A South Florida man lost his arm in an alligator attack near Lake Okeechobee over the weekend.

Kasey Edwards, 18, of Okeechobee, was swimming along a buoy line at the Nubbin Flough boat ramp around 2 a.m. on Sunday when the alligator bit his arm.

Edwards latched on to a nearby buoy and held on tightly as his armed was severed from his body.

"I was just like holding on with everything I could for this gator trying to pull me under," said Edwards.  "I'd surface, get a gasp of air, and then he'd just shake again and pull me under. He did it about 5 times," added Edwards.

He was able to swim to the shoreline where he called friends for help. He was transported to Holmes Medical Center in Melbourne.

The alligators was trapped by officials with the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission.  Edwards' arm was recovered following a necropsy of the 11-foot reptile.

Edwards says he and his friends had been drinking, but insists that alcohol played no role in his decision to go for a swim in waters known to be infested with alligators.

Time to share your gator tales…

Have any of you had a close call?

Learned to water ski in the Everglades as a kid, there were always Gators there. It was fun to run them over with your ski's. You learned to stay up...lol

That City Utilities Engineer in St Cloud should be fed to the gators in the RCW pond over his silly and mean garbage can laws. It’s a crime!!

Love to all – Monkey Boy

I remember a local story 8 or 9 years ago about some kids breaking into Deltona High's Agriculture farm and throwing the chickens into the water for the gators that gather near the Deltona docks. Then they would just watch the chickens become dinner....Chicken sounds good right now

I use to swim there a long long time ago too, but I at least knew to scope out the area first before going in even back then! I'm sure the gator population has grown since then too! This kid has a reminder now for the rest of his life now! OH YEAH...I caught me a rattle snake today! It's about 4' long and has a really nice diamond back hide. My husband is making himself a hunting staff and wanted to use snake skins. So far I've got 2 really nice hides for him!

When I was a kid my family and I went camping on Jeckle Island in Ga. While riding a bikecycle on a bike path I came across a 6 ft gator. He scared me as much as I scared him.

As far as that guy, COMMON SENCE, dont swim at night in a gator infested place. Or I should say lack of common sence due to drinking.

I had a close call with an all you can eat gator bite platter at Lightsie's in Okeechobee.
I think I will do it again.

I have several...Once, around '98, I was cruisin' at a fairly good clip in my Camaro, on Hwy 92 near DeLand right at dusk, and all of a sudden, THA-THUNK! THA-THUNK! I thought I had RUN OVER a PERSON in the road. I skidded off onto the shoulder, backed up a little bit, pulled off of the road, and jumped out, fearing the worst. There was a 6-8 ft gator, all smashed in the middle, thrashing around, jaws snapping, MAD AS HELL! I got back in my car, and called the Game Commission. They came out, and said, "Well that's what happens when they play in the road!" Another time, near dark, our airboat DIED slap in the middle of Lake Woodruff, an area where gators haven't been hunted for over 50 years. No cell phone signal. My smarta- husband (the Deputy Sheriff) says, "We can always swim to shore." luckily, he had his radio. He called "Central" and asked them to call a buddy of his, and to tell him to come and find us. He did, and towed us in. While we waited, I shined a spotlight around. In every direction I looked, there were RED eyes, hundreds of them. Some were only a couple inches apart, others were SEVERAL inches apart. There were some MACK DADDY gators in that lake, all around
us, and there were some up on shore, too. Waiting, just waiting. My husband gator hunts on a regular basis with Curtis Lucas, a professional trapper for the state. Curtis is so busy with complaint calls, which have to go through the FWC, he can barely keep up. The orders, with permit #'s attached come off his fax machine at his home office 24/7.

FOR ONE THESE PEOPLE WHERE NOT OF AGE TO DRINK AND IF HIS UNCLE IS A GATOR TRAPPER AND HE KNOWS ABOUT HOW MANY GATORS HAVE RECENTLY BEEN PULLED FROM THE AREA THEN HE GOT WHAT HE DESERVED AND DOES NOT NEED TO BE HELD AS A VICTIM HE PUT HIMSELF INTO THE SITUATION AND KNEW WHAT HE WAS JUMPING INTO. HE WAS ON T.V. DOWN GRADING THE FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE ABOUT THEM NOT DOING THEIR JOBS WELL IF YOU WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A DUMBA** THE GATORS WERE WHERE THEY NEED TO BE AND YOU HAD NO COMMON SENSE. DON'T BLAME OTHERS FOR YOUR OWN INGORNACE

I'm with you, AMYD. I just heard that same thing - that this idiot is now blaming the Fish and Wildlife department for allowing too many gators in the area. Duh - FLORIDA!! People: Start taking responsibility for your own moronic behavior!!!!!!!!!!!! Drinking - late night swimming - Florida: Can you say, "Disaster waiting to happen?" Sigh.

We used to see people all the time, stopped on the boardwalk overlooking Paynes Prairie up near Gainesville, feeding the Gators! The one who took the cake was the moron who gave his young child (maybe 6) a piece of fried chicken, and TOLD HER to go feed the gator! I immediately called 911. But if that gator had killed his kid, he'd have been ready to sue anyone rather than accept the fact that his gross negligence was the real threat to that child. Gators are absolutely beautiful, magnificent examples of nature at their best. With common sense, we can all coexist. But then, they have to deal with us stupid humans, don't they...

Twizzled, people never cease to amaze me with their stupidity! Why don't they just sleep with
2 dozen Diamondback Rattle Snakes, while they're at it?
