So what a shock! Gas prices are on the rise again after oil futures reached a record high. The price of a barrel of crude rose above 97-dollars for the first time ever. I got lucky yesterday and  found regular for $2.99 but in most places the price is well over 3-bucks. Imagine saying I got lucky by finding it below 3-dollars. How warped our idea of "cheap" has come.  So now I might as well date myself. When I started driving in California back in the late 60's, gas sold for about 36-cents a gallon. Those were the days. How cheap to you remember gas prices? Send me a reply.

A LOT of people don't know that SPECULATORS on Oil Futures effect the price of Oil and Gasoline MORE even then the Oil Producing Middle Eastern Countries and CERTAINLY more then the Oil Companies themselves..

What I DON'T understand is WHY IS it that the GOREBAL WARMING Enthusiasts are getting away with their Mock Indignation over this..HIGH PRICED FOSSEL FUELS have been THEIR Goal for DECADES...It's what GOREBAL WARMING is ALL about...

27.9 a gallon with the minimum wage at about 1.25.

When I first started driving in 1974, my first vehicle was a Yamaha 125 motorcycle. I used to put 75 cents worth of gas in it and drive all week. The gas tank was barely two gallons so that would put the price at around forty cents.

I remember the first time that I saw gas for a dollar - August 1979.

Do you remember the LAST time that you saw gas for less than a dollar? In case you do not recall, it was right after 9/11/01 when gas plummeted to a dollar and stayed there for a couple of months.

Where's Bill Clinton? When he was president, we had gas as cheap as 85 cents (in 1998).

It's all that crook, Bush's, fault. He's an oil guy. THAT's why gas is so expensive.

BTW, Tom. How much are your friends north of the border paying for gas now? When I was in Nova Scotia back in August, I paid $1.049 per litre. Yikes!

Now that the laughs provided by a rambling programmed response are out of the way, back to the theme of this thread.

Tom, I have you beat by a few years (mid 60's) & I remember gas price wars by competing gas stations accross the street from each other that got the price down to 24 cents a gallon.

It is amazing what we consider is "cheap" now especially since about 6 years ago the price was under $1.50.

Unfortunately, it may not be long before we consider under $4 a gallon cheap.

gasbuddy.com has an interesting chart where you can compare the price of crude to the average U.S. gas price. While the prices for the most part mirrored each other for years, since 5/07 crude has spiked without a corresponding move by gas prices. $4/gallon gas may not be too far off.

All seriousness aside, I will assert that gas is still too inexpensive. It is all about supply and demand and the price has not gotten high enough to quell demand.

I had to drive from Alachua to Tampa Sunday afternoon to catch an evening flight. The traffic on southbound I-75 was unbelievable. Obviously, no one has cut back on their driving.

60's when I first started driving....no more the 25 cents a gallon. We would ride around all the drive-ins for hours and hours and never give a care about gasoline prices.

Golly! Who didn't answer the question? As usual.

Here's a good one:

I was watching a "Let's Make a Deal" on Game Show Network the other day. Judging from the cars that they were giving away, I would place the year as 1971 or '72 (small bumpers). One of the prizes was 1000 gallons of Phillips 66 gas. Retail value: $350. For those of you in Rio Linda, that's 35 cents per gallon.

Time to get out the old Flintmobile. It's excellent on gas but heck on the feet...

I wonder how these folks with those huge SUVs afford to drive them. I suggest more bicycle paths next to our public roads...thank you.
