People keep asking me why congress bothered to get involved in baseball's steroid scandal. As I mentioned in a previous blog parents began marching on capital hill when their kids started dying after taking steroids because they wanted to be like their heroes. Makes sense to me. Steroids and human growth hormone are illegal without a prescription even if baseball didn't have rules against the drugs until very recently.
Then I heard it said the other day that there are lots of other drugs out there. Many of them prescription drugs for stress, depression, sleeping aids. you name it. Prescription drugs are a big business. How do we keep our kids away from the drugs in our own medicine cabinets let alone the guy on the street corner pushing the illegal stuff.. But we manage don't we? So should we care if the guys on the baseball diamond are shooting up so they can hit the ball farther and chuck it faster? Should our kids be their concern???
Should we really care if sports is more like a circus complete with the freaks and clowns rather than an American pastime?

Rick,

Great blog guy! Yes, we should all be concerned about what the athletes are up to. Some will foolishly argue that it is a private matter, but they forget that there are young impressionable kids who look up to these guys. Parents do control the way kids grow up, but not everything is in the parents' control, as we all know. You just can't control kids 24/7. I'm sure that most parents will discuss things like drugs and steroids with their kids, but there are always the ones who hear and then ignore their parents.

Let's hope this intervention sends a message to anyone who is thinking about doing something foolish to get away from steroids.

Cheers!

Isn't it funny how baseball will punish one guy for gambling, but look the other way when another does Steroids? How can you take a sport seriously that refuses to put Roger Maris in the Hall of Fame?

I agree that steroids must be kept away from our kids. It's tough to do this when some parents are willing to cheat to help their kids make the cut on the high school teams by getting bigger and stronger by using dangerous steroids. I see what the pros do as wrong too, but its tough to police it and nearly impossible although that is changing with cheaper testing being available.
It does bother me however when people like the person above want to cloud the issue by pointing so some other injustice like the 'Hall of Fame'. Come on, let's get focus here. We can't solve every world problem by putting them on a sliding scale. The Hall of Fame thing, has nothing to do with our kids on steroids. People are going to cheat and they always will. We can hope for better and cheaper testing and penalize those that fail. Laws without consequences are almost useless.
