The Spinward Marches

Hello again..... No movie review this time, (check Elaine's), but how about a review of Goodday LA? It's astounding to think that the three of us have been doing this thing for almost 12 years!

When we we started together there were 5 morning shows and we finished about 12th in the ratings. There was a day we had what is referred to as hash marks, i.e., officially, no one was watching. We had more people operating the studio cameras than we had viewers! There was another when we had an interview with the former Surgeon-General of the United States who was basically fired by her long time friend, Bill Clinton, because she advocated masturbation as a way of reducing teenage pregnancies and sexualy transmitted diseases. She came on the show and talked about the dissapointment and betrayal she felt from her former friend whom she believed had caved into political pressure and was being a hypocrite in his actions. We all thought it was a great and truly interesting segment......Three people were watching. I think we had four when it started and we ended up with two...so the average was three. Maybe all three liked it. i'm not sure. We had some strengths, Tony McEwing foremost among them, but it took time. Eventually the show evolved into what it is today . We've described it many ways....You give us 20 minutes, we'll give you a headache

or...... How much can one man take?....

which Jill and Dorothy now call , How much can two women take? Or, We're Number One... There's no accounting for taste! I attribute what success we've had to the leadin that Tony and Jean and Lisa B give us...

and the advantage we have with Rick in the chopper

and strong reporters with big tv presence in the field, Rick L, Nischel , Elizabeth, Bobby Dl, ( you should check their blogs..but I realize that I'm too close to the action to fully get why the three of us just don't annoy everybody to death. We annoy ourselves! But have you noticed, slowly, over the years that we, in spite of ourselves, started having a good time? I I'm just free associating and a real review is beyond my ability to separate myself from the noise...so.... even though this may sound like a cop out... You Do The Review!!!!!!!! What is your take on GDLA? Why do watch? Why do you not watch? Go to comments or whatever it is called and fire away!!!!!

Well I only want to say I like the show and yes the show has gone through Alot of times...

Boy I could say that again "A lot of times"

Wonder what others have been through?!

1) G-day LA uses the Good word and not nice words so I watch from the begining over grammer.

2) Jillian's caught my eye, then I just like the show, and about 4-years ago sort of bonded with the show...I am glad the show was there!

3) Good Day LA appears to be a good supportive group of people, they love America, and try hard to be fair.

hey steve i have been watching you three for as long as you have been on. I started watching it in the mornings before i went to work. What i love about it is you get everything breaking news, bantering back and forth, entertainment , gossip, and i loved watching you give advise to jill when she was going through tough times. And look at her now she was grossed out by dorothy talking about having nash! So to summ it up good day l.a. is like family and i think that is what makes it so great the honesty of the show. so thanks to all of you for being just who you are!

I like the subtle digs you make that Dorothy and Jillian don't always pick up on.

75% of this show is a joke. One-Third of the show goes to Dorthy Lucy's discussion about celebrity junk. Another third goes to FOX propaganda/promotions (i.e. american idol). Another third goes to Rick Dickert's beat-on-a-dead-horse weather reports, and the rest is sprinkled with style file and julian's frustrated/sarcastic answers to civilians' questions on the please-shoot-me-now Ask Julian segmant.

But aside from that, great show.

Steve,

When a show is as good as GDLA, I can only tell you why I watch, and why I think other people watch.

In a nut shell, you keep it real. In today's day an age the world seems so wrapped up with their own image. All that matters is how they are seen by their peers. I have to be thin, because society says so. I have to be the smartest, because society says so. Or I have to be the best parent, because society says so.

You see where I'm going with this. The three of you do such a good job at being yourselves without even trying. Your fans gravitate towards it. We are so starved for honesty, that we know the truth when we hear it. You three don't hold back, and we love it.

This wasn't really a review of your show. It was more of an opinion as to why we can't get enough of you three. Just the fact that you guys honestly can't figure out why you're the #1 show, is breath taking and refreshing.

So keep on, keeping it real.

P.S. Tell Jillian for me, that she's not fat.... She's fluffy!

I watch the show every morning. I love it. You're my favorite part of the show, Steve. I think you're funny and smart and you're just a cool guy. Dorothy's cool too, but she's too easily distracted sometimes, so we hardly ever get the gossip haha. And I really respect Jillian's openess and honesty but I don't always agree with her and on a bad day when it's so early in the morning, she can be annoying. Forgive me. I LOVE Nichelle!! She is so cool, I love how her mom is always calling her haha. I like Rick D too, he's so smart and cute. Bobby D is cute too, he has a great smile. Lisa Breck is adorable, I love her. Elizabeth Espinosa is cool too, she's so funny. I pretty much like everybody, you all have a great chemistry and it's a family feeling. Thanks for putting on a great show!

have you ever heard the phrase...if it is not broken, don't try to fix it....well that rule is thrown out the window......in it's own weird quirky way this show is broke on so many levels....however it works and it is loved. The dry wit, the brother/sister nit picking and even the kind moments where your friendship shines thru is what keeps me tuning in every morning. In a time where reality shows are at the highest....you all have been doing realty for the past 12 years. Lets face it on a day to day basis we always do not get along with our co-workers and there is no dancing around that with you guys, however you also have a family bond that is noted and appreciated. Keep up being yourselves!

