As you probably already know, there was no shortage of big news in the Bay Area in 2007.  From John Couey's conviction to Nick Hogan's horrific crash in Clearwater, the year brought us headline after headline.  But which story was the biggest?

We've come up with a list of 10 of the biggest-- in our opinions-- but now we want to know what you think.  Blog us here about the stories you think were the biggest of 2007.

Here's our top ten (in no particular order):

1. Nick Hogan arrested for Clearwater crash
2. Housing crisis in Florida
3. John Couey convicted in Lunsford murder
4. Two USF students face explosives, terror charges
5. Debra Lafave arrested again
6. State's property tax crisis
7. Former Idol Jessica Sierra's arrests
8. Former Largo city manager Steve Stanton has sex change
9. USF Bulls in the national spotlight
10.  Dual championships for the Florida Gators

The little 3 year old boy Josiah Wineberger who was struck in the head by a speaker at St. Petersburg baywalk and suffered a fractured scull and brain damage.

1. Spoiled rich SOB kid. I feel sorry for the family of the guy that he tried to kill but, other than that, who cares?

2. There is no "housing crisis". Taxes are a problem. Same for insurance but, hey, Florida is surrounded by water. Now real estate prices are falling back to "realistic" levels. What's the big deal?

3. THIS is a newsworthy story.

4. Same here, but what has happened? Haven't heard anything about it in weeks.

5. Are you SERIOUS? It wasn't a story the first time around.

6. See #2. One and the same if you ask me.

7. PLEASE!

8. You people have too much time and too little news.

9. If you're a sports fan, it's newsworthy so I'll give you this one, too.

10. Ditto #9.

I'll give to two out of ten for real news and a couple of maybes.

Here's one of my top ten:

Global warming and its accompanying rise in sea levels did NOT result in half of Florida becoming submerged. Said global warming and it's accompanying increase in sea water temperatures did NOT cause a rash of devastating hurricanes.

Freak, I think you are right, half of these are NOT news! It is sensationalism at best. Very sad.

Freak, you need to get a job as the news editor. I can't believe the stupid stories that they thought were BIG and newsworthy. Maybe if you printed a local rag like the Enquirer.

Jessica Sierra was a non-news story when she on Idol so why is she still making the news with her more than dysfunctional life and rotten attitude? This is a prime example of 15 short minutes of fame running amok in the miserable life of a young woman with such little self-respect and self-esteem and not enough class, culture or education to get out of her own way.
Leave her alone because she's already had more attention than she can handle and more would only provoke her little head to grow beyond all proportion.

Here's my list. I've combined the housing problem with its three causes. I've deleted the pop tart and spoiled kid stories, and I've focused on some "trend" type stories that often get overlooked in the listing of spot news stories.

1 Florida housing crisis caused by poor insurance regulation, and lack of controls on municipal taxation, and sub-prime mortgage crisis.

2. Record number of teachers caught by police. (if not a record, then it must be a near-record)

3. Florida stripped of all Democratic delegates to choose Presidential candidate, Republicans stripped of half, due to move of state primary to January.

4. Two USF students face with terrorism and explosive charges.

5. Florida to get 100 million from Seminole-owned casinos.

6. Charlie Crist fires hundreds of Jeb Bush appointees.

7. Crazed man kills two at BP station, then kills two more at insurance agency in Polk County.

8. Couey sentenced to die for Lundsford murder.

9. State Legislator charged with soliciting gay sex in a park washroom.

10. Largo City Manager Steve Stanton becomes Susan Stanton.

Folks, these are suggestions, which is why we asked for your opinion. Likewise, the ones we listed were only an opinion. Some of these stories were big because people constantly wanted to hear about them or read about them online, and not because we personally thought they were important.

Florida certainly produced its share of strange stories this year-- you all have already listed several that had completely slipped my mind.

Thanks for your comments... Happy New Year!

If insurance wasn't number 1 then why did I read about it for a year, get letters from my insurance company every other month, hear about Citizens every other week? There is still more talk about it than any other subject when you talk to people. Taxes and Insurance were top on all peoples minds ALL YEAR LONG!!!
