Spring is in full swing, temperatures are nice and mild..flowers are blooming...perfect conditions for a hike! With surfing and running, hiking is another one of my favorite outlets. There are so many amazing trails right here in our backyard. The Santa Monica Mountains are loaded with all kinds of great hiking areas with various levels of difficulty. You can hike from the beach up to some of the mountain's highest peaks. Calabasas Peak (2163’) off of Stunt Road and Mulholland Drive is a great hike with awesome views. You can see the ocean and the valley from the trail. Much of the Santa Monica Mountains has been reserved for our pleasure. You have to take advantage of it! A short drive will get you out of the West L.A. or 818 gridlock and into the wilderness. Point Mugu State Park on the west end of the mountains is beautiful. I recently hiked through Malibu Creek State Park. WOW! It was my first time through the area. I’ve included a few pictures.

I'll take this view over the 405 any day..

**This is an old weather station..HAD to take a shot of it!

Yes..this is just a few miles from the city..

We pass over these trails on a regular basis up in SkyFox when we are flying in and out of Van Nuys Airport each morning. The mountains look great from 3000’ but you can’t beat being on the ground trudging through the trails. So make plans for a hike this spring..it’s the perfect time and I guarantee it will be therapeutic. The sea breeze and marine layer keep the temperature nice and mild this time of year. Robert Stone’s “Day Hikes Around Los Angeles” details ALL of the trails in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. It’s in my library and is my bible for hiking in SOCAL. It gives comprehensive driving directions to the trailheads and summarizes the various hikes. Go out and enjoy! I’ll see ya on the trail-Rick

Here's a great like to info on the Santa Monica Mountains:

Ogf course, what a nice hike be without first having a glazed twist and hot cup of French Roast coffee in the morning, then a few cans of Red Bull from Mama's donuts?

Oh Rick, you forgot to mention visitors along the trails so let me help you out. Cougars, Bobcats, Rattlesnakes (lots of those), packs of Coyotes, Chiggers, Ticks (with Lyme disease), Mosquitos (these actually carry West Nile), Scorpions (aka. Stinging Lizards). Say hello to all of those friends along the trail. You might want to bring them a large box of Mama's donuts so they don't have you for brunch! Cheers and good luck!

Rick,
I love your photos. You have an eye for good picture taking. Speaking of your pictures... I really like the photo you use as your avatar. You are in your own natural element at the beach and you have a sincere look of happiness... aside from being really handsome!
Thanks for sharing a great idea for a nice family outing...
Rick, Please tell your wife Happy Mothers Day, from your fellow GDLA bloggers.

Sebar,
You seem to think it would be better to stay at home where you feel safe... however, the rest of us will enjoy the beauty of the world, while being respectful and careful of the other species that we share this planet with.
Have a great weekend!

Rick...awesome pictures guy!

One thing to remember, when hiking, make sure you have insect repellent on, and have a first aid kit for the possibility of a snakebite. If you're hiking with several people, stay around 5 feet apart, so that the snakes can escape into where they feel safe, or so that you don't get bitten, should they try to suddenly come out of hiding. The 5 foot rule can prevent one from getting bitten. Always think safety first!

Good advise mystere! Thanks!

ERIN! Good deal...It is a great hike..so glad to hear you hit that trail too!

Thanks Shans-Deb..the weather station is an older, maual station..the one pictured is abandoned. The white box that looks like a bird house is an instrument shelter used to house thermometers...use to have one just like in my backyard! Everything is automated and cable free now..Thanks for the note!

Sebar-Yes..the wildlife makes things even more interesting...Also..if you eat donuts..you attract the snakes..so hold off if yo are heading to the hills :)

Thanks for the little education on the "old weather station"... I find stuff like that interesting. I have wondered what those "weather station" things were, when I saw them in the past. If they are abandoned, like this weather station, do they remove the thermometers? (enviromentally I would think that getting the mercury thermometers out of there before they break would be a good idea.)

My son is currently attending your old Alma Madder… San Jose State; do you have any hot tips for him on where to get good food and inexpensive entertainment?

Uh Rick thanks for the heads up. I have been needing a new set of Rattlesnake boots to go with my Stetson's. I'll make sure I bring a box of 24 donuts with me.

Hey Rick, Just wanted to say thanks for sharing the photos to go along with some of the posts.... Since I'm out here in Ohio its always cool to see some of the stuff off the beaten path and catch what you are up to out there.

I didn't know where else to comment on this either...

But I caught the Thursday morning webcast, where you were covering the painters truck that went off the exit ramp. On a story like that, do you guys at some point do a follow up, later in the day or ? .... Just curious how he is doing or if he even made it.

I was just thinking Thank God, that you Guys heard the report on the scanner and that ya checked it out.... Everyone once in awhile you here stories of people going missing... and they don't find there vehicles for days or weeks later, that crashed in an area that just
wasn't visible from street level.

I had a feeling if you guys weren't there, the tow trucks might have just drove on and figured there wasn't anything to the call..

I guess that story didn't unfold the way you really wanted it to be seen by the viewers...

And seeing how long it took to get Ems and CHP out there, really shows, why its so important if you see an accident, make the call for help, but in such a severe incident... stay at the scene to flag the EMS or Police in... Obviously you may not want approach the vehicle, but at least stay long enough to flag the help down...

As always, its fun to fly along with ya when I get a chance.
