American to charge for 1st checked bag, Delta balks

Wednesday May 21, 11:33 am ET
By David Koenig, Associated Press Writer

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- American Airlines will start charging $15 for the first checked bag, cut domestic flights and lay off workers as it grapples with record-high fuel prices.

But rival Delta doesn't plan to match American's fee for the first checked bag, a spokeswoman said.

American, the nation's largest carrier, said Wednesday the fee for the first checked bag starts June 15 and that it would raise other fees for services ranging from reservation help to oversized bags. The other fees will mostly range from $5 to $50 per service, the airline said.

Last month American announced it would join other carriers in charging $25 for second bags checked for some passengers, but it wasn't immediately clear how Wednesday's announcement would affect that.

The planned fee on the first checked bag immediately ran into resistance. Delta Air Lines Inc. spokeswoman Betsy Talton said the Atlanta-based airline is considering all of its options in light of $130-a-barrel oil, but doesn't plan to match the $15 fee American announced.

American plans to cut domestic flight capacity by 11 percent to 12 percent in the fourth quarter. American had previously expected fourth-quarter capacity to fall 4.6 percent from the same period in 2007.

Parent AMR Corp. said reduced flying will lead to an undisclosed number of job cuts at both American and its American Eagle subsidiary.

AMR expects to retire 45 to 50 planes from its fleet, most of them gas-guzzling MD-80 aircraft. Those were the plane grounded for faulty wiring last month.

American said rising oil prices have increased its expected annual fuel costs by nearly $3 billion since the start of the year.

AMR shares tumbled $1.10, or 13.4 percent, to $7.10 after the announcement which came as its shareholders gathered for their annual meeting.

When I heard this today.. I was peeved!    I can understand charging for a 2nd checked bag.. but the 1st?

We already have tickets to fly American in late June, so we'll be forced to pay the fee this time around, but I don't think we'll be flying 'American' again.

Your thoughts?

That's crazy! Charging for the second bag...ok. But charging a fee for one bag?
This isn't about rising fuel costs. It's about profit.
If it were only about fuel costs then the fee would be on the second bag.

But what are the consumers supposed to do. You can fly another airling, but sooner or later this will be the norm.

I heard something to this effect but didn't think they would actually go ahead and do it......is the never ending story. I am afraid of planes so I will not worry about this......sorry Amy wish there was a quick fixed. Maybe if you get all the passengers to complain you think you may get away with it this time since you had already purchase the tickets. I would sure try.

American is the largest airline in the world. At some point most, if not all, the other airlines WILL follow suit. It's only a matter of time.

To get a look at what the future of U.S. air travel may look like - go to Air Canada's website and book a ticket. Air Canada was the first to go to a-la-carte pricing. You pay the fare but you decide whether you want frequent flier miles, checked baggage, meal service, etc...Depending on what you select your fare can go up drastically or actually decrease a bit. Check it out.

They won't if their flight reservations decline! I figure that will all be up to the travelers. Of course that doesn't count with the of frequent flight miles!

Blame it on oil. The prices have risen to the point where Airlines are fighting to stay in business and that wont change until either airline business' raise their fares or oil prices drop.

Oil prices will not drop from what they are now. So expect to be paying alot more for your air fair. What this means is that a lot of people are going to be choosing alternative means for travel. I think in the next 3 years you will see our passenger rail ways boom! I think that air travel will be for the rich and all of us average folk, will be stuck on buses and trains.

Either way see a big change in the near future. Most speculators are seeing $6.00 to $7.00 per gallon for the consumer let alone the airlines who will see a 30 to 40 percent rise in their prices as well.

Good times.

"I think that air travel will be for the rich and all of us average folk, will be stuck on buses and trains."

Whats funny is, this is how it actually started out. In the beginning, only the rich could travel by air. Looks like history is repeating itself.

Fortunately, I don't fly often, and when I do, I typically have one bag with me as a carry on. In all honesty, I prefer to travel by bus or train anyway, especially nowadays.

Oil prices are to blame-lets get our president George W Bush to handle it-after all he's an oil man...

with the airlines struggling to break even they are going to try every trick in the book to get more $$$ out of you.

the end result though, will be less and less passengers will Fly.

the cost of the ticket is now inflated by over 28 percent once fees and taxes are tacked on.

On a short trip, I tried to fly with just one compact carry on, but that held up the check in lines.
On a long trip, I checked one bag and just boarded with a book. That moved along the lines, but cost me when I had to buy clothes to hold me over until they found my bag.
Can win for losing.
I won't miss flying now that I can't afford it anyway.
Trains are unavailable to most destinations, but I would like to travel by rail again.
I think I must have been about four on my last trip from Portland, ME to Boston.
It brings to mind visions of the Oriental Express.
I think that I'd like it.
Save the OZONE go by rail!
Somebody build some rails, please.

Yet they won't allow me to travel naked. It's all so confusing.
