Even though Halle Berry has an Oscar, she says she still has to convince movie studios of her ability because she is black.

"It doesn't matter that I have an Oscar, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Silver (Berlin) Bear," says Berry, who is pregnant with her first child.

"I shouldn't have had to try so hard to be considered. I should have to stop convincing studios I am right for it -- it should be on my acting merit," she said. Berry was the first black woman to win an Academy Award for best actress, winning the 2002 Oscar for "Monster's Ball."

She appears in the film "Things We Lost in the Fire."

Berry said her first question when she met the film's Danish director, Susanne Bier, was: "Do you care that I am black because this wasn't written for a black woman ... I think this might be my problem here." She said that Bier's response was, "To hell with what color you are, it doesn't matter." But Bier was an exception. In the movie industry, Berry said, race is "always an issue -- slowly it's changing." "Not having a chance is what I can't live with at this point in my career, I think I have earned that," she said.

What do you think of her experience?  I'll post my thoughts in a minute!

i think hallie is a good actress, she can pull of pretty much any role except (catwomen). i do think at times there are certain roles that race does matter. but it's rare i think. like in the film x-men. most comic fans would have been angry if the role of "storm" wasn't a black women. in the comic series, storm has always been black. so die hard comic fans would have been angry.

i think most people wont find it believable if a world war 2 movie was made, and part of hitler was played by a black actor, reguardless of how good he is.

then their are roles which it's all about the actor/actresses acting ability. in the movie halloween 2, the role for the head nurse was suppost to be a 50 year old overweight white female. she was suppost to be the strict sturn type. instead they hired a mid-twenties black women. her performance was what got her the spot. she was believeable that she could be a head nurse.

so in the end, i think it's a person ability, luck, and the role that dictate's if you can get a job or not.

Halle Berry is using the whole "I'm Black, poor me" thing to her advantage. When she said she was the first Black actress to get an Oscar, she kind of distorted the truth. She is only half black, as her mother is white and was born in England. Claiming to be purebred is a down right lie and an insult to both of her parents. She is a mixed-bred mutt.

You know, I am so sick of this crap. Its not that she is black, its that she is another one of the Hollywood whack jobs who needs to get a grip and become a normal person again. Many of these celebs are total whackjobs who couldn't tell their film from a Cannes, even if it hit em in the smacker. She needs to just go cruise temple and third and see homeless starving people from the window of her expensive car and than she might get a reality makeover!

Thanks for this topic, the more we expose these tinselturds and hollysluts the better we will all be!

I think Halle has a very successful career. I would love to hear examples of how she's lost out roles to other actresses because she was black. She didn't go into specifics.

I do believe there is a shortage of roles for minorities. There are minority-themed shows like George Lopez, Girlfriends, but how about more variety in regular films and sitcoms? Our country has such variety. Our shows don’t seem to accurately reflect what we look like. When I look at the people in my life, it's a variety of all races and cultures. Shouldn't tv reflect how we live?

When Halle was on Oprah promoting “Things We Lost in the Fire,” she said people working on the film made a big deal about what color the children would be. Have you seen the kids who are in the film by the way? They’re the cutest curly-headed boys.

I happen to be partial to people who are "mixed" because I am too. I grew up with one latino & one white parent - and we all look different. I have tan skin, my brothers look a bit more pale.
I don't think Halle claims to be purebred - like an animal?!? Is anyone purebred anything? And if so, what does it matter? A personal superiority over others?

I know Halle credits her white mother with raising her and being a powerful influence in her life. But Halle can't looks black, is perceived as black and because she has a bit of both backgrounds, why can't she claim both?
I'm half white (a mix of Scots-Irish, German, English) and half-latino/hispanic (Mexican & Portuguese).

My husband is half Basque & half Irish.
Can you imagine our kids?

Look, Suzanne. You know who has it right. Bill Cosby God Bless him. He is being called every liberal name in the book by many within the black community. The wealthiest woman in entertainment is a black woman, the ambassador of the USA is a black woman, what more does this woman want? She has millions, just drive her down temple and third by the missions and let her see Black, White, Latino people amongst others or go by Chinatown and Koreatown and you will find poor Asians too. Poverty is all over, and so are opportunities, Her stuff believe it or not stinks as much as everyone' else's does, and truthfully she is crying with a loaf of bread under both arms while falsely claiming racism for her greedy profit and inflated ego. I think those comments hit the nail on the head. Maybe she should take a cool million or two and help some black neighborhoods. When was the last time this crybaby did that? That is my point Suzanne, she is a spoiled rich brat like any other and that now classifies her in my official book of Hollysluts! How's that?

