Move over James Frey...You got nothin! So James Frey wrote that book, A Million Little Pieces,

and several of those pieces were trumped up, embellished and not worth the paper they were written on...AND he hoodwinked Oprah, the most effective place to sell books to women today. Oprah caught on and nailed him on her show and it was a big chapter in pop culture.

Ah, but Clifford Irving had Frey beat by at least a million different pieces, More, than thirty years ago, he wrote the autobiograpy of the then most reknowned, reclusive celebrity in the world...the mysterious and extremely weird Howard Hughes, a man so isolated that no one could get to him except the writer Irving who gained unprecedented, one on one, access to the hermit Hughes.

Except that he didn't....He made it all up. There were no interviews, he never met Hughes, Hughes never heard of him. There was also no Oprah, but(if my memory is correct) he went on 60 minutes with none other than Mike Wallace and Wallace questioned him about the truth of the book, I remember Irving looking straight into the camera and asking Howard to go public and tell the world that it's all true.

James Frey=small fry fibber It was a big deal then; now with celebrity obseesion, E, Extra, Access, ET, all the celeb driven tabloids, not to mention the internet and talk radio etc..this would be a Hugh, Gigantic story! Maybe as big as Paris Hilton,,Okay that's probably going too far..but you get the point. It seems the movie, The Hoax, directed by Lasse Hellstrom isn't playing in a lot of theaters and that's too bad. Starring Richard Gere in one of his best performances as Irving, a man on the edge of panic, but always quick to come up with a lie, The Hoax is really a lot of fun, a little bit of a hoax itself. It tells the story, ( with a few extra added embellishments of it own), could have been a little shorter, but kept me involved all the way through. you've got to see Alfred Molina as Irving's sidekick and suffering co-conspiritor. Catch it while you can and let me know what you think.

Another movie I really liked was The Lookout with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This was another good one that just slipped through and deserved more attention. Anybody see that? Finally, what happened to Grindhouse? I didn't see it....what did you think?

Hey Steve? Are you now via'ing for Dorothys job as entertainment reporter? (lol) I know just how much you enjoy the gossip from Tabloid's......NOT..but then again, wouldn't be a bad idea, you all switching chairs once an awhile. I'd pay to see Jillian actually try to do any serious reporting, and the thought of you wearing her 'fashions' ooooo Hold me back!
BTW I do wish you'd stop boucning around from your blogs...if ya keep it up,were going to start calling you Pop-Up Steve!
If the movie ever comes this way, I'll take a gander @ it.

Steven,

"Grindhouse" was horrible....I wish I had those three hours of my life back. If given a choice, I would have stayed home and banged my head against a wall until I drew blood. At least I would have accomplished something positive.

I thought Oprah was ruthless when she destroyed James Frey on her show. Even IF he changed some incidents to make better reading at least he was helping some people to stop their own addiction etc. I have a friend who's daughter read his book and it saved her life. Shame on Oprah....Love your blog Steve, keep it up!!!

Hello Mr. Edwards,
I have been a fan of yours since you had a little show with Christina Ferarie(?). I enjoy watching you and the girls on the show. I don't get to watch as often as I would like but I keep up as much as possible. Keep doing what your doing because you do it so well. Best wishes to you and your family...PEACE..

Hi Steve - agreeing with you about The Lookout. Thank goodness I checked it out as soon as it was released - took some finding because it was on so few screens. I eagerly await the DVD release. I fear JGL's performance will be overshadowed by Shia LaBoef (sp) in that other movie - the name of which I have forgotten! JGL was also mesmerizing in Mysterious Skin - hope you caught that one - an independent movie true to the book, but an audience-unfriendly subject matter - child abuse and gay sex. The book and the movie bought tears to my eyes.

when is all the volience be really looked at instead of being ignored.we should be ashamed as humans when all we do is keep on killing ourselfs and our planet, its time to think of the children and what we are leaveing them with a dieing planet full of hate, we need to all look at ourselves and what we can do to be better humans for our children.

I agree Bama -- I think she was just ticked because someone pulled the wool over the eyes of the divine Miss O!!

I wonder how many addiicts relapsed and committed suicide when it was learned that James Frey was a fraud?

Do you think anyone would read a another book like A Million Little Pieces if it were true and much better?

I think Steve should just go ahead and 'expose his gender' and advertise himself for "ESCORT."

Now we know what Steve does on Wednesday's.

I saw Fracture and it was amazingly good. Ryan Gossling is wonderful, an incredibly versatile actor - in other words, a surprise to me because I think I saw him in that Sandra Bullock movie Murder by numbers or letters or something and while he was good, I had no idea. Anthony Hopkins is almost gleefully evil...subtle nuanced acting..its really good...and you don't have the answer right away which makes for a wonderful movie all the way through.

I think that we should organize, and get a bunch of MYFOXL.A. bloggers together at a convenient movie house, and see Steve's movies all together, then come on the air and blogfest like crazy.

Steve has been the host of GoodDay LA for 12 years and counting. While it seems that he's been on LA tv for 60 years, it's really been since 1978. Steve's been the host of too many shows to mention but a few are: Am Los Angeles, Two on the Town, Live in La,: he has a closetfull of emmys, a star on Hollywood Blvd and looks forward (most mornings) to his time with Jillian and Dorothy, and yes, he reads most of the stuff you write!
