockying for MILLIONS of Dollars in Grants and to SOME, even more importantly, SOME degree of scientific recognition..

We won't EVEN get into the Windfall that might result from being IN on the ground floor of an Emerging Gorebal Warming Industry..

In a way, it's kinda like the Y2K thing. Remember that? The company I worked for spent millions on re programing before the day of danger arrived. They avoided the devastation that hit most of the planet and ruined so many lives.

But.... we're speaking of Nature here. Not quite the same is it? One never knows, do one? Not for sure. Well, maybe.

"One never knows"
That's just it, no one can be sure no matter which side throws out their "scientific proof". So why do people blindly believe either side (or mock one side because they dislike the messenger) when all that shows is how easily they can be brainwashed?

One doesn't necessarilly HAVE to know the Complete truth of the matter in order to spot a charalatan pushing a Falsehood and trying to exploit the situation..

Indeed,,spotting falsehoods often actually becomes a prerequisite in the SEARCH for the complete truth..

If you can't DO the one,,you'll NEVER get to the other....

You should take your own advice on that Mockery thing...

I'll fall back on my religion analogy. The fanatics that espouse the whole global warming thing without PROOF are like those who claim to believe in God "just in case". If I believe in God, I'm covered in case He really does exist.

You know what it's called? It's called BLIND FAITH!