Okay a shortage of roles for minorities. Next to whites, blacks have a lot of shows. Next to them, there are some Latinos on English speaking channels...a few shows. Asians, very few if any. Than let us include actual Arab or Middle Eastern actors? Pacific Islanders (no not Maria Quiban - that's cheating...wink-wink)Eurasians, Indonesians, Nordic peoples, Mongolians, Eastern Russians - any Russians, Armenians and the list goes on and on and on.

Ok, ok, I see it's hard to feel compassionate for the rich. I get that part.

Sebar - let us include them all! When I drive around Hollywood, it's not just tall blondes with blue eyes. There are all sorts of different cultures - nearly all of the cultures you mentioned. Bring it on!

Yes include them all. I often ream Britney, Lindsey and others like Sean Penn up here and on other blogs and they are white so I am not just saying Halle because she is black. Please don't send this topic in that direction because it is not the correct direction to go with me and not what my post is about. The problem with Halle is the same as my posting in Christine's recent blog, is that it is not a personal issue, but rather an entertainer culture issue. Halle is apart of the evil entertainment culture industry that uses nearly every opportunity to scathe the United States and its citizens while she lives high off the hog. What does she really have to complain about? I think Bill Cosby and Clint Eastwood has it all right about the "whiners" out there, and I certainly know that when it comes to the celebs not all, but a good portion of the younger crowd in the entertainment field is a vile and filthy corrupted culture unworthy of American citizenship. It has nothing to do with wealth either, because I know a number of very wealthy wealthy folks, who act with dignity and self respect and are grateful for everything they have worked hard for. She has millions, its time for her to shop crying with millions and the same for all the entertainers.

Wow sebar, how do you really feel? I musta missed Hallle's crybaby interview. Don't you think having a baby will bring her down to earth? It is the most painful and the most beautiful love one can feel. Just look at Jillian.

Well let's see how I really feel. She has millions, lives beyond the norm that a major percentage of American's will never see unless they hit the lottery, she has almost guaranteed employment status, can open or buy into any business on the globe with no efforts, lives in a nice secured premise, has a worldwide fanbase, oh I forgot, she had one too many to drink and a hit and run or two, which is a major felony, but hey (celebrity tiered justice, right?). I don't feel sorry for her, nope not at all.

Isn't Halle Berry's mother white? She is a beautiful girl, but needs to learn matters.

I grew up in the suburbs of DC, and I was the minority and she should accepted the award without mentioning her color, because it does not matter.

George Clooney said that another black actress won an Oscar from her role in the movie 'Gone with the Wind' too.

We have come along way, but thinking we are one color is a taught thing.

So she has a Hollywood ego, big deal. Being a mom has nothing to do with all that bs. Making sure you can take care of another human being and trying to be a good parent is the hardest job in the world and there are no financial gains, only heart and soul primitive gifts. God bless her and I am sure she won't pull a Britney.

Sebar, I'm worried about you...sounds like you need a groovy night out on the town or a long nap. Maybe all this anger should be channeled into a new story...? I admire you and your talent, you just seem a little bitter lately. What's up?

I agree with Halle. Other than in niche TV programs (Girlfriends, Cane. Lost and Heroes are proving to be the exception) or movies (Illegal Tender, any Tyler Perry film) there is a lack of diversity. In my heart of hearts I don't think it's racism, but just a lack of awareness. Casting agents do not have the vision to consider different ethnicities for leads. Even if you do manage to get roles and become established (Halle, Eva Mendes, Jennifer Lopez) there's still a battle to find roles that will allow the opportunity to show a vaster range (more vaste?). Whoopi Goldberg, I believe, broke down alot of barriers: she had lead roles when it wasn't the fashion to be a dark-skinned Black woman and not what Hollywood considers attractive. But even she with all of her talent could not break into the stratosphere as her White counterparts who were character actors.

I agree. It's very simplistic to expect someone to only acknowledge one side of theirselves. I have family who are bi-racial and they identify with both sides (Black/Caucasian). But unless someone has a working knowledge of their parental make-up, no one would think they were anything but Black. So I can completely understand if Halle identifies more with her Black heritage because that's how society views her.

i don't know Halle, but if i'm going to hire her, i want an interview. i think she should be happy she gets an audition. lots of people want to get work acting. she does not want to audition? does she have fear of rejection? does she want to be paid for the audition? i think people are not sure they want to hire her.

Halle Berry is a FRAUD!!!

Spanish television needs diversity in it's news rooms and regular shows. Spanish television should end the racism and have equal time for english, japanese, korean, etc... on it's programs. Stop the racism by Spanish television!!