PS. TELL THAT RICK DICKERT HE IS ONE HOT TAMALE!!!

Wow!! How time flies!! I've been watching for 10 YEARS!! Tony and Jean wake me up every morning, and Jillian, Dorothy and Steve send me off to work. OMG, Ofc. Rick Quintero's so hot! He's the #1 reason I watch. Seriously, I enjoy watching the whole family in the morning. Thanks for starting my day off =)

Hello Steve!
First off, thanks for plugging my blog! Given the subject matter of my first review, I think I’ll probably earn a few hash marks myself. Maybe I’ll try some lighter fare next time, maybe not.
Now onto GDLA.
My take-
Unlike the long time viewers, I’ve only been watching for about 8 months so I can’t chime in on the evolution of the show, but here’s my two cents anyway.
Might as well state the obvious first; the success of GDLA ultimately comes down to the chemistry between the three hosts. On the most superficial level, you are three attractive likeable personalities. It’s almost right out of central casting: the handsome, friendly faced, white haired news man, the perky, petite, good girl and the sexy. guy’s gal, bombshell. There’s something compelling about watching people of such diverse type interact. A good portion of reality tv is built on just that premise.
The idea that it used to be, “How much can one man take?” and is now referred to as, “How much can two women take?” is interesting to me too. What that says to me is that the tv norm used to be news and now it’s fluff. In other words, when “real” news was (at least perceived to be) more in the forefront, it was… “How much fluff can a newsman take?” But now that fluff has surpassed hard news on tv, it’s how much serious talk from the news guy can a gossip reporter/working mom and a pop culture- fashion maven/ weather girl take?” That’s no slam on Jillian and Dorothy though. I think they are both excellent at what they do and as likeable and fun to watch as any women on local or national

tlevison. Conflicted feelings about reporting gossip is clear every day on Dorothy’s face and is very relatable to so many of us these days, especially in LA, where so many of us make “compromises” to work in the media/entertainment industry. Conversely, Jillian’s seemingly complete absence of moral conflict is almost enviable. We should all be so comfortable in our own skin.
Why do I watch?-
I started watching because I was newly back to LA after many years and I was looking for local content in the morning to get me reacquainted with the area. Your “away team” segments showed me the different neighborhoods and gave me tips on things to see and do. I particularly remember pieces on Nate and Al’s in Beverly Hills and H and M opening in Pasadena and restaurant recommendations for New Years Eve grabbing my attention. I also recognized Jillian. I’m not a big sports fan and I never saw the celebrity skating show. I remembered her from an appearance on Howard Sterns old E! show, where she was compared to porn star Christine Lindemulder! I thought she was funny and candid and she stuck in my mind.
I kept watching because, just like everyone else, I enjoyed the banter and genuineness (?) of everyone at GDLA. Of course Los Angeles is a great place to have a local show. There are always so many big names in town and Steve does excellent celebrity interviews. I remember an interview with where Steve was so engaged and excited to hear stories from the guest, Peter Falk, that it was contagious, same with Tony Bennett and so many others. I also like smart tv and when St

Steve was out for a week, I became a fan of, smart guy,Tony McEwing too (love his dance too).
I’ll continue to watch because at this point I’m completely hooked. Will Dorothy ever stop apologizing for the Britney coverage? Will Jillian finally conquer her fear of childbirth before the big day? Will Steve forever be confounded by the popularity of his own show??? I have to see how it turns out.
ps.... I had no idea I am so long winded. It took 3 posts to finsh my thought. I'll be more pith in the future.

Hello Steve
The show you have has a way to make the ratings
and that is what it is all about. People trive on gossip. But what ever station you watch there is no good news, really no happy news.
The whole staff does a great job on what they do in their position. As far as the weather you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows but jillian is fun to watch.
What can we do anyway. Good Job To All

Hi Steve!

I've been watching you guys for as long as I can remember -- has it been 12 years already!?!? I did tune out for a while when Dorothy and Jillian were gone (fired? I missed a few shows there lol) And I thought the chemistry left with them, I was sooo happy to see them return! When I have a bad nights sleep, it's fun to wake up to your guys playful banter, it puts a smile on a my face and just starts the day off right, who needs coffee, lol!! Jillian reminds me sooo much of one of my sister in laws, looks and personality wise, as well as Dorothy looks and acts like one of my best friends. And I've been watching you since I was in diapers ::snicker:: so I feel like I'm hanging with family in the morning :)

Steve has been the host of GoodDay LA for 12 years and counting. While it seems that he's been on LA tv for 60 years, it's really been since 1978. Steve's been the host of too many shows to mention but a few are: Am Los Angeles, Two on the Town, Live in La,: he has a closetfull of emmys, a star on Hollywood Blvd and looks forward (most mornings) to his time with Jillian and Dorothy, and yes, he reads most of the stuff you write!
