One day before I turned 16, my dad took me to an empty lot in Norwalk to teach me how to drive a stick shift.  Before that day, the closest I had come to being behind the wheel was the simulator at Downey High School.

The simulator was a little booth with a video screen, not unlike other booths I've heard of where you watch questionable videos.   It featured an ancient 60's video featuring surprises like balls popping into the street and children chasing after them.  The best part was the steering wheel about 24 inches in diameter.  It was kind of tough.  I used to imagine it being a big gold lowrider.

So back to learning to drive.  I imagined sitting comfy inside a big friendly Chevy Impala.  My father put me inside his Mustang 5.0 with the tightest stick shift I've commanded to this day.  Why not a Honda, dad?  You can tap the stick into place.  With the 5.0, I had to grip the stick, and force it to change gears with my noodle arms.  The clutch was no easier.  I got a cramp in my left leg just trying to get it to work without stalling.

Because my dad was a former race car driver, I had a handsome reward once I I learned how to shift gears without stalling.  We drove through puddles, did spin outs and sharp turns.  It's a lesson that haunts me to this day....

When I turned 16, I got 4 speeding tickets and nearly had my license suspended.  I was chasing the thrill I got in that abandoned lot.

I did get that thrill the same year, when a driver slammed on their brakes while I was cruising down Brookshire.  I slammed on mine too (still have never gotten into an accident like that, defensive driving people!)  but forgot one of the tires in back was a donut.  That 5.0 spun around in a 180 so fast, I was facing the driver behind me in a flash.  I was scared, but it was thrilling!  I'll never forget that feeling!

So let's get to the point already, if it hasn't already been humming underneath....

I love fast cars.  I can't sit & watch an entire race on tv, but if you've ever been to one in person, you know what I'm talking about.

I love the rumble of the cars that rattles your bones, the screeching sound of the engines - idling! - that makes my heart race, the elation when the cars whiz by, the thrill when a race car makes a pit stop.

My parents raced in the 60's and 70's at tracks all over SoCal.  They are quick to remind me it was back when you could have an average job & pinch pennies to buy a Sunbeam and even a Porsche.  Nowadays, it takes serious dough for the kind of racing they used to do.

One promising aspect of racing is drifting.  I don't know much about it, but when I did the preview for the Long Beach Grand Prix, they were the cool crowd.  Young,  fun, driving souped up cars that you also see on the street.  From wikipedia, I learned one of the first Drifting competitions was held over a decade ago at Willow Springs Raceway.  My parents used to race there & that's where I attended racing school.

My mother just informed me that she quit racing when she found out she was pregnant with me.  :)  My older brother informed me she often beat my dad in time trials by a second.  A fact my dad doesn't bring up, but I hear from anonymous sources that he's secretly proud.

I really need to take racing lessons again.  Serious ones.  Can't wait.  Go to my album for photos from our LB Grand Prix Preview Day!

Below is a photo of me & Tanner Foust.  He's a drifter who did stunt work in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift.  He took me for my first ride drifting!

Me & photojournalist Julio Duran having too much fun.

Photojournalist Brett Babcock really wanted to get inside the Indy Car.  So did I.  When we learned the seat was molded to the driver's body, we didn't ask to try it out... darn!

Me and Wilmer Valderrama.  He's so cute and always a gracious interview.

Brett Babcock rode in the pace car & filmed too.  He's a trooper! :)

Julio Duran has the big camera.  He got some great shots!

hi z'anne, this blog gave me a smile! when i was in high school i took driver's ed and got credit towards graduation. now i was only 15 and in tenth grade, but it gave me points towards whatever a high school grad is worth in real life. did i tell you that i think you are very attractive? so i was taking driver's ed and we had some time in a simulater at another high school after our own classes were finished. (my school was where the highly intelligent kids learned Latin and read "media is the message"). so i, a tenth grader, am sitting in a simulater, watching a film on screen and the car in the film comes to a stop. i am sitting in my simulater, foot on the brake petal, and the instructor tells me that my foot is not pressing hard enough on the brake pedal. the film showed us at a stop. my foot was on the brake. yet i am being told that i am not pressing hard enough! i told the instructor i was sorry. but when i got back to my school the next day and the driver's ed teacher told me i might flunk the course if i do not press harder on the brake pedal when the film shows we are at a stop, i told him i would try harder. do you think jillian likes me?

Wow! That is such a great story....You know I watch the show every morning and I would've never thought that you were in to car racing. Thats amazing how you think you know somebody but yet you have no idea what they really are like deep inside. Well Suzanne I hope that you do get to take those lessons and I hope you share it with us how your experience went.

I still drive down Brookshire Ave. every morning on my way to work. Deffensive Drivers!! lol, let me guess, in front of the Downey Hospital?? =)

This is a perfect blog for you. Stick to the lighter topics. And while you're at it, go race to the Wizard of Oz and ask him for a brain!

Hi Suzanne!

Great Blog again! Now, I know the Downey area you mentioned; my late uncle used to live on Chaney Avenue, near Florence. If you ever saw a Japanese gardener driving a green 1968 Ford pickup truck in the area back in the 80s to around late 1994, that was most likely him. I have his old truck now...3 speed column shift stick with a V8. I'm doing some repairs on it, as time allows, and look forward to driving it around.

Now, my older sister, brother & I all learned how to drive a stick on a 1962 AMC Rambler Classic (3 speed column shift), and my brother & I also drove our dad's 1959 Ford F100 pickup truck - same thing - while learning. My dad never bought an automatic. We still have the old 59 and the Rambler. I need to restore the old truck; it has over 228,000 miles on the engine without being rebuilt, and it needs an overhaul badly. I've had it parked since July 1993 now. I have a friend who owns an antique Ford Pickup Truck parts business in Anaheim & Pomona.

Are you driving a stick these days?

mystere - downey! that is so cool. we lived near east middle & then rio san gabriel school. that is so cool you have your late uncle's old truch. it sounds like it's been loved & has lots of stories with all those miles. V8... a gal can dream. :)

the rambler is gorgeous. sounds like my dad - never buying an automatic. he never did when we were younger. we had all sorts of crazy cars. the volkswagon thing & baja bug were my favorites. (we used to ask to ride in our uncles "quiet car" is what we called it. it was a cadillac).

sounds like you and your friend have an excuse to get together again.

i am not driving a stick. i live near hollywood & driving up la cienega in a stick, i always fear my car rolling backwards & bumping the driver behind me!

abe & novabortion - thank you! i am loving my new morning gig.

oh sebar.

Suzanne,

You area real trooper! After working the morning, and responding to the bloggers on a late Friday afternoon say plenty about you! I just picked up a local News Enterprise page just before coming on line, and there's a carshow scheduled for Saturday April 26th in Seal Beach...off Main Street and Ocean Avenue...right by the pier! I'm hoping to hop the OCTA bus to Cal State Long Beach to attend their annual Kaleidoscope event, then ride my bike to the car show, and hop the bus back to Cypress.

Now about my uncle's 68 Ford: he only had around 112,000 miles on it when he passed away in 1995, one low mileage truck for its age. I've put about 40,000 miles since I got it in 1995. Gas is just too much, but I'll enjoy it leisurely once I get it back on the road. The classic 3 on a tree is plenty of fun to drive. I can't wait to have 2 old Ford F-100s restored and back on the road...the '59 will be for my older brother.

And about my uncle and aunt...if you know about that ice cream factory on Woodruff Avenue just north of Imperial Highway, my uncle and aunt were the last ones living in that converted house before they sold it in 1979.

Cheers!
