Filling up my car today I see we’re creeping ever closer to the $4 a gallon mark.

Can you bleeping believe it?

When did we first realize in this country that we were too dependent on foreign oil? Let me see… how about during the flipping Carter administration!

Sure, we had a little spasm of gas shortage panic back then – bought a few compact cars for a while (remember the Pinto?) – but then it was back to the good old gas guzzlers.

So our leaders – Democrat and Republican alike – have basically had 30 years to come up with a reasonable alternative energy source.

Have they done it? No

Meanwhile, the economy is in the toilet and runaway gas prices are spurring inflation levels we haven’t seen in decades.

Way to go guys! Mission accomplished!

You got it. The rich get richer at our expense. They could have come up with alternate fuels and propulsion methods long ago.

Try this: Invent something that enables a hummer to get 50 MPG. You will be contacted and offered a few million bucks to keep your mouth shut. Fantasy? No way. I know someone who did just that!

Supply and demand still reigns supreme as the greatest single factor determining the prices of any commodity on the markets. Still, there is no excuse whatever for our government failure to support research and development of alternative fuels.

Germany was using methane as an alternative to petroleum with a measure of success during W.W. II. This "brakthrough" was never developed afterwards by any of the victorious allied nations. The fossil fuels monopoly appears to be a world-wide cartel.

I respect your idea but you are way off! Democrats and Republicans and any other party are not the ones that need to come up with anything! Industry has to do that! Politicians are NOT scientists and engineers. Short of industry, it means some clever little guy out there(you and me) needs to find something, and not sell out for a quick buck! Politicians can only back one of the many suggestions already out there. Hydrogen seems to be the front runner but unless you tell them you want it, they wont get behind anything YET.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the check that Vittorio's friend accepted had the signature of George W Bush, or Cheney.
