Do you think Wesley Snipes should be allowed to travel the world making movies while his lawyers appeal his federal tax convictions and three-year prison sentence?

Let me see... would I, being neither famous or wealthy, be allowed to leave the country while MY lawer (a court appointed one, can't afford one of my own, let alone several) appeal MY federal tax convictions and 20 year prison sentence (you'd think I'd only get 3 years? Think again!)?

What do YOU guys think the answer to that would be? Go on, take a guess.

Why is it only the rich and famous can get away with anything?
No matter who it is, they should all be treated as equalls.

I believe it says equal under the law......the trial was held, the jury found him guilty, the Judge shouldn't even have the ability to allow such a trip by a convicted felon. If the everyday working guy has to follow the law ,so should the rich and famous. Right Lou Pearlman ? Do the crime....DO THE TIME.

I have no problem with him leaving. As long as he doesn't return.

NO...He needs to stay and face the music as it now stands! No other criminal would have that option so why should he! Giving him rights to leave the country is the same as stating he is already found not guilty and also gives the appeal and his lawyers certain advantages!

If he is guilty he should be jailed but if he can work and make money let him work. However, all monies should go to the state to help pay for state funding (police, firemen, schools, etc.) Also confine him to house arrest, probation or jail when he is not working. If its not double jeapardy. He is worth more to the state and society if he can work and contribute to the economy, than to just sit in jail. After all his crime, in a small way, has effected us and the economy.

I think that the jail time was totally rediculous. All the IRS does is rape us anyway, and what exactly do they do with the money? Use it to finance such things like the unjust war with Iraq? A war that have taken the young lives of so many of our sons and brothers. So many of them kids that have not even had a chance to live their lives. I think that a very hefty fine would have sufficed. After all that is what the IRS is all about, isn't it? MONEY.
I saw this story on three different news channels and the only one that the reporter gave an opinion was this channel when Cale Ramaker commented that he doesn't think that it sits well with us (the viewers). He reported the supreme court decision on guns and the teenage drinking story which states that most of them get their alcohol from adults, and he did not offer a comment on those stories. It seems he picks which stories he comments on. If I want to comments and opinions I will watch Chris Matthews or CNN.

"I think that the jail time was totally rediculous. All the IRS does is rape us anyway, and what exactly do they do with the money?"

Nice logic there. So you're saying that since all the IRS does is "rape" everyone, I should feel free to lie and cheat on my taxes too?

"Use it to finance such things like the unjust war with Iraq? A war that have taken the young lives of so many of our sons and brothers. So many of them kids that have not even had a chance to live their lives."

And what, exactly, does the war in Iraq have to do with the topic? Its amazing how people use twisted logic like the above to justify a convicted criminal's actions.

To put anybody, rich or poor, in jail for owing money is a waiste of space that could be used for sombody that actually commits a real crime. For somebody like Snipes hit him where it really hurts, in the wallet.

As soon as his tab is paid in full, he is welcome to leave (and not return) as far as I am concerned.

This is crazy. I thought he was supposed to be in jail. Why is anyone even thinking they should let him go out of the country. Money isn't everything. Rules are rules, no matter how much money you have. At least it's how it should be!

His career is pretty much done here
so...good riddance! Anybody
that patronizes his future work
are welcome to go with him.

Tax evaders piss me off as much
as hardcore criminals
in that they are stealing from all
of us and then you get this
wealthy bonehead smiling at the
cameras every time he leaves court...BS!

First, it is wrong that you can go to jail over your taxes. It is absurd. Anybody who thinks otherwise is just plain stupid and should quit talking.

So, YES. He should be able to travel.

If the judge says know, then he is stupid too.

Just to inform the misinformed, income taxes are against the original constitution. The only reason the taxes were instated were to pay for the war effort(WWI & WWII). The government got greedy and kept them long after the wars ended.
So as sipedo said it is wrong to put anybody in jail over taxes. Besides debtors court/jail went out back in the 1700.

If we broke it down to a smaller scale, And it was me who got 3 years for tax evasion, but to pay off the fine I have to go to work so im sure the judge would let me (As I have no previous record)

Some earlier comments were valid- let him work, and take some of his pay .and also some other comments were spot on- theres no debtors prisons anymore.

Couple that with the fact that our own rich and wealthy politicians are always sliding out of trouble.....

its only taxes !
we pay them voluntarily right??....
;-)
