With gas prices as high as they have been, more and more people are opting to go with two-wheelers to get from point a to point b. This mode of transportation can save commuters hundreds of dollars over a month. I drive about 65 miles round trip each day and am going through over $400 a month in gas. AHH..it hurts so bad! We are seeing many more motorcycles on the roads and freeways from up in SkyFox than ever before. Unfortunately, with more bikes, there have been MANY more accidents involving them. CHP reports a dramatic increase in bike crashes over the last several months. It seems like I have been covering FATAL motorcycle accidents about once a week and a wreck involving riders just about every day. The causes of these crashes are various. Perhaps some are new riders and just not that experienced. Automobile drivers may not be watching as closely for them as well. Lane sharing (or splitting lanes) by motorcycle riders IS legal in California, so be careful. The bottom line, there are still MANY MORE unsafe automobile drivers on the road speeding, lane changing and texting than motorcycle riders. Chime in and let me know your thoughts. Are you seeing more bikes? Do you ride a motorcycle or have you switched over to one recently? Let me know what you think! Be careful on the roads everyone. The worst part of my job is covering  tragic accidents that could have been avoided. Have a wonderful and safe weekend- Rick

You would find that bike tires are like donuts, of course so are car tires. Now if you had a nice fix of Mama's donuts and hot French Cafe coffee in the morning, you would get by without any issues at all. Some to consider. With the glazed donut you get instant energy, with a twist you can get from point "A" to point "B" much faster since glazed twists go in a straight line. With a Bear Claw and cinnamon, you have both muscle and beauty in a donut, and if you find you are driving in a stick situation, you must be eating a powdered lemon jelly.

The key my friend is on a cold morning at 5AM or even earlier, pop over to that little place and get juiced up to take on the day and after work, go and kick back in the shop and relax...you've earned it ;)

hey rick, glad you bring this topic to our FoxLA board. i've no experience on a motorbike other than piloting a honda trail 70 in 1974. last year i went to four dealerships because jillian did something which made me want to understand the motorcyle market. at that moment i had no place to park a motorcycle. (i have experienced what the lowest classes experience). suddenly one day i realized it was too cold, i have no place to which i need to travel, and i will get fycked if i collide witha a car. the game was over in an instant. i no longer wanted to look at motorbikes. i have no negative feelings about jillian's husband. yet, i am cognitive of the dangerous roads. i will not ride a motorbike.

Immigration status to be checked
Gwinnett officials this week began checking the immigration status of people applying for an occupation tax certificate, which is commonly referred to as a business license. -- The standard puts the county in compliance with a state law passed in 2006. -- "I'm elated," said D.A. I've been riding 365 days a year, rain or shine for the past two years. I have seen an increase over the past year in the number of riders. I've also found an increasing number of inexperienced and STUPID riders. If a motorcycle rider gets on the road with the attitude that he or she will do everything in their power to come home safe and sound, this increase in bike accidents would not be going up. It involves everyone (car and bike) to ensure that riders AND car drivers come home safe. Keep your distance! When you lane share, DON'T STAY ALONG SIDE A CAR! If you are driving a car, TURN YOUR F***KING HEAD! This applies to you motorcycle riders as well. When learning to ride, you must humble yourself and only rider within your skill level. DON'T SHOW OFF! I'm not impressed by your stupidity.

Riding a bike everyday is my therapy. If you ride regulary, you know what I mean.

I highly recommend all riders (new and old) take an Motorcycle Safey Foundation (MSF) course. It is WELL worth the time and money.

We are lucky to live in an area of the country that we are able to rider everyday, unless you have a problem with getting a little wet. ;-)

Stay safe people and enjoy the day.

Hey Rick! I am a motorcycle commuter. I bought my bike 2 1/2 years ago when the price of gas jumped up. I was commuting from Rialto to Brea and it was costing me upwards of $800/month to keep gas in my truck. The cost of financing a motorcyclce plus insurance and gas was negligible. Basically, the monthly cost of riding was about the same as what I spent in 1 week driving my truck.

As a person who has ridden, off and on, for over 20 years, this is what I see as the problems regarding the increase in motorcycle riders.

1. Inexperience - too many "young" ridiers are jumping on bikes who don't know what they're doing. Also, the state should require that all riders take a motorcycle safety course before they are allowed to ride. It amazes me that we have to take drivers ed. and in-car training yet all we have to do is take a written test and drive around a few cones for the motorcycle endorsement.

