8 suspended for Rays-Red Sox brawl

NEW YORK (AP) -- Boston outfielder Coco Crisp, Tampa Bay pitcher James Shields and six other players were suspended Friday, a day after their wild brawl at Fenway Park.

Three Red Sox got suspended: Crisp for seven games, pitcher Jon Lester for five games and first baseman Sean Casey for three games. Five Rays were penalized by Major League Baseball disciplinarian Bob Watson: Shields for six games, DH-outfielder Jonny Gomes and pitcher Edwin Jackson for five games each, outfielder Carl Crawford for four games and second baseman Akinori Iwamura for three games.

All eight players also were fined undisclosed amounts. The Red Sox and Rays have often clashed in the past, and a fight between Crisp and Shields in Boston's 7-1 win Thursday night triggered the latest outburst.

"I want to be very clear: I defend everything our guys did," Rays manager Joe Maddon said before Friday night's game at Texas.

"I feel actually proud of the way we handled the situation that was presented."

Here's my beef. If this same brawl happened with a bunch of so-called regular guys in a parking lot in a bad neighborhood.. police would be everywhere and people would be rounded up and arrested on assault charges!

Why is it that professional athletes who assault eachother "on the job" are NOT criminally charged? Heck.. the incidents are even caught on tape! There's no disputing who did what. What's the deal?

The worst part is all the kids that look up to these overpaid idiots!! Now when they are out playing in their little league games and something doesn't go their way they will be too quick to throw a punch. The parents aren't much better. It is sad what we as a society allow ourselves to look up to.

It's sad, swansong, isn't it? It's a serious double standard.

And you're right Todd.. our kids deserve better role models. Much better.

Candy.. I sometimes wonder if the world has really gotten crazier or if it just seems that way because we are inundated with news all day long from our computers, phones, the radio, TV and newspapers. I hope it's the latter.

By the way.. I e-mailed you back.. let me know your thoughts.

Amy, I think it really HAS gotten crazier. I just don't remember so much going on when I was a kid. Granted that was more than a couple years ago..... ;)

Evening..Amy..yes thank you..and yes I am sorry to say..though the latter would be a bit much nicer to live with...I say our world is going bonkers and is not just here and there is everywhere. Are you kidding inundated with news.....never and without it imagine how many people would be in the dark. Sad very sad but yes I can only see matters getting worse and humanity continuing its destruction....sigh.....and praying. Prayers are always good.........

Our society is facing a food shortage. It has already hit the food banks,no food for the homeless and poor. Wait til the depression really kicks in and watch all of our spoiled generation fistfight over bread. Wait until the people who are fighting over tea cup rides at Disney find they have to fight to hold their place in line to get food. It will be interesting. I believe the people in the last depression had some dignity, not todays people.

These guys make M I L L I O N S because we put
them on pedestals so high, no stepladder can reach them, and therefore, they "must" be above
the law too. Some major league sports are considered by some, the highest form of today's
"idol worship." They keep people out of church, they make some children think these guys are heroes, and they're not. That kind of
behavior is inexcusable, and they should be punished, just like any other citizen.

Fix the justice system. Fix the justice system. Fix the justice system. You are right in saying everyone involved should be charged, period. Let the police do their job and let the judges do theirs. Stop the bleeding hearts and the frivilious law suits.
Now that I'm wound up for the day, I'll go see who I can take it out on.
p.s. I haven't been to a professional baseball game since they went on strike for more money many years ago. All those professional sports figures are paid far too much already.

Jumpy that was really good. Amy that's an excellent ending question to an excellent topic! Makes one wonder at times if it's just a publicity stunt. When fights break out, we wait to see what is coming next. Hmmm, that does make us kind of morbid doesn't it? I do however tend to wonder how much of a donation the team had to make to the police department for having to come break it up, and how much of a donation they had to make at the stadium. Sigh! It is all about money!

Pro sports are so far from being professional, We have not watched a pro sport in such a long time and the reason is obvious. My kids do not need to see the BLEEP that is displayed. We stick to our local teams and do our own thing. Thats what is great about TV, I can say NO and turn it off.

The system is the devil's lasso...
It works and generates income when fees can not be processed, encouraging debt and further incarceration...
If you have money you can be in and out in 15mins apparently...
If nobody presses charges its just a night in the drunk tank isn't it?

I think that a guy that makes 15 million a year has a right to be mad when a pitch comes too close. After all, they give the players facials and manicures during the game and the Asian massages after the game are to die for!
