First off... I am not a bigot... but what is with the the big to-do about Black Heritage and Hispanic Month celebrations?  My boss takes off time from work to go to meetings for the County's event... time he needs to be doing his job.

The Hispanic "celebration" is geared mostly towards the Cubans.  What about European Heritage Month?... after all, most of us are of European background... heck, the original settlers of this country were from Europe. .. blacks, white, spanish, etc.

Black and Hispanic Months get all sorts of events around the county... "picnics" in the County Center park, famous people, etc.

May is "Senior Citizen" month... what to they get (and the timing is terrible as May is my birthmonth and I am rapidly approaching the "senior" years)... a banner is tacked up high on the wall at the County Center... no parties, no picnic.

I recently received an email from a special "employee's committee"  that I am a member of regarding the addition of Asians as a special group... The committee is represented by 3 groups of people in each department... other than the BOCC... hispanics, black americans, and Others.  It was suggested that the reps not be "labeled"... this was "voted down"... as was the Asian rep suggestion.

something is VERY wrong here.... we are ALL Americans!  No hyphenation is necessary.

You are so RIGHT!!!! I work for the county also. They nominate each year Hispanic Citizen of the year...they have African-American Liason, Asian-American Affairs, Hispanic Affairs.....Do you feel left out? I do. They send you to the diversity classes..for what? They perpetrate division and bias with the very existance of all these programs.

Randy... cute dog! Ask you department's Rep when the meeting is... I think it's the 21st. I have to check my email... you can meet me downstairs, if you work downtown, at noon or so... just ask the group for Charli.

The Diversity training is ridiculous. I was in one of the first classes a few years ago. The instructor, after asking some questions of the class, and liking my answers, announced that I should be teaching the class!

The Asian-American representation on the committee was shot down... just Hispanic, Black, and Others... to represent the county employees.

You wouldn't happen to be motorcycly Randy?

we need white heritage month, WET Tv, White Enterprise, Ms White America, Ivory magazine, etc.. I wonder what would happen if a white person started this??? Hmm..i guess we would be called RACIST..but they all fail to realize how racist THEY actually are..they want to be all one and the same, but yet they continue to separate their color..goes to show how they are actually bigger bigots AND hypocrites than what they think we white folk are...I'm SO FREAKIN SICK OF IT..as I said in one of my posts, this BLEEP turns me into a racist to which i never was before. Sad part is, it's only getting worse...

This country was created for equality... that really got lost along the way! My first experience was in high school... well, the one I remember. I had moved from OH to FL in 1962. Everyone got off for the xmas and easter holidays... but the Jews got extra days for their holidays. A friend and I took off on Ash Wednesday and the next day were called into the principle's office. The holiday was not considered a "legal" holiday. When we pointed out about the Jewish holidays not really being "school sanctioned" holidays, the man stared at us. We did not get punished. (Remember that we recently had the same issues in Hillsborough county... )

We government workers get MLK Day off... what happened to Washington's and Lincoln's b-days... as a child we all got those days off from school... They were changed into "President's Day"... and not a holiday!

Something is so very wrong year. I really hope that Obama does not get elected. A woman should be president first. Not being bigotted here... it's only fair. But that is a whole different subect!

Oh heck! I'd better clarify my last statement before someone gets mad.

We woman have been fighting for equality since day one! If Obama is elected, he is still a man... doesn't matter the color of his skin. I'd say the same thing if a Jew was elected... and, by the way... I am Jewish.

I say we need to add "Woman Heritage" to the county's celebrations... oh, I forgot... we have Mother's Day. (which is occasionally the same day as my birthday...)

I am so sick of black history, black this, blah blah blah...
Maybe if they'd stop crying about discrimination all the time they might see the only one's that plays the race card is black...
Hence OBAMA'S comment.
As far as Obama for president. Think twice people. He can't look an interviewer in the eyes while answering questions. What does that tell you about him? Someone's lying...and it's not the white man's fault either.

rev... I looked at comments by the runners on certains issues in the weekend's Trib... Obama responded as the others did... but added a few extra words... I have to say that several people I know... blacks (I hate using that term!)... are going for Hilary... they don't trust Obama "as far as they can throw him"!

Update on the county's BH day... want some free food? Go to the downtown park on Kennedy on the 8th... of course it means a lot of county workers will be away from their job in order to participate in the celebration... for several hours... but the free food is great.

I am waiting for May... Senior Citizen Appreciation Month... all we get is a banner in the lobby of the building!

hey, do ya think it would be too much to ask for woman's history day?? I mean they have mother's day, grandmas day, but what about all us in betweens?? i bet if i was a black woman i could get Black Woman's history day. I think i'll start causing a stink about everything, i have nothing to do right now..LOL!!

myboblue.... I'll back you up. Let's see... "Woman's Appreciation Day", "Men's AD", "Little Boys AD", "Little Girls A D", "Asian AD" (which would then be broken down further for Chinese, Japanese, etc.), "European A D" (also broken down into all the nations of Europe), the list could go on and on and on... No work would get done as people would be at planning meetings all the time!

BTW... the celebration on Friday did not look to be well attended. Many of my co-workers, who should have gone, refused to go... "We are all Americans", my skin being black does not mean I should have to participate in the celebration. I am an american first." They had plenty of food left, even giving a lot of it out the homeless people that hang out downtown. It was a nice lunch break... free of odor and crazy talk as the homeless were all at the park!

I also do a lot of educational graphics design about the proper disposal of household chemical & electronics, litter, etc. My hobbies are very diverse... golf and reading, with sci-fi, forensic mysteries, and history being my favorites. My other passion is photography, mostly nature. Ever since experiencing my first hurricane in Florida, Cleo in 1964 when I was 15, when the eye went over my house, I have been fascinated with weather. I have a 99% accuracy... including predicting Charley's turn away from Tampa the night before he hit down south.