2. Too many "clueless" automobile drivers. I see way too many dirvers who are still paying more attention to their cigarettes or even STILL talking on their cell phones (with their phones up to their ears).

3. Just plain bad/inconsiderate driving. It seems to me that more and more people need a refresher course on courtious driving as well as basic driving laws. I can't tell you how many times I have had an auto jump from one lane to another without signalling or without waiting the requisite 5 seconds before they change lanes after signalling.

Thanks for posting this blog. It's nice to have an open forum to discuss these types of issues. BTW...what's with the DfDepor

Hello Rick,
=)

When I was a kid, my parents had motorcycles. We used to go for long rides... it was good family time. So I understand the fun of being on a bike... however…

My husbands’ cousin used to work building custom bikes at West Coast Choppers and at V-Twin Cities... He was a very safe, knowledgeable rider, and was killed on his way to work on his bike. It was a freak accident; he was in the fast lane on the 55... a man stealing a boat got on the freeway who had only set the hitch on the ball of the trailer... no chain, no latch, no bolt… the first bounce in the road and the boat came loose, it hit a car and ricocheted forward into our cousin. He passed away without ever knowing what had happened. Because of the hazard that those around you on the road can create... no one in the family rides bikes any more.
No matter how much gas a bike might save, a bike can't save your life in an accident. Stay safe.

P.S. Whenever I see a rider on the road... I say a little prayer, wishing for their safe journey.

Hey Rick
Being a new rider myself I choose not to ride
during peak hours computers are busy trying to get where they are going. I can say starting to ride a fifty and being a women as been one of the most uplifting expirences in life. I do believe we need to be more aware of motor cycles and scooters because there are more of them out there.

Yes, motorcycle riders, please be careful!
I'm an RN and have been working in the field more than 30 years.
I've taken care of many previous motorcycle riders who are now paralyzed from the neck down.

That is the entire rest of their lives.

Many other problems come with that condition, like large deep bedsores, pain, living in stench and so much more.

Be Careful!

Sorry if this appears twice, my first one I don't think is going to show...Anyway, I've been riding for about 11 years now. I no longer ride to commute to work, thankfully I do have that choice. People in their cars are just too distracted. I am happy more bikers are on the road, the increased visability does increase awareness. However I think so many new riders are also inexperiened and have never taken the MSF course...which I think would be great if EVERYONE (cagers & bikers) were required to take. Just so they were more aware. The cagers really need to pay more attention to their driving and less attention to their phone, ipod, newspaper, mascara, passenger, etc. then they are too the road. They need to LOOK before they start to change lanes, not mid lane change. Don't cut off a bike and turn in front of them. Cagers need to not have a fit if a bike is lane splitting. The bike moving up between will NOT slow up your commute unless you run them over. But you'll be slowed down for a car accident too. I've been on the road following my husband on his bike...he'll split thru a set of cars, I'll be coming thru behind him and inevitably someone will move closer to the other car so I can't fit thru. Rude, mean, petty... I've ridden bikes and in cars long enough to know thate jerks on both sides of the fence...no matter what side your on, be the bigger person and don't lower yourself. If your a new rider...PLEASE, consider it an investment in your life to take a MSF course.

Rick can always use a Mama's donut to fatten up, so if he takes a spill (Gawd forbid) he would be so fat that he didn't feel it or suffer. See, Rick. If you visit the girls, get donuts and hot fresh coffee, you will be much safer!

Hey everyone-
Thanks you guys SOOO much for responding. Obviously a hot topic. I think both sides are guilty at times...and like I said..hands down..HANDS FREE :)..there are far more unsafe drivers of cars on the roads than motorcycles.
909guy-nice points..thanks for writing in.
wooopa..you as well..thank you-good idea on
the special lane Ssssteel!
Be careful and drive safe everyone-have a great rest of the week-

Hi Rick,
I own a motorcycle shop and when I get first time riders in my shop I tell them to stop riding till they have taken a riding course.
I have been riding bikes for over 30 years and riding riding today is tough(people on cell phones, eating, drinking....)
Ride like they don't see you is the best advice I can give people that want to ride the street.

I can picture Rick on one of those three wheeled monsters that Suzanne was on last week. Rick in a gloos black one would be nice. The chicks would chase him forever.
