By SOPHIA TAREENCHICAGO (AP) - The Rev. Jesse Jackson used the N-word during a break in a TV interview where he criticized presidential candidate Barack Obama, Fox News confirmed Wednesday.

The longtime civil rights leader already came under fire this month for crude off-air comments he made against Obama in what he thought was a private conversation during a taping of a "Fox & Friends" news show.

In additional comments from that same conversation, first reported by TVNewser, Jackson is reported to have said Obama was "talking down to black people," and referred to blacks with the N-word when he said Obama was telling them "how to behave."

Though a Fox spokesman confirmed the TVNewer's account to The Associated Press, the network declined to release the full transcript of the July 6 show and did not air the comments.

Jackson - who is traveling in Spain - apologized in a statement Wednesday for "hurtful words" but didn't offer specifics.

"I am deeply saddened and distressed by the pain and sorrow that I have caused as a result of my hurtful words. I apologize again to Senator Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, their children as well as to the American public," Jackson said in a written statement. "There really is no justification for my comments and I hope that the Obama family and the American public will forgive me. I also pray that we, as a nation, can move on to address the real issues that affect the American people."

A spokeswoman for Jackson's civil rights organization, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, said she could not confirm that Jackson used the slur.

Jackson has called on the entertainment industry, including rappers, actors and studios, to stop using the N-Word. He also urged the public to boycott purchasing DVD copies of the TV sitcom "Seinfeld" after co-star Michael Richards was taped using the word during a rant at a Los Angeles comedy club in 2006.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who has joined Jackson in opposition of the word, said Wednesday he wanted to hear the comments for himself and declined to discuss Jackson specifically.

"I am against the use of the N-word by anyone and I think we must be consistent," he told The Associated Press. "We must not use the word."

Can you imagine the reaction if a Republican had said what Jackson did about NoBama??? Lead story on all news channels, front page on all the newspapers..

Yet, because Jackson said it, the story is buried in many media outlets as shown by afelton not hearing it.

Do a google search, you will find a lot of sources for this story.

They didn't air the entire statement? I didn't hear the "N" word either. Google it, OK.

...evidently he did use the “N” word , Fox said it was not directed at Obama and not part of the “story” so they did not run that part of the tape ...but yea it is a story on its own ! He wants to stop every one els from using this word but uses it himself ? I think it is high time we take away his “toys”, stop letting him make this word a big deal and exploit sentiment against others for personal gain...no longer should we respond to the “N” word with anger and animosity , better that we let it go forth and be used by anyone who wants to and point at their ignorance a laugh them off the stage ! ...we are not making any progress.

...if you want to make progress , then you need to own that word like whites own other words “Red neck” , “cracker” etc....in Christmas Florida they have something called “Cracker Christmas” every year and young boys say Hell yea when you try to insult them by calling them “red necks” ...the “N” word has only the power YOU give it ! So if you want to “own” it you will need to make it something that you are proud of ! ...I dare you hold an annual “N” word festival and show open beaming pride if some one calls you that word...take the power for yourself! Make that word a battle cry and show no shame in it...or make every one stop using it ! LOL

Lets NOT embrace the word. Its hurtful language. and I wont embrace it. I dont care who says it. and Jesse Jackson should be ashamed of himself. This makes me upset because this man is calling for an end to this word and yet he uses it. I guess we as Black people will never get rid of the use of that word that our ancestors died over. What a shame!!!

Hey Afelton, I missed your weekly quote last week (?) Unfortuneatly that happens quite often and is why people always say/ask why is ok for black people to say it but not white people. Is it because of WHO says it, apparently so, Had this been anyone else (not even Imuses comments were left alone) it would have been splashed across every news station there is. Jackson was wrong so why arent the very people that he offended not calling for him to be ousted from his ACLU position?
