The Spinward Marches

by Steve_Edwards from Los Angeles

Robert Crais has written a series of books starring LA private eye Elvis Cole. It's a great series and the newest book is the best.

It's called 'The Watchman' and this one features Elvis' partner Joe Pike; the lean, lethal guy who is emtionally deeply scarred but never swerves from his sense of right and wrong.

When he runs for exercise at three in the morning along Ocean Ave in Santa Monica, coyotes run with him. He's that kind of guy.

In 'The Watchman,' his task is to protect a Paris Hilton clone wild child from sinister forces and we learn about the really screwed up Pike.

The book flies by.... Elvis is there for laughs and support and the wild child comes to grips with her life.

Read it!!!

Steve, i prpmise i will TRY to get this book.

i don't have a lot of time to read anything that is not a nursing textbook. As it is i have about three books waiting in line to be read (including KITE RUNNER & THE AZTEC).

Whenever i start school, recreational reading basically gets put in the back burner.

Anywho.... maybe durring my spring break!!!!

Hello Steve!
First, my favorite movies. That's always a difficult question. How 'bout I do a few of the decades after the silent era, but before I was born. I like far too many movies to do a whole list!
1930's- The Public Enemy, Angel's With Dirty Faces, Little Caesar, Of Human Bondage, The Roaring Twenties, The Wizard of Oz, They Made Me A Criminal, Gone with the Wind, A Day at the Races, Petrified Forest.
1940's- The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Grapes of Wrath, Sorry Wrong Number, Casablanca, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Double Indemnity, Call Northside 777, Kings Row, Gaslight.
1950's- A Streetcar Named Desire, Sunset Boulevard, The Caine Mutiny, A Place in the Sun, East of Eden, The Defiant Ones, Some Like It Hot, The King and I, Rear Window, Shane.
That's a very partial list. There are so many great movies. What are your favorites, Steve (and everyone else)?
Regarding your reviews- I hope you find something you are really excited about soon, these reviews are mostly luke warm. But then so are the films. A great movie I saw on DVD recently is Sherry Baby with Maggie Gyllenhaal. It is a very real, raw and heartbreaking and was probably made for 1 20th of the budget that went into the Sandra Bullock movie.
I haven't read any of the Robert Crais series. It is best to start with the first one?
One more thing... I saw Jillian comment this morning that only 7 people viewed your blog (you said 5)!! Hang in there Steve. Remember maybe only one of a hundred that view, actually leave a comment. I think you're doing a great job.

Steve,

Firstly, I like the all black look you sported on this week's reviews. All you needed was a guitar and you could've been Johnny Cash.

I couldn't agree more about "Blood Diamond." I was just hoping Leo wouldn't annoy me in the film but instead, he turned in a great role and did nail the accent as you said. I agree with you that it indeed was a very good film.

Dear Steve,

Went to Barnes & Noble yesterday. I couldn't find it in the mystery section. I did see lots of Sherlock Holmes.

An attractive girl approached, and related that all of the Best Sellers are in the front of the store. I began reading "The Watchman" in the afternoon, kept reading into the night and missed dinner.

"The Watchman" is an engrossing thriller. A real page turner. Robert Crais draws the reader a pretty picture and sometimes not so pretty. You can't put the book down, which makes you miss lunch and dinner.

I'm only on page 165 and feel as though I'm part of the story.

Joe Pike reminds me a little bit of...me.

I'll be done tomorrow and will conclude my review of "The Watchman."

Dear Steve,

If I were in a car with Paris Hilton and she said, "do you want to watch me masturbate?" (play with herself).

I would lend her a hand...

Robert Crais' unique subjects coupled with great character development, makes "The Watchman" an exciting read.

As much as I liked it, I felt that "The Watchman" was a bit mild.

A bad accident, murders & assassinations, a screwy kidnapping, and a happy ending are the high points in "The Watchman." I liked it and will probably read all of the 'Joe Pike' novels.

If I were a writer, this book would teach me how to organize my thoughts into a readable text.

Thanks Steve

Steve has been the host of GoodDay LA for 12 years and counting. While it seems that he's been on LA tv for 60 years, it's really been since 1978. Steve's been the host of too many shows to mention but a few are: Am Los Angeles, Two on the Town, Live in La,: he has a closetfull of emmys, a star on Hollywood Blvd and looks forward (most mornings) to his time with Jillian and Dorothy, and yes, he reads most of the stuff you write!
