Confession here. I have no lust. Okay, let me be more specific. I have no car lust! I don't have any desire for any specific car. Well, that's not entirely true. I like the look of that Mercedes CL something or other, but practically speaking, it's too big, too expensive and the gas mileage too low. So, in my price range, I have no car lust.

So, what's a working mother to do when I inadvertently (or not, see previous blog) killed my Durango; the precious family car, the lug the kids, skis, beach gear SUV. It's dead. So, what car am I willing to spend 5 figures on. Shouldn't you want a car before you commit to paying off hundreds of dollars per month? No car called my name. Sure, I wanted a car, that could haul the kids and the gear but did I want another SUV that can on a rare occasion carry 7 people Or should I bow to the Al Gore altar and downsize to a smaller car.

Thankfully, someone wanted a specific car. My son said.. get a hybrid, go green yada yada yada.

Ultimately.. I had no reason to say no. Downsized, eco friendly, still holds 5 people/kids. But I'm not doing it to make a statement.. perhaps I did it to make someone happy.. my son. And, you know, when I gas up I'm pretty happy too. I like paying for 8 gallons of gas instead of 15.

Susan,

I think you're setting a great example of selecting a car for the benefit of your family as well as the environment. When buying a car, I place the benefits ahead of the cosmetics...ie, the style and color.

well it's good that your thinking hard about buying a car that will fit your needs and is within your price range. i see so many people not think of what they truly need. i see way too often these huge trucks and suv's and see only one person in the vehicle. then these are the same people complaining about high gas prices.

look at me, i'm single, no kids, and i drive a motorcycle. that fits my needs well. my dad has a truck because he's a contruction worker. so i could understand why he has that. but a friend of mine has a suv with no kids, doesn't go out and does the whole camping, bike riding, or canoe thing. so why does he have a suv? he saids cuz they are cool. but he's also struggling to hold on to it because of high gas prices, insurance, and the only way he's able to afford a car like that is because he lives with his parents. glad to know you think before you buy susan.

Good news, the car situation has been settled. yea! Now let's hear about the sons. what are they studying this fall? what kinds of mischief are they hearing about that you can assemble into a news story? use your sources to understand what is happening underground. Friday night lights is so lame! what are the cool kids doing? I mean the brilliant ones!

Wonderful Susan, you're going to get better gas mileage! Give us an idea of how much less gas you'll buy in a year of driving! I hope you enjoy driving a hybrid. Are you leasing it?

I'm getting about 46 miles to the gallon.. a little better than what they promise for highway driving but way below the 60 mpg they promise for city driving.
And, yes we all miss John. Luckily, Carlos is a lovely man and a wonderful addition to the Fox 11 news team.

First and foremost thank you for your professionalism on the tube. I guess everyone has their personal preference which is what makes America great, still. I love Lincolns, the bigger, the better. I like the whisper quiet, velvet smooth ride and the quiet peace it brings me on the road. Now some would say you drive a white Towncar for ego, not true, I just love Lincolns, and the older I have grown the better I have adapted to the Towncars. I also love Manta Mirage and Montage cars too, the rare forgotten American sports cars, was the first site in 1994 for Manta's too. So each person has their love affair and practicalities with their car or necessities, take your pick.

Last night i was watching your newscast. nice outfit you were wearing! very nice! you look good in shiny! i could not hear what the detective in the Valdez piece Most Wanted was saying. who okayed that audio level be the final edit? please ask someone nicely to adjust the sound. please, do it for me. i really want to hear what the theory is about motive, waht kind of gun was used, and explain to us which direction the dead man's car was facing as it rolled out of the driveway and struck the fence across the road. i did hear the cop say the dead man was shot in the back as the car was rolling so presumption is that the back end of the car was closer to the wanted man's residence in the back of the house. PBS Nova has an interesting story about genes, how cells become specialized, and how cells evolve during our lives by epi-genetics which are influenced by environment. i give you a link, 'cause like you and i think you and the brilliant sons will be stimulated! http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/genes/fate.html

Susan, tell me, how come you changed your writing style over the past couple of years?

You first did not separate the paragraphs, which was more difficult to read.

I guess perhaps I'm answering my own question; but then agian, how come you were kind of unstructured with how you wrote your blogs in the past?

Not to sound judgemental, but, I like this late style a little better. :)

Thanks,
Paul

Susan,

Some adventure huh? Even Murphy's law gets its BACHI! It's total payback for the times you got ripped off at the gas tank fill ups now, right? I bet the noise you heard in your Dodge Durango was a thermostat that jammed close; believe me, I experienced a few thermostats on my Toyota pickup partially jamming. I hope you're enjoying driving your hybrid car (Toyota or Honda?)...there's no BACHI coming your way for buying one. By the way, isn't it interesting how our Japanese moms and dads teach us about our manners? I can relate to what you did with "Dog" and his wife. Good for you! Hajimemashite!

(For those of you who are not of Japanese descent...that is a greeting we use when we get in touch for the first time, whether over the phone, internet, or in person.)
