Out of the mouths of babes... and one who is not so bright

My sons and I just returned from a trip to Washington DC. We took in the typical fare. We visited the Air and Space museum, checked out the actual Declaration of Independence and marveled at the Lincoln Memorial under a full moon. Added to that itinerary, my sons decided on their own, they wanted to hold an impromptu protest in front the White House.

The two, ages 13 and 9, made signs with markers and posterboard....  then stood with them for passersby to read.

Most people read the signs and smiled. But one young man took offense to the boys call for peace and said, that he and his family had each served the country... "fighting for your BLEEP rights." I must admit, that's my sons' account. I wanted the boys to have this experience by themselves and stood a little off to the side, close enough to hear only some of the interchange. I don't doubt their account, since I could see the young man and a woman I presume was his mother who seemed unamused by my sons.

My youngest left his brother's side and came over to me to say, "that man just said the "F" word in front of a 9 year old. " Ironic, wouldn't you say? He fought for my sons rights but took offense when they exercised their right to free speech.

Impromptu protest in front of the White House...I would do the same if I had children...good for you.

And your kids will be better people after this experience.

so all the illegal immigrants taking their kids to the protests are "great" parents as well? ha!

then don't complain when your kid gets trampled on and cussed at...its a protest! that’s what happens in protests! So….DON’T COMPLAIN AND DON’T SUE. It’s good for them. It’ll teach them to be great people, I’m sure. Great at what, I’ve no idea, but that obviously doesn’t matter as long as their “great” at something :-)

Then we wonder why our youth and country is all screwed up. Maybe George Bush went to protests..??? maybe.

I know for sure that all Muslim extremists do. It's some kind of "requirement" in order to be an "extremist". Maybe the customs in the Middle East should be copied here in America. Why not? it's worked out so well for them.


yep, why protest alone, when you can make it a "FAMILY EVENT". sounds like tons of fun!!!!!
Just like illegal immigration marches and protests, FUN! they should thank us for all the 'FREEDOM' AND 'FUN' we've allowed them to have. Hey, George B. was right, illegal immigrants are good parents, and very family oriented! he finally gets one right.

If you want to protest, how about protesting about the lack of morals, discipline, and respect in our public schools. And don't even get me started on the lack of educational resources.....How about the overcrowding and lack of funding for the, how many illegal immigrants is it I have to pay for, so they can have an education and a free lunch? But MINE don't????

Now there’s something to protest about.

I appreciate your comments. But to be clear, I truly had nothing to do with this. They wanted to make the posters and the sentiments on them were their own. This was far from my idea, in fact, I initially discouraged them. And, frankly, what they want is peace, how is that objectionable.

You had "nothing" to do with this? These kids are the responsibility of YOU and your husband, like it or not. YOU and your husband have "everything" to do with this, until they turn 18. Sometimes you just have to say NO!

susan, i feel joy for you and the kids touring DC. seems great to me that the signs were held in front of the White House. the boys will not forget their experience at the house where the president lives and works! i don't know what the kids were protesting but i like it! you are a cool mom! i can tell!

People like df deportation and dasvics make me laugh. This country is built on freedom of expression but to some, if you use that freedom you're doing something wrong. People like that just sadly don't understand America; they'd have been happier in the Soviet Union.

by the way, i am currently reading Seymour Hersh's 1997 book "The Darkside of Camelot." as i often do, i opened to a random page in the middle, read to the end and then read from the beginning to where i started in the middle. the book is interesting as it describes the JFK administration. lots of deception regarding truth and what the media reported at the time. you and your two kids might enjoy it.

Explain The Sedition Acts.

I see alot of those Socialist/Marxist/Communists/Soviet Union types supporting Amnesty for the Illegal Aliens at the "peaceful" marches. Are their "expressions" examples of what's right for America? If my kids wanted to participate "with" them, as an American parent, I would be "right" to allow them to? WOW!

So, law-abiding citizens with a brain, some sense, who are caring and responsible parents, that take responsibility not only for theirs, but their children’s actions as well, that love America and uphold her fair and just laws, that respect the service and sacrifice of our men and women throughout history, who fought for our "RIGHTS" and "FREEDOMS” to begin with, who value and appreciate those freedoms WITHOUT making a mockery of them or abusing them in any way......makes us funny?

Good. I'd rather be funny than stupid or irresponsible.

I’m in NO way saying that we shouldn’t protest or express our opinions. I’m simply pointing out the obvious,

HAVE COMMON SENSE AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU AND OR YOUR CHILD IF SOMEONE IS HURT AT AN EVENT THAT ONE KNOWS IN ADVANCE WILL BRING CONTROVERSY.

See the FUNNY thing about protesting is: IT’S NOT JUST YOU THAT HAS THAT RIGHT, OTHER AMERICANS DO AS WELL!
Although lately, some have FORGOTTEN that fact. ahhhh….shocking! Yes I know, it’s amazing how respect, responsibility, and common sense fly out the window when your “protests” are questioned because some don’t agree with you. Protest all you want in anyway you want, but when crap happens as a result of it….don’t complain about it. Why does Susan criticize that man? he was giving his opinion and had every right to do so. The “F” word should of been left out, fair enough, but I don’t think that makes him a bad person. The Constitution states that people who break our laws and enter our country ILLEGALLY, have the same rights as those who obey the law and respect the law?
that's interesting. I'm sure our founding fathers meant just that.
As for protesting, like I said, everyone has that right, not just the ones that agree with your point of view.

also, was susan talking about illegal immigration in her post? no, she wasn't. it's you guys who can't seem to talk about anything else.

I'm not angry. really.

Its just like I said, we all have a right to express ourselves....even illegal immigrants. So why did Susan bring up a mans comment made in response to someone elses? see my point? we can all agree that the cursing is not needed....but, we shouldn't expect people to go along with our views just cause its an adorable child or hot chick expressing them, right? that would be dumb. I brought up the illegal immigrant thing cause, imho, I don't think its right to take children or involve children in protests. they're not safe and you can count on something bad or negative to happen. that's just the way it is. it shouldn't, but it is.

OK, well that's completely reasonable.

I can't really tell from Susan's post but it doesn't sound as if that protest was about immigration. I agree people shouldn't use their kids as props in a protest but in this case it sounds like it was susan's kids idea, not hers.
